7:55 They explain it a bit better in the book, but basically the Mormons put forward several lawsuits to get their ship back. However, the OPA has their hands in all the Belter courts and won't accept any verdict from an Earth court. There's a quote from the book that goes something like "I guess the OPA really is a government now, because only a government can get away with that level of thievery".

First planned expedition to a legitimately alien artifact that’s upending everything mankind knows; why not send clergy? At this point, the Ring is pretty much supernatural. And yeah, Anna’s working for Avasarala like everyone else on that ship - it’s the UN’s expedition, so Avasarala is, in effect, their boss. And yes, the expedition consists of physicists and STEM types, of course, to study it; military to assess threats; journalists to document; linguists, economists, philosophers, poets, and a pastor like Anna to provide a religious perspective. Because how does a _literal alien artifact_ fit with faith? People are still religious in this world, and they’ll want answers too. Makes sense to me, and I’m not religious. “Should have sent a poet” as the scientist in Contact says, when she realizes she won’t be able to fully communicate her experience through science alone.

Delta V (not the word delta, but the Greek letter) is used in orbital mechanics to indicate change in velocity. Like a sudden drop to......say..........zero.

In Space flight Delta V is a measure of the impulse per unit of spacecraft mass that is needed to perform a maneuver such as launching from or landing on a planet or moon, or an in-space orbital maneuver. 12:07 when Ty and That Guy interviewed the actress who played Anna, she specifically called out the actress who played her wife. Apparently she came to set for every scene she spoke to Anna in and read her lines off camera. Nobody asked her to. There were script supervisors and assistants who would often do that. She insisted on being there for Anna to play off of. Amazing commitment.

also, not precisely a spoiler, because it is described in this scene in the book; Melba is augmented with black market mods that trigger an extreme adrenal response. and I think I remember them writing that she's also augmented with some synthetic musculature (I might be misremembering that part). So the adrenal spike reproduces the "mama lifting a car" response when she triggers the gland by clicking her jaw in a certain way.

It's also so interesting because the belt doesn't have "scenery" as a part of their culture, so like... What _would_ they choose as meaningful or inspirational background art, you know? So much of our humanity regards our environment, and basically all of human history has had a _home_ (even Martian culture has a planet)... but the Belters never have.

A lovely book quote to help fill anyone in on this Nauvoo -> Behemoth change-over: "That's the kind of theft only governments can get away with" Amos remarked, "I guess the OPA's real thing now". (A kind reminder that because A CERTAIN undersecretary at the UN started a war between Earth and Mars that blew most of both fleets into scrap they've now somewhat lost their previously iron grip on the belt and outer planets, and have started dealing with Fred, Dawes and co. Hence the OPA's need for a flagship/symbol/statement.)

Anna Volovodov has a slightly different introduction in the books and her role is super interesting. The main reason for her being on the journey to the ring is twofold. First, to act as a religious leader and emotional support for the other members of the crew (which in the books is massive) because of the stressful nature of the mission. The second reason, the more interesting one for me, is to consider how the possibility of alien life can be introduced into the religious and social framework of society in a way that doesn't destabilize the system. Remember, at this point, the protomolecule has killed thousands, caused a war, made human monsters, and constructed a ring that traveled across the solar system without following the laws of physics and was observable by almost all humanity for months. The idea that the protomolecule is a weapon and aliens are coming to conquer is just a stone's throw away...
@Trepanation21
@Trepanation21 10 ай бұрын
Similarly, in the military, a Chaplain is meant to function as a versatile counselor, with or without a religious focus (at least in my experience). I view Anna's "job" in this as similar to that, but because she's so excellent, she was chosen _specifically_ for her sensitivity and humanity in such a tremendous role... A proper, _official_ "first contact".

It really makes more sense to carry non-technical people such as artists and religious people to observe an alien artifact than merely technicians. We have no idea how aliens think or why they would build such an artifact...non-technical artists and philosophers may see connections that technicians do not see. Throwing all kinds of thoughtful people with broadly different viewpoints at the problem was smart. I read the credits, I figured it would have been a flashback scene with Miller.
@Yesquire0

I have my doubts about the usefulness of including religious leaders in the expedition to The Ring. I don't think they will add anything to mankind's knowledge. But there is no doubt that proof of the existence of an alien race will do massive damage to the doctrines of many major religiions, so the leaders of all those sects will want to protect their turf by sending agents to monitor the investigation and put their own spin on whatever is found out at the ring. It not so much my own opinion, but what has been shown in just about every sci-fi movie in the past where first contact was a major theme. The religious angle is included in just about all of them, so it is no surprise we see it in The Expanse.

Yeah, the books changing in the mid season is kind of clunky. But I can’t see how they’d have condensed book 1 more than they did. Book 3 is condensed into the rest of the season tho so 4/5/6 are just a book/season. Personally I wouldn’t change what they did. On rewatch the episode/book breakdown doesn’t bother me at all. The drummer/ashford debate about the belter state is such a fascinating discussion. Who do we want to be. And yeah tbf who wouldn’t want to jump Amos but I think both of them see him as the story since he’s the most private. They’re trying to get info from him. (That’s conjecture. There’s never really an answer you just get to read the actors as you chose…)

Yeah, showrunner Naren Shankar stated in an interview that he couldn't condense book 1 in just 10 episodes they were given for the first season. But he also said that they always intended to end season 3 at the end of book 3. Cancellation or rumors thereof, as is often claimed, hat nothing to do with that decision. Funnily enough, Daniel Abraham, one of the two authors of the book series, even suggested to Shankar that they could skip book 3 entirely, because "it's very intellectualized and academic"! Buckle up peeps, that was unexpected is the mantra going forward all the way to the series finale. Also pay attention to the Martians on Bobbi’s team later on. You might catch a Canadian heart throb whose career took off in a big way recently in one of his earliest TV roles! 😉

Great reaction! The look and sound of your reaction when Mateo went through the ring! 😂 And then moments later the reveal of Miller! 😮 Interesting tib about Amos's background! Also Amos saying Prax being his best friend in the whole world! And introducing Ashford ( space pirate!) now on the Behemoth with Drummer and Naomi! Looking forward to the next one!

Nerdy, Frank Miller also worked on the Punisher series in the comics. So I fully understand your mental association.

The ship transporting the peace mission. Rather than bring all soldiers they bring civilians too. Scientists: How does this event fit in with our understanding of the universe? Artists: How does/will this event express in our culture? *Priest:* How does this event fit in with our cultural understanding of our place in the universe? I wouldn't be surprised by a strong religious element in Earth society. Most people are sitting idle, no identity/meaning through career, no identity/meaning through a function you provide to your community, family, etc. Religion and the community structure it provides is probably important than it is today. The Mormons can afford to build a multi-generational colony ship - evidence that collection plates are getting filled.

I love how every reactors first instinct when something out of the ordinary happens is “it had to be protomolecule”. Like there couldn’t possibly be any other explanation. That would be extremely lazy writing and these two have already acknowledged the quality of this show’s writing.

Reminder: the reason this episode feels like a “hard pivot” is because this is the start of Book 3. Also yeeeep. Now that’s the reaction to *that scene* that I’ve been waiting for. That guttural, primal scream was everything XD

Friend of mine did the FX for this show, he built the "blood cannon" for Maneo's scene :) said it was something like 26 gallons of fake blood.

12:45 So, she preaches as a pastor, but she has a PhD in theology. While we think it's next to impossible for life - even intelligent, tool-using, technology creating life - to *not* exist outside Earth somewhere, we don't have any solid proof. And as long as other life doesn't impinge on us, god-botherers can avoid answering the question. But it did. So the UN is trucking out a brain trust of people highly educated in academic god bothering so that everyone else doesn't have to think about it just yet.

That's an easy conclusion to jump to, but it's wrong. If you think about it a bit more, you should easily realize that it doesn't make sense, because season 3 was planned, written, and filmed way before anyone knew that SyFy wouldn't renew the show. There's an Entertainment Weekly interview with showrunner Naren Shankar where he explains why they adapted book three in just 7 episodes. Just to remind everyone of the timeline, SyFy announced the "cancellation" May 10th, 2018, after broadcast of S03E05 "Triple Point". And already 16 days later, on May 26th, 2018, it was announced that Amazon would be picking up the show. I put "cancellation" in quotes because the show belongs to Alcon Entertainment, not SyFy and not Amazon. To quote one of Alcon's CEOs (from an interview with Variety): "Unlike the way that it's phrased, which I've always had an issue with, in the press, they [SyFy] didn't cancel the show, because they couldn't cancel the show, we own the show, it's ours. They couldn't cancel our show. What they did, to be very specific, is they elected not to continue to license the show for their rights based upon the contract we had."

This is why season 3 is my favorite season. They seemed to have the funds, the vision, and the balls to go all out. I wish Amazon's stewardship of this show let it fly this high, and while I think season 4 is almost as good as this, the rest pales in comparison. This is the peak of the show, and the irony is that if it had ended here...sad but what a way to go out!

Unexplained events of great magnitude affect the billions of religious people in different ways, some of them not so well. Having representatives of the world’s faiths there to bear witness and report back would provide a level of comfort to dissuade any panic or malevolence. The investigation team is comprised of notable people from science, faith, government, and art to serve as the eyes and voices of the wider populace. Whether atheists like me or analytical people who discount art and poetry don’t give weight to those viewpoints, a large percentage of our population do. So, even from a practical standpoint, sending those non-scientific and non-military people as proxies, has functional value back home.

Ashford is the second best Character in the Expanse Series for me, right after Amos. Although he has quite less Character in the books. This is a rare, better on screen than on paper example and speaks for the writing of the first 3 Seasons.
