Correction: there is a USB version of xboxhdm available so you don't have to have a super old PC tower anymore. Do some research if this sounds like a good option for you.

Hello, i got this issue that i just can't seem to find the answer to... i found an OG Xbox right in the thrash can, it was only the console itselt with no Controllers, RCA or Power cords. I decided to take a look and it actually looked fine, so i took it home. Once inside, i used a power cord from a very old 90's CD Player and noticed it fit perfectly on the Xbox. It turned on and i saw the front light flash orange/green. But i also noticed a peculiar smell coming out from the Fan... it smelled like roaches... yeah... took like 3 hours killing and cleaning what i could from the Xbox. I probably killed like 30-40 roaches. I also noticed there was a couple tiny tweezers attached on right on the sides of what it seemed a fuse on the PSU. taking a closer look i knew this was some sort of "bridge". It seems that whoever owned it decided to just get rid of it because of the roach infestation inside, but other than that the system works flawlessly and it appears to be Flashed, because it had a burned disc inside the Drive and a bunch of Retro Emulators installed. I want to remove those tiny tweezers and replace the Fuse, but i can't seem to find any info. You got any idea of what Voltage and Amps for this fuse?

Your videos are very helpful. I have what I believe to be a 1.3 revision that died on me one day. It ended up being the solder joints on the power supply. I posted about it on Reddit and one of the nice guys on there pointed out to me that not only was the solder joint bad, but there were scorch marks around it. I heard crackling and sizzling when trying to troubleshoot it as well. A close friend of mine was able to resolder the joints and fixed the issue.

Great set of videos! Watched them all. They have a lecture quality to them that isn't boring. I knew I had a Version 1.0 Xbox (which I removed the fan/heatsink and replaced it with a later revision heatsink (broken Xbox). 1:1 fit. I also pieced out the crappy Thompson drive I had which would have trouble reading game discs reliably, with a Philips and it works perfect every time. Now I have 2 original Xboxes that have Philips drives that work great. Going to soft-mod one with a larger hard drive.

6:25 'Replacement laser costs the same as a replacement drive' Apparently no longer true, just bought a laser for my Philips drive for $30, the only drives I'm seeing for sale now are $90 for tested working, $50 for a lot of known bad drives, or $50 for 'untested' Thompson drives. I'm at 1 good Samsung, 1 good Philips, and 1 dead Philips.

The clock capacitor CAN be replaced. In fact the new capacitor works 10 times better than the original. Look for capacitors with the following: 2.5 volt 10 Farad (NOT microfarad) Electrolytic Super Capacitor. Mouser Part # 504-HB1030-2R5106-R... It may not fit like the original, you only need to insert it and have the cap laying horizontally. You need to lay it that way, otherwise it will interfere with the DVD-ROM drive... When removing the original cap, make sure you clean the area very well, as the electrolyte that spills out is fairly corrosive. You MUST look at the tracks to see if any have been eaten away. Failing to do this can eventually lead to the X-Box playing up... In ALL the X-Box originals I've repaired having to replace that cap, I replaced it with a 50 Farad, to which all the settings were kept for more than a week with the X-Box unplugged from the mains... Trace corrosion repair to which I did many years ago as Darkmatter, can be seen here: www.theisozone.com/tutorials/xbox/hardware-and-modding/trace-corrosion-repair/ ...

wow thanks for contributing. Your trace corrosion repair was very thorough and helped me a great deal. What you said about the clock cap may be correct, but I still never find it to be that much of an issue to run the machine without the clock cap at all. A modded Xbox wont even ask for the time, nor is it relevant for any software such as games or apps.

5:20 i did the pot tweak on my xbox 360 probably like 5 years ago now due to the dirty disc error, its a 2009 year Jasper model 360 and the disc drive is a philips / lite-on DG 16D2S. I dont remember the resistance values that i set on the potentiometer, but i still have this console today and use it all the time (its RGH modded) and the drive is still doing great, even reads some lightly scratched discs that other xbox drives struggle with. makes me curious what resistance i set, kinda want to take it apart and check.

I have an old PC (bought it in 2005) and I had luck using Xbox HDM, it's an awesome tool! I extracted the EEPROM.BIN using a special cable that I built (tutorial on youtube, the same one you mentioned at 20:10, it's awesome), got the eeprom's content and using that I burnt a linux live CD on a CD-RW. I revived 3 or 4, maybe 5 Xboxes so far with this method, initializing a new HDD for them. If you have the hardware it's worth going this route.

You can also put the Thompson DVD drive belt in boiling water which will cause it to shrink back to it's original size/shape. HTH So Microsoft replaced the power supply plug & wire for one with a built in circuit breaker because the connector on the console was faulty! That's like a Hospital putting a Band aid on a severed limb and sending you home!!! I kept the original power plug & lead because I tested it and could find no faults with it or with my wife's one either, we did use the replacement's though. You're wrong about the maximum storage capacity. The Xbox can read up to 2.3 terabytes. And IDE hard drives go up to 750 gigs. You have to keep in mind the dates on the hard drive as well if you have an original version 1.0 Xbox with a hard drive from 2001 and you replace it with a hard drive IDE from 2008 you just made the Xbox 7 years newer than its original age. I've used IDE all the time never going lower than 250. They're very easy to find locally and cheap as well. The trick is when you're using chimp you have to listen to the hard drive. If you hear any clicking or weird noises coming from it throw it in the garbage. Hook up your original hard drive back into your Xbox and rerun chimp again. Also I've heard of a few people using the original IDE cable with a 2 terabyte. Sometimes it works when it does it is a little slower. You can use an 80 wire IDE even with an IDE hard drive it will make for a lot faster load times.
@retro_vg_repairs3339
@retro_vg_repairs3339 7 жыл бұрын
Retro Pro Frank while that's technically true, there aren't 2.3 TB drives you can buy. I don't suggest anyone buys a HDD if they can't utilize all of it's space. You also need to take extra steps to make sure the Xbox writes the data correctly, or else you run the risk of overwriting vital data. Of course, that's completely within your own discretion. I just don't recommend it. Regarding your comments on IDE drives, I just wanted to give a reasonable pros/cons list so people can decide for themselves what kind of drive to get. Thanks for watching!

AWESOME series of videos mate, KUDOS! Very comprehensive. I'm now subscribed to your channel. Perhaps you can help me, my original Xbox 1- has no dashboard 2- once the Xbox is turned on, it goes through that visual boot-up routine [mostly green coloured shapes] then, instead of finishing on the green Xbox logo that you would expect, mine shows the Xbox logo, in BLUE! [?]. 3- this one, is the one TRUE problem I have with my Xbox, it plays all my games [over a dozen] without any issues whatsoever, BUT there is ONE game, which I have had to purchase FOUR times now [three times used and the fourth one brand new/still sealed] which my Xbox just won't play - that game is Aeon Flux. I'm a HUGE fan of the Aeon Flux animated series and I'm DYING to play this game...I just can't figure this thing out. Why won't it play this one game [a game I would give up all my other games, just to play it]? I've cleaned the discs and the laser lens, I've asked all kinds of people around me and online - nobody can explain this. I got this Xbox for free, from a friend's friend, that's all I know. ANY clue, hint, tip, help, from you would be GREATLY appreciated - I fear you are my last hope, to EVER play this game. Sorry for this long comment. Thank you kindly

Also, as far as I remember the leaking acid from a ClockCap caused some serious problems but after cleaning the stuff up the system started. Probably something was sorted or something.

Hi there! very interesting videos, indeed. I have one xbox 1.6 that seems to need a particular kind of repair. As I said, it's a 1.6, and it had very distorted color and resolution, bad loud scratchy sound, and auto power on w/dvd open. I took it to the service and told the guy to do a total recap (there were 2 blown capacitors -not the clock one-), he did... and both sound and video are great (video does get some sporadic odd coloring/ brightness issues after 2 hours of usage, though). Unfortunately, the auto power wasn't solved AND, this is the strangest thing: I can turn on the Xbox by pluging it and play... just ONCE per day. Then, it won't boot up, at all, no matter how much I try. Any suggestions?

@@retro_vg_repairs3339 The trace corrosion is my main suspect... but I'm worried about the odd coloring/saturation/brightness briefly "storming" on screen after 2 hours of gaming or so. The previous shitty technician (who obviously assured everything worked perfectly) said that I will have lots of overheating problems and most probably, that I'd need to do some reballing; but I do remember having put arctic MX4, at least on the micro (not on the graphic card). XBMC says it's 60ºc on the micro and 45º on the graphic chip... Should I worry? I read somewhere that 1.6 kind of gives wrong readings.

ah that sucks. To tell you the truth, I did manage to fix that once by cleaning it really thoroughly. The clock cap leaked quite a bit and the machine wouldnt boot. I cleaned it really hard for like an hour and eventually it was back to normal. Good luck!

Retro_VG_Repairs It is worth a try. The version is a 1.6. I changed the thermalpast and removed the dust it had inside, no luck. It didn't look like any of the caps had leaked. I was thinking about trying the heatgun trick. Like some use on the xbox 360 (rrod). Have you tryed that on a O.G. xbox motherboard?
@YellowElevator815
@YellowElevator815 6 жыл бұрын
Wow 1.6s shouldnt have that issue. I would try the reheating thing. You get the flashing red/green when there is a short, or damage to some component. The Xbox is detecting some kind of huge failure. If absolutely nothing looks amiss, it would be incredibly hard to figure out what exactly stopped working.

The cleaning didn't help, frist cleaned with elektronics cleaner. Did nothing. Then cleaned like tech yes city does with pc parts. No change. Tryed the oven heating trick. Not helping. I think some of the caps has gone bad.

Could just be component failure, like one of the chips. Capacitors failing would probably result in a no power situation. Or random shutoff during gameplay. FRAG is telling you that the hardware cannot boot up at all. I would seriously just recommend finding another cheap Xbox. Keep checking your thrift stores for good deals.

When it comes to the clock capacitor I think it has to do with more of where it was manufactured, I own both a 1.0 and 1.2 Xbox motherboard that comes with the exact same capacitor used in a 1.6. I also own a 1.0 that was manufactured in Mexico that has this bad capacitor in it, it's a black capacitor with no obvious brand names on it.

I have a dead 1.6 Xbox, right before it died I was playing Halo 2 but the thing just shuts off by itself off and wouldn't turn back on. I took it apart, pressed the power button a few times, the fan would spin for 1 second, press it a few more times, fan spins again for 1 second. Then I replaced the 5 bulging caps shown in this video but the Xbox still won't turn on when I press power or eject. Now fan won't spin at all. Checked for trace corrosion on the board but it's clean. Plug in a working power supply from another 1.6 Xbox, still won't turn on. Please help, I really wana fix this Xbox. I still dream for the day I can increase the ram memory and even an upgrade for the cpu but I suck at soldering. and finding a compatible computer for the xbox is harder nowdays. It's crazy how after the upgrade some games run too fast that makes them unplayable.

Now they work fine. I would have to believe that my original Xbox has some trace corrosion as you have showed us in some of your videos. My old Xbox has the symptoms of when I plug it in at the wall, it'll power up but I cannot power the system down by pushing the power button. However the disc drive works fine. Thanks.

I suppose I should have purchased some flux, it was difficult to get the solder to stick to the 30awg kynar wire. Now I need a version 1.0 Xbox motherboard. Are the disc drives interchangeable between the different versions of Xbox's, could I take my disc drive out of my version 1.0 Xbox and put it in another version?

Matrix Millennium no real way to so that, sorry dude. To use the HDD version of hexen, you need an actual dashboard to access it. Ftp won't work since you also need a dash already.
