Hello, i got this issue that i just can't seem to find the answer to... i found an OG Xbox right in the thrash can, it was only the console itselt with no Controllers, RCA or Power cords. I decided to take a look and it actually looked fine, so i took it home. Once inside, i used a power cord from a very old 90's CD Player and noticed it fit perfectly on the Xbox. It turned on and i saw the front light flash orange/green. But i also noticed a peculiar smell coming out from the Fan... it smelled like roaches... yeah... took like 3 hours killing and cleaning what i could from the Xbox. I probably killed like 30-40 roaches. I also noticed there was a couple tiny tweezers attached on right on the sides of what it seemed a fuse on the PSU. taking a closer look i knew this was some sort of "bridge". It seems that whoever owned it decided to just get rid of it because of the roach infestation inside, but other than that the system works flawlessly and it appears to be Flashed, because it had a burned disc inside the Drive and a bunch of Retro Emulators installed. I want to remove those tiny tweezers and replace the Fuse, but i can't seem to find any info. You got any idea of what Voltage and Amps for this fuse?

Your videos are very helpful. I have what I believe to be a 1.3 revision that died on me one day. It ended up being the solder joints on the power supply. I posted about it on Reddit and one of the nice guys on there pointed out to me that not only was the solder joint bad, but there were scorch marks around it. I heard crackling and sizzling when trying to troubleshoot it as well. A close friend of mine was able to resolder the joints and fixed the issue.

Great set of videos! Watched them all. They have a lecture quality to them that isn't boring. I knew I had a Version 1.0 Xbox (which I removed the fan/heatsink and replaced it with a later revision heatsink (broken Xbox). 1:1 fit. I also pieced out the crappy Thompson drive I had which would have trouble reading game discs reliably, with a Philips and it works perfect every time. Now I have 2 original Xboxes that have Philips drives that work great. Going to soft-mod one with a larger hard drive.

The clock capacitor CAN be replaced. In fact the new capacitor works 10 times better than the original. Look for capacitors with the following: 2.5 volt 10 Farad (NOT microfarad) Electrolytic Super Capacitor. Mouser Part # 504-HB1030-2R5106-R... It may not fit like the original, you only need to insert it and have the cap laying horizontally. You need to lay it that way, otherwise it will interfere with the DVD-ROM drive... When removing the original cap, make sure you clean the area very well, as the electrolyte that spills out is fairly corrosive. You MUST look at the tracks to see if any have been eaten away. Failing to do this can eventually lead to the X-Box playing up... In ALL the X-Box originals I've repaired having to replace that cap, I replaced it with a 50 Farad, to which all the settings were kept for more than a week with the X-Box unplugged from the mains... Trace corrosion repair to which I did many years ago as Darkmatter, can be seen here: www.theisozone.com/tutorials/xbox/hardware-and-modding/trace-corrosion-repair/ ...
@retro_vg_repairs33396 жыл бұрын
wow thanks for contributing. Your trace corrosion repair was very thorough and helped me a great deal. What you said about the clock cap may be correct, but I still never find it to be that much of an issue to run the machine without the clock cap at all. A modded Xbox wont even ask for the time, nor is it relevant for any software such as games or apps.

That's like a Hospital putting a Band aid on a severed limb and sending you home!!! You're wrong about the maximum storage capacity. The Xbox can read up to 2.3 terabytes. And IDE hard drives go up to 750 gigs. You have to keep in mind the dates on the hard drive as well if you have an original version 1.0 Xbox with a hard drive from 2001 and you replace it with a hard drive IDE from 2008 you just made the Xbox 7 years newer than its original age. I've used IDE all the time never going lower than 250. They're very easy to find locally and cheap as well. The trick is when you're using chimp you have to listen to the hard drive. If you hear any clicking or weird noises coming from it throw it in the garbage. Hook up your original hard drive back into your Xbox and rerun chimp again. Also I've heard of a few people using the original IDE cable with a 2 terabyte. Sometimes it works when it does it is a little slower. You can use an 80 wire IDE even with an IDE hard drive it will make for a lot faster load times.
@retro_vg_repairs33397 жыл бұрын
Retro Pro Frank while that's technically true, there aren't 2.3 TB drives you can buy. I don't suggest anyone buys a HDD if they can't utilize all of it's space. You also need to take extra steps to make sure the Xbox writes the data correctly, or else you run the risk of overwriting vital data. Of course, that's completely within your own discretion. I just don't recommend it. Regarding your comments on IDE drives, I just wanted to give a reasonable pros/cons list so people can decide for themselves what kind of drive to get. Thanks for watching!

Hi there! very interesting videos, indeed. I have one xbox 1.6 that seems to need a particular kind of repair. As I said, it's a 1.6, and it had very distorted color and resolution, bad loud scratchy sound, and auto power on w/dvd open. I took it to the service and told the guy to do a total recap (there were 2 blown capacitors -not the clock one-), he did... and both sound and video are great (video does get some sporadic odd coloring/ brightness issues after 2 hours of usage, though). Unfortunately, the auto power wasn't solved AND, this is the strangest thing: I can turn on the Xbox by pluging it and play... just ONCE per day. Wow 1.6s shouldnt have that issue. I would try the reheating thing. You get the flashing red/green when there is a short, or damage to some component. The Xbox is detecting some kind of huge failure. Could just be component failure, like one of the chips. Capacitors failing would probably result in a no power situation. Or random shutoff during gameplay. CHIMP wont display video on the 1.6v xbox and its a super pain in the ass usually I just give up trying to recover or upgrade the hdd of a softmod and just install a modchip and make a clean install with a "new" hdd
@retro_vg_repairs33396 жыл бұрын
MobCat make sure you're using composite cables
@MobCat_6 жыл бұрын
Yeah it dosent have anything to do with that, it has to do with the excalibur video encoder braking some 480p stuff also braking support for some unix things...
@retro_vg_repairs33396 жыл бұрын
MobCat I've never had that issue. I say to use composite because the Xbox will run in 480i, which xcalibur can handle just fine. 480p wouldn't be part of it at all.

I am looking at replacing the 5 capacitors by the CPU and PSU. The generic 6.3v 1500uf caps all are bulging and 4 are leaking, but the console somehow still turns on and functions normally.
@blablaba18714 жыл бұрын
You can use an Arduino or Raspberry Pi and a couple of wires to extract the EEPROM. An Arduino only costs like $2-3. github.com/grimdoomer/PiPROM github.com/Ryzee119/ArduinoProm/blob/master/README.md

When it comes to the clock capacitor I think it has to do with more of where it was manufactured, I own both a 1.0 and 1.2 Xbox motherboard that comes with the exact same capacitor used in a 1.6. I also own a 1.0 that was manufactured in Mexico that has this bad capacitor in it, it's a black capacitor with no obvious brand names on it.

I have a dead 1.6 Xbox, right before it died I was playing Halo 2 but the thing just shuts off by itself off and wouldn't turn back on. I took it apart, pressed the power button a few times, the fan would spin for 1 second, press it a few more times, fan spins again for 1 second. Then I replaced the 5 bulging caps shown in this video but the Xbox still won't turn on when I press power or eject. Now fan won't spin at all. Checked for trace corrosion on the board but it's clean. Plug in a working power supply from another 1.6 Xbox, still won't turn on. Please help, I really wana fix this Xbox. EDIT: I forgot to mention the 3300uF capacitor I got from Sayal Electronics is 16V with an unknown brand. Do you think they are bad too? secure.sayal.com/STORE2/View_SHOP.php?SKU=232789

If you're softmodded and remove the clock cap, does the new dashboard (I forget it's name) use Network Time Protocol (NTP), to automatically set the time and date?
@retro_vg_repairs33394 жыл бұрын
Believe so, just need Ethernet

a modchip is useful for 1.6 xbox, for earlier versions softmod + tssop is best with tssop you can also safely unlock the hdd and that's great for hdds that can not be locked. I still dream for the day I can increase the ram memory and even an upgrade for the cpu but I suck at soldering. and finding a compatible computer for the xbox is harder nowdays. It's crazy how after the upgrade some games run too fast that makes them unplayable.
@aurelios695 жыл бұрын
The cpu upgrade as already been done years ago. And forget about it, it will ruin the games, only helps with emulation and multimedia

Good video, do you know what the optimum potentiometer readings are for a Sega Dreamcast laser? This info would really be helpful.
@retro_vg_repairs33397 жыл бұрын
Blitzkrieg I do not, sorry
@blitzkrieg11747 жыл бұрын
I thought I would ask. I actually fixed 2 of my Sega Dreamcast's by tweaking the potentiometer on the back of the laser not to long ago, they were dormant for about 15 years boxed up. Now they work fine. I would have to believe that my original Xbox has some trace corrosion as you have showed us in some of your videos. My old Xbox has the symptoms of when I plug it in at the wall, it'll power up but I cannot power the system down by pushing the power button. However the disc drive works fine. Thanks.
@retro_vg_repairs33397 жыл бұрын
Blitzkrieg wow well done. Yeah that definitely sounds like trace corrosion on the bottom side of the board. That's always a fun fix! There a couple of good tutorials about that on KZbin, definitely worth watching

I've seen a few videos on the internet showing how to fix the trace corrosion, I'll give it a try once I get the parts I need.

I tried to fix my Xbox's trace corrosion problem and destroyed my Xbox in the process. I suppose I should have purchased some flux, it was difficult to get the solder to stick to the 30awg kynar wire. Now I need a version 1.0 Xbox motherboard. Are the disc drives interchangeable between the different versions of Xbox's, could I take my disc drive out of my version 1.0 Xbox and put it in another version?

Any advise on replacing the time capacitor with a rechargeable battery or sth?
@retro_vg_repairs33396 жыл бұрын
Oliver S. Never seen anyone try that. Honestly it's not worth the trouble. It wouldn't hold the time very long anyway when it's unplugged and there isn't any game that cares about the current clock.

Does anyone know the solution with getting the hexen disc utility working when the xbox disc drive is dead? I heard you can ftp the files to the hard drive but I don't know if it works and it looks a little bit complicated. The xbox I'm working on is 1.0 tsop flashed so will it be simple? I wish to just replace the hard drive with a bigger one and not use something like chimp or a old PC.
@retro_vg_repairs33396 жыл бұрын
Matrix Millennium no real way to so that, sorry dude. To use the HDD version of hexen, you need an actual dashboard to access it. Ftp won't work since you also need a dash already. Either you borrow a working DVD drive, use chimp, or set up the new drive with the new usb version of hdmaker. Old PC not necessary anymore
@OSXMatrixMoDs6 жыл бұрын
@@retro_vg_repairs3339 I have access to a moded dashboard / bios already just a dead DVD drive to use the disc version of hexen to format the new drive. Do I still have to use chimp or get a working DVD drive to just copy things over and change the bios over to unleash X?
@retro_vg_repairs33396 жыл бұрын
Matrix Millennium yeah well here's the issue: the new hard drive is empty and unformatted. You need to get the dashboard files onto the new one using the methods I listed above. You either use hexen, chimp, or use xboxhdmaker.
@OSXMatrixMoDs6 жыл бұрын
@@retro_vg_repairs3339 well that kind of sucks but I'll look into it thanks for the help..
@retro_vg_repairs33396 жыл бұрын
Matrix Millennium that's why when modding I always have a spare Xbox with a working DVD. Once I upgrade the HDD and tsop, I put the old dead DVD drive back in. You could probably luck out a grab an Xbox from a local thrift or garage sale. Then swap out the disc drive
