Robin Williams is my favorite comedian, but Jim Carrey is 3rd in that list. I have heard many great things about Eternal Sunshine but just haven't seen it. Big fan of Pulp Fiction and I appreciate your honest quick review. Loved the Cat Break, very cute. This Everything I Watched video is my election distraction in of itself

Part of the thing with the serious Jim Carrey roles were that they were more centered in drama and NO one realized he could act in a serious role. Its entirely possible that some of the hype came because he was strong enough to carry a mediocre movie. It was the same when you got Steve Carrell in Little Miss Sunshine. Everyone's mind was blown. I do enjoy Eternal Sunshine though. I know its heartbreaking, but the romantic part of me also interpreted that movie as...you can know that a love wont last, but if the time spent is good enough, its worth the heartbreak in the end. The whole notion of I would rather love you and lose you than never spend a moment loving you at all is such a beautiful one. Home for the Holidays and Son in Law are my two Thanksgiving movies. HFTH has Holly Hunter and a young Robert Downey Jr. Great little family drama. I've never seen Dracula either soooo...there's that, haha.

Yoooo I wanna check that German film from the 1920s !! Based on those clips you showed, the movie looks GORGEOUS! I LOVED Nosferatu from 1922 so I wonder if this will have a similar vibe Also, it’s weird not hearing you talking about Riverdale lol ;(

What a great video! You brought up so many things that sparked so many thoughts. But, first, congratulations on the movie! I can identify with finally seeing a critically-revered movies after years of hype. For me, it was Citizen Kane. I really liked it the first time I saw it, but it took two more viewings to finally set expectations aside and discover I did actually love it. I hadn't thought about "one crazy night" as a genre, but I guess it's true. Come to think of it, they go back at least as far as It Happened One Night in 1934, with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. That movie is one of only three to ever win all five of the top Oscars. I saw "Nick & Norah" years ago. It's a funny choice for a title because it's clearly riffing on the Thin Man movies from the 1930s and 40s, in which William Powell and Myrna Loy booze and flirt their way through six murder mysteries. I hope you like Bram Stoker's Dracula more on a future watching. For me, it's a Halloween staple because I lean towards the movies with moody (even over the top) atmosphere like this movie, Sleepy Hollow, The Fog, Trick 'r Treat, etc. I love that it's one of the few adaptations to tell the whole story (although, it also adds a backstory that's not in the book). I also love that Coppola insisted on effects that could all be accomplished on-set and in-camera. The kind of FX that would have been possible in 1931. When the FX team he hired said it wasn't possible, he fired them and replaced them with his son, who figured it out.

I always enjoy these monthly review of what you watched. I always find new stuff it put on a watch list. Pulp Fiction. I always feel that his director style in some of his movies like Kill Bill and this film is a collection of vignettes put together on a string. Yes, holiday time we don’t watch as much horror and we keep up with what’s in the theater that may show up in the Oscars. Bram Stoker's Dracula, yes not the greatest but I made sure you had a good copy of it in reviewing Vampire movies with Nosferatu coming out. But I know you have a good copy of the original Dracula to watch, now or soon.

I always look forward to your monthly recaps! I still need to watch The Substance and I want to try and see if my friend might want to watch it cause he doesn't really do horror. I also really want to watch Anora, especially after seeing Mikey Madison in interviews talk about the process she went through to get into her character and explaining how different Anora is to who she is in real life, makes me want to see it more. I'm not really into shows or movies that are centered around or in schools but I do love Heathers as well. I think I've rewatched it like 3 times already and I really want to watch it again. But so many interesting movies. Thanks for another awesome, chaotic and hilarious recap Kylie!

examples of live-action gateway horror that come to my mind are the Goosebumps movies and series, with the OG series being more for younger kids and the 2023 targeting the teen audience. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina feels like gateway horror for the teens. It's Riverdale's creepier cousin, with more goore, cannibalizm, and monsters. some of the Disney Channel originals like Don't Look Under The Bed, The Scream Team, and Halloween Town II (which was directed by the same Mary Lambert who directed the Pet Semetary movies) I think qualify as gateway horror. Both theatrical Disney releases of The Haunted Mansion, one of which I have an unpopular opinion about. Actually found the remake with LaKeith Stanfield very entertaining and pleasantly colorful, not nearly as bad as people say. I think a lot of reviewers were too harsh on it due to the remake burnout. Similarly, Netflix's The Curse Of Bridge Hollow and Nightbooks come across as gateway horror. Particularly the latter bc the protagonist is a horror fan, thus there are copious references to other horror movies, especially The Lost Boys. Maybe Netflix's We Have A Ghost counts too? Would also consider last year's Sting gateway horror. The protag is like 13/14 and the minimal gore is very fantastical in the nature of its portrayal. Plus it's not an outright *bad* movie, but neither deep enough or scary enough to satisfy a more mature audience. Shows like Are You Afraid Of The Dark and The Haunting Hour feel like gateway horror anthology. The Little Vampire from 2000. Although it would later receive an animated adaptation too. When Good Ghouls Go Bad with Christopher Lloyd, a 2001 family movie where a cursed town refuses to celebrate Halloween. Has some family friendly scares. The Shadow Zone movies, My Teacher Ate My Homework with Shelly Duval and The Undead Express. Little Monsters and The Monster Squad from the 80s. I feel like Crazy Fun Park might count? It's definitely for a teenage audience (although even as an adult I cried at multiple points) but it's not horror per se, even if it's about ghosts and has some pretty creepy moments. Albeit it could still be considered gateway in the sense that it gets the normie teens interested enough in the haunting elements to pursue other ghost media that leans harder into the scares.

Cool recap! I'm glad you enjoyed some of the movies. Yeah, Pulp Fuction is also one of my favorites as well, but the only issue I have with it is his use of the n word in it when it's not necessary also with reservoir dogs. But Django is the only exception because you know that movie was about slavery. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is one of my favorites. I saw it twice in theaters when it came out. You're also thinking about Superbad the whole one crazy night movie thing. It's OK you didn't get Akira at first. I figured you'd watch it again and appreciate in a few years. Elf is something I watched almost once a year on Christmas. That and Edward Scissorhands Your cat looks exactly like my cat. I thought that was my cat lol. I never watched Ash Vs Evil Dead series myself but want to. My mom really loved Conclave matter of fact she saw it twice. Vampires suck is nostalgic blast from the past for me. Looking back on it's stupid and some parts are not funny but I appreciate it. Tim Burton was inspired by the cabinet of dr.caligari. You can see the german expression influences in his films. It's one of my favorite movies of that era next to Nosferatu. I recommend you check out Panic Room that's a good movie with Jodie Foster And Kristen stewart. Messengers was supposed to be bad but I know you love those types of movies and gives you something to talk about and make fun. It's all for the algorithm. Also sorry for the long comment and rant lol. You should do a final destination ranking or deep dive someday

Awesome recap! So glad you’re finally starting Ash vs Evil dead! It’s gotta mess up your franchise ranking for sure lol but I’m also glad you finally checked out some cinematic classics! Also so cool that you’re working with Asylum!! Yeah they’re a low budget for sure but that’s what I love! Can’t wait to see your performance! Heathers definitely walked so mean girls could run but a lot of that movie wouldn’t fly today lol but its also been made into a musical! I bet you ran with the cool kids too but don’t worry, you’re a total Veronica lol ;) My favorite Winona film is Reality Bites (1994) It’s a gen-X film and she plays a young filmmaker. Ethan Hawke is in it too! I love vampires suck! Even though it’s been years since I last saw it, I remember thinking it’s better than a lot of the other spoof movies of the time. I appreciate that you, as a twilight fan, appreciate the jabbing hahah Eternal sunshine is great dramatic Jim Carrey, but I also recommend you check his drama/comedy Bruce almighty, he’s funny in it but not too over the top. Also check out on KZbin some of the behind the scenes with him and Kate Winslet on Eternal sunshine; he gets a little too into the whole drama thing but I could tell he was working it out. This movie definitely helped me to work things out. This one, Chasing Amy (1997), and Annie Hall (1977), i recommend those too! Cool thing about the director of eternal sunshine is that he started out directing music videos, including some famous ones with the white stripes! But this is definitely more of a happier break up movie than something like Closer (2004), that one is more mean and heavy but just like breakups. It’s got a stacked cast! School of rock was a staple of my childhood and is the best Jack black movie ever lol probably cuz it was written for him! I mean I’m not kidding when I say I’m like Dewey and I could teach that class myself! But my favorite scene is when they’re in the bar singing to Stevie nicks! Love the drunk principal! Hahah I’m just glad you finally checked out pulp fiction! I have a copy of the screenplay and I love reading it along with the movie! I think his nonlinear approach to the storytelling is what made Tarantinos writing stand out. It won an Oscar! Crazy considering the kitchen scene heheh I mean his foot thing is honestly his least controversial thing compared to his n-word pass for his white characters. But I can totally see you and Scott cosplaying as Vincent and Mia in the future! He may be a little too tall but you’re perfect! It’s cool cuz the fox force five story Mia tells would be repurposed for Kill Bill later! You should definitely check that one out! Sorry for the long comment and throwing out all those recommendations but I was inspired to add to your watchlist! Also I grew up going to a Catholic Church but I’m not religious lol except for this cult hahah Thank you again for the recap my dark mistress!!

Richard Linklater's Slacker is another single day in life of, easy going kind of film. I've always dug The Science of Sleep more than Eternal Sunshine. Bernie is a decent Linklater movie, wouldn't buy but it's watchable. one of the few Jack Black movies where he actually stops being Jack Black to play a character. in the vein of Dr. Caligari try out The Phantom Carriage & The Adventures of Prince Achmed.

Great recap! Glad you liked Pulp Fiction, it was more mind blowing and revolutionary at the time, but it still holds up imo.. yeah the ending is a bit anticlimactic, but I chalk that up to the non-linear storytelling, it has great replay value.. now I'll do my annoying obligatory mention about how you'll love Kill Bill lol.. Yes Heathers is so good! Definitely the Clueless, Jawbreaker, and Mean Girls blueprint! I've always thought Truman Show was "overrated", watched it recently and the concept is timeless but it felt dated to me.. still haven't seen Eternal Sunshine but it's been on my radar for a minute.. Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber and Liar Liar is Jim Carrey at his best imho.. Yes Elf is so classic, can't imagine not watching it every December ha.. never heard of What's Cooking.. Pieces of April (2003) is a good underrated Thanksgiving film starring Katie Holmes, and Patricia Clarkson got an Oscar nom for it..

I absolutely love The Truman Show but I don't see it as primarily (or at all) a comedy; he spends a lot of it gaslighted and it's about his waking up, it's traumatic and even has horror elements to me; it was made at the height of "reality TV" popularity but works as a metaphor for so many things

Yeah i was disappointed by The Platform 2 as well. I really liked the 1st one but the 2nd felt like a sequel that didnt need to be made. Not that there couldnt be an interesting expansion of the world but that this sequel just didnt really expand on anything much. The symbolism of the original was obvious with it looking at class structure, consumerism etc but this one i think was exploring religion in society, which could be interesting but was just kind of too vague and unfocussed to really offer much of worth. Shame.

For Woman of the Hour: I appreciate what I think Kendrick is going for with a kind of feminist focus on how terrible American patriarchy was during the 1970s (and how, infuriatingly, many of those elements are still present in current American culture). Disappointingly though, it seems far more drama than thriller and somewhat dull overall. I assume the structure is meant to give injections of tension at various points throughout the movie, but we don’t get enough time with most of the victims to flesh them out much or to get me invested into what happens to them. In a weird way, it feels like it’s trying to use the “based on a true story” aspect as a kind of shortcut for audience buy-in (like most of the victims depicted in the film shouldn’t really require characterization because the audience should be sufficiently sympathetic toward them just from know they’re based on real people).
