It almost seems like a combination of all 3 is needed...thr blocks for base layering, the pan for starting detail, and the pencils last for fine detail. I'm debating on the blocks and the pencils. Thanks for the video.

All three paintings came out great! I think I love the middle one best. I have a set of 12 Inktense pencils and love them. I also have Inktense Paint pans (set 1), and the Graphitint paint pan set. I love them all, but am currently obsessed with the graphitint. I wish I could afford everything Derwent makes, lol; love the brand so much.

I LOVE the third one, wow. That's exactly the look I was trying to achieve adding some oil pastels on top of a piece that went sideways super fast. I am gonna order a set and give this a shot. Thank you!

This video should be shown to everyone who's unsure what (watercolor-y) medium to get. (answer: any. it's the skill that makes a painting good.) They all turned out amazing!!! Oddly i like the blocks one the most, because of that spontanous yet in-focus feel.

I'm mostly a color-pencil artist but I also use dusty pastels and pastel pencils, and trying to expand a bit more. I bought the 24ct set on Inktense blocks the other day, and at the beginning of the video I got nervous that I should've bought a different line, but now I'll do great with it and I'm ready to start painting!

I only own Derwent watercolour pencils but, like them very much & would like at some time to buy the Inktense set. Your comparisons are very good! Thanks
@tracytorresjr Жыл бұрын
This was an amazing comparison! I started with the 24 pencil set about 5(?) Years ago, and fell in love with them as a travel set. I was taking the bus at the time, so i cut them down to about 1½" stubs and stuck them in an altoids tin with an old plastic card to use for mixing (much like you did with the pencils in the palette). I ended up investing in the blocks but I went big and got the 72 pack with the thinking that I could fit all of them in an altoids tin (which I did) in the same way, by shearing off about ¾" and standing those nubs upright side by side. It works well if you're using a fine tip water brush, but anything bigger and you'll have a bunch of mud on your hands, and in your tin. However after all that, I found that the blocks just seemed to have a really gritty texture and I couldn't seem to shake it, so I stopped painting almost altogether because I was so disheartened after spending all that money for an undesired (for me at least) result. I hadn't realized at the time how big of a difference the paper made as well as the actual product themselves! I had been under the impression that the blocks and pencils would behave exactly the same if I used them with just a brush, like I had been before. All that to say, this has definitely made me want to revisit my blocks, although I just got a 72 pack of pencils, so we'll see how that goes 😅. Thank you so much for this side by side!

Thank you for taking time to write such a long comment 🙏 the blocks are definitely tricky at first, and quite different from the pencils. The only thing that indicates this beforehand is Derwents website that actually says that the pencils and the blocks are made with different binders. I love them both, although I feel like Derwent could improve the overall quality of the blocks. There is a new set of Inktense XL blocks coming out. I will be getting those as well, I'm curious to see if they changed anything in the formulation. I wouldn't be surprised if they did, as the paint pans also had a new formulation.
@tracytorresjr Жыл бұрын
@@gabriellaritaart I'll definitely have to keep an eye out for those! I really wanted to like the blocks (especially at that price point). I'll definitely do some experimenting with them. I still have my little travel tin, but I need to dig the unused portions of the blocks out from my storage. I just did a side by side on both cold and hot press paper of 0730 dusky purple, and the difference is night and day (no pun intended)! Comparing the swatches, the hues overall don't seem to match up at all, so I started questioning whether I may have just gotten a bad batch of blocks!

My experiment... I took my sticks over to a friend's house. She had purchased a lovely box of pencils . I did some colour swatching with colours that matched my sticks set. The pencils where more transparent and vibrant appearing to be more transparent. My sticks on the other hand where not vibrant and appeared chalky and streaky. I really like the pencils compared to the sticks.

Really well done and comprehensive comparison of the intense lines. I have a 12 pencil set and 24 block set. I always assumed that the hues and properties of the pencils and blocks were the same until I swatched them a few days ago on inexpensive cellulose paper. Whoa! Completely different. As you mention, paper needs to be right for the medium and the intended result. Thanks for this great video.

I have used the pencils and the pans. The colours are very vibrant and i love them. I do find it hard to mix colours without getting mud, but that maybe my fault.

My preference for the blocks is to scrape them with the back of a knife into a small dish - it makes it much easier to add water to get the opacity or transparency I prefer. Also the blocks don't soften to you can still add details with an edge. I found it really interesting to see the three beside each other.

I'm going to get the pencils too eventually, but seeing how you used them, and also the info on paper was really, really helpful. I'm so impressed by how you painted the image three times and it was very similar, despite the slightly different medium.

After seeing you paint with them, they are definitely not for me and I'm glad that I didn't get more colors. The pans are definitely my favorites and the pencils compliment them well.

Love inktense...the blocks are terrific used sideways for wide washes/ patterns base layers. They all work together light to dark and vice versa depending on the project. The pastel travel palette is pretty darn close to gouache and t's colors make interesting complements to the inks. Yr right about not assuming they will 'behave like watercolor, and they work well with every watercolor brand again as base layers and details. Another superb video missy. Ty.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have watched this one and the one in which you sketched the bears 3 times with different blocks -- twice each! 😄 I have been having a lot of fun with Graphitint XL Blocks and am planning to get some Inktense XL Blocks, too. I have been using watercolor pencils for years, but I've lately been wanting to get away from too much precision and accuracy. I find that the blocks encourage me to be looser and more abstract (while pencils encourage fussy details). And I'm afraid you are now an "influencer." 🤣

Love all the three pictures. I have a set of 36 pencils and for some reason i'm afraid of using them and watercolor pencils with water (i draw with colored pencils). Your videos always inspire me for new tries. I have the same paper and i agree with you, it´s not just affordable, but also quite good. At least, for me as a person who feels not very comfortable with watercolor it was like a salvation - it seems like this paper adds 10 points to my skill))) Certainly, there are better papers, but while i'm learning it's a great solution that will serve long. Thanks for the video!🌻

I bought the set of 72 pencils as a gift for myself and loved them but I wanted to cover larger areas and I was impatient lol. So I bought a set of 12 in the pans and loved the creaminess. Then came set 2. And then I figured, well, I may as well get the set of 72 in the blocks. 😁 I broke off small chunks of the blocks and made my own palette sets. The biggest difference is that the paint in the blocks is not as nice as the paint in the pans?? It's the same color but they've binded them differently I guess. Anyone else notice this?

thank you, this was very enlightening😊🙏 As a fan of the inktense pencils, when I used the inktense blocks I was so disappointed by their chalky appearance, leaving ugly stripes and so much less vibrancy, no matter what I tried. Now I swatched them again on 100 % cotton paper by Hahnemühle and noticed the difference. Also it seems they work much better with enough water. Then layering gives quite pleasing effects to my eye. 🙂

Thank you for commenting 😊 yes, the blocks are tricky at first, however they are wonderful on the right kind of paper. I prefer the following: Fabriano Artistico Rough, Fabriano 5 Cold pressed, Hahnemuhle Mould Made Cold / Rough. They are also pretty good on Hahnemuhle Bamboo paper.
