How magnificent it is to see Ethel Merman singing the original arrangement of EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSES.

I remember her singing this to Reagan, but can't find a recording of it. On that occasion she altered the words to "bright lights and jelly-beans"!

This is quite the find, YGLT. Thanks. Bernstein and Merman with the maestro at the height of his modulated accent. Thanks man.

Believe It Or Not The Late Singer Ethel Merman Would Sing "Everythings Coming Up Roses " To President Elect Ronald Reagan On January 19th 1981 20 Years Later. Talk About Coincidences!

Matthew Bulger I did not know that....Thanks!

I believe it, because Ethel Merman was a staunch Republican her entire adult life. But in 1961, when one was asked to perform for the soon-to-be-inaugurated president of the United States (John Kennedy), though he was a Democrat, any decent American entertainer worth her or his salt would have complied with such an honorable request to appear at such a gala event, organized by Frank Sinatra, who would become a Republican himself in 1972, after the Democrat party turned much more radically left-wing. The manners of most entertainers in those days (the 1950s and '60s), so unlike those of today's so-called entertainers in Hollyweird (which is loaded with traitorous Marxists), were mostly decent and patriotic. Democrat entertainers performed for and/or played golf with Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. And Republican entertainers did the same for and with John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, except LBJ did not play golf. In the 1980s, Ronald Reagan still enjoyed some goodwill from even some Democrat Hollywood entertainers because of all his years working as an actor, as well having been a former president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

Towards the end of her run in Gypsy. I would have loved to have seen Ethel's entire performance as Rose.

Same here. Some of the late sound board stuff sounds very poignant. More haunting than the cast recording.

Marie Marchesani Despite the time-stamped date on this, the actual date was January 19. It was the day before Kennedy’s Inauguration and NBC-TV blew it by choosing not to air this, despite the fact that it’s their cameras rolling. The show ended at 1:30 am and Kennedy was sworn in at 12 noon!

Remember watching this on TV. Kennedy Inaugural Shindig, as I recall. That night was my ninth birthday and seeing this was fairly tedious, as I recall lol. Hard to imagine a time I didn't dig Frank Sinatra, though.

You may be confusing this with something else. It never played on TV back when it was recorded.

I guess she had a mike so this could be recorded, she never need a mike to reach the second balcony in the theatre!

Lenord Bernstein intro interesting
@BTURNER19615 жыл бұрын
She could have stood on the stage in a chicken suit and mask, nobody would have cared. They used that phrase 'needs no introduction', with too much frequency. Well for virtually her entire performing career, she need only open her throat and an introduction was entirely superfluous. There was no presence like Ethel's on a stage and no voice like Ethels. I can't think of anyone that sounds remotely like Merman.

This is an old gag about Merman, but I believe it 100%: "I know there's a war going on. I read Variety." It summarizes what Ethel, and nearly every bona fide star knew or cared about world events and politics. Being a star is a full-time job needing a full-time ego. There's no room for anything else.
