Super cool! For those interested, the original is in C Phrygian, which is the scale ‘derived’ from Ab major, just starting on the third note, and treating that as the root note of the scale. It gives you different intervals than either major or minor, as you can hear in the original, although C phyrigian shares the same intervals as F minor (or aeolian, as it is it’s modal name) with the exception of the second note, which is flattened, and what is giving you that weird/ dissonant/ haunting minor second interval that give this piece it’s vibe (Db, instead of D natural). Transposing the keyboard accompaniment to the Ionian (major) is basically switching the key to the relative major of F minor/ aolian and which is Ab major, but with the vocal still in C phrygian, which juxtaposes the occasionally minor second from the vocals perspective (a super dissonant interval) which is now a perfect fourth from the synth/ keyboard perspective, creating these deliciously strange tensions. Modes are fun! (But also brain hurty).
@benjamincoggins65682 жыл бұрын
Actually, never mind. I think the whole thing was just taken down from C Phrygian to Ab major (vocal and keys transposed separately). Would love to hear a version with just the synth/ keyboard transposed to Ab major and the vocal in Phrygian (F phyrigian). It would totally work!

It's just F major; chorus is I V bVI bVII. bVI - bVII - I is an extremely common cadence, and when you look at the functions of these chords, with bVI and bVII being tonic functioning and dominant functioning respectively, it's basically just a modified I-V-I-V progression in F. The verse doesn't use the I chord but not every progression needs to.

You go on a first day with the guy of your dreams. He's good looking, independently wealthy and seems to find you deeply and unendingly interesting. After your sushi dinner, you drive through the countryside in his tasteful Aston Martin sports car. You pull up to his beautiful big but not quite a mansion modernist house. You share an expensive tasting bottle of wine next to a fireplace and he tells you stories of his family and childhood, all revealing just the right amount of discretion but willingness to be vunlerable. You notice he's got a keyboard microphone set up over in the corner of the living room, and you inquire about it. He says he dabbles and asks if you would like to hear a song he wrote thinking about the date just earlier that afternoon. You say yes, and you've just made your first mistake of the evening...

@Future Memories At the very least it’s modal mixture. The key is definitely F but we only ever hear F major chords, not minor. All the chords in the song are major. The Db chord has the Ab but that is not enough to call it F minor.
@gurrrn11022 жыл бұрын
@Future Memories the western binary of major/minor would expect at least one f minor chord in order to be f minor.
@gurrrn11022 жыл бұрын
@Future Memories plus I said it was mixed mode, no one thinks every single note in the song comes from one diatonic scale
@gurrrn11022 жыл бұрын
@Future Memories you have it ass backwards. The harmony defines the key. You only said that the melody does as a poor attempt at diversion so you can still ascribe a minor character to a piece with zero minor harmony. Major and minor is defined via the quality of the third of the tonic - the tonic being F in this piece. The instrumental introduction functions as a dominant pedal. Thom doesn’t sing any kind of A in the whole song but the F chord has a clear A natural. Calling it C Phrygian is a stretch, not least because the C chord is also major. The four chords more naturally come from F Ionian (F and C) and F aeolian (Db and Eb). An even split: not fully diatonic, not fully modal, major and minor thirds both implied. Got to go with major for the reasons above.

It’s funny how adverse to this people are. It definitely works. In fact, musicians do play around with ideas like this themselves and i wouldn’t be surprised at all if Radiohead considered trying it similarly to this. It’s really not that weird, if this came out when the original did as like 2 versions intentionally nobody would bat an eye. (Except the couple of reverse background sounds that i imagine were out of key for a second here and there due simply to not being able to convey 100 percent of every noted sound due to whatever plugins being used).

Ok I just listened to the oringinal I must say I toatally didn't expect that, because the song isn't really in a minor key. This main tonic chord remained major and all the other chords just suddenly pull towards the minor key, which sounds kinda odd, as from the very beginning I expected the tonic to be minor. That's why the altered version still actually sounds much more "complete" for me compared to the chaotic tonality of the original, and I think even objectively (if it's even possible to judge this objectively) this version is more coherent tonically (which doesn't mean it's automatically better though, the original really is interesting and unique which creates this mysterious feeling which this version lacks). Anyway I really enjoyed doing this experiment and thank you to everyone who has been waiting for the result
