Weird History

Күн бұрын

Richard Milhous Nixon's presidency was full of excitement, intrigue, grievously bad judgment, and booze - which is why so many drunk Richard Nixon stories have lived on long past the man. Tales about the end of his tenure as president are no different.
In the wake of Watergate - as his removal from the Oval Office became imminent in the late summer of 1974 - it was clear to Nixon that he had to do the unthinkable. He had to resign. As he slowly accepted his fate, he turned increasingly inward, brooded, drank, swore, and took out his frustrations in alarming ways. Nixon didn't handle his liquor well, and with the end of his presidency in sight, Watergate, depression, and scotch got the better of him as his time in office drew to a close.

I mean, he did try to stage a coup with various branches of the military to keep him in power, then when they all decided not to listen to him, he stayed in the White House and got overly drunk for days on end while listening to music, and literally crying like a baby, also showing no sort of dignity or respect for the democratic process too. In the early 70s I was stupid enough to consult a psychiatrist for the depression I had, not knowing the terrible caliber of mental health treatment in Miami, FL at the time. I was stuffed full of old-school antipsychotics and, by 1974, misdiagnosed as a schizophrenic and locked up. Many memories never got processed to begin with; the rest got wiped out by the chemicals. It took me some 10 years to rebuild everyday knowledge. A lot of what I now know is from my having read about it or from watching videos.

I remember following all of this in Newsweek as a kid because my parents had a subscription. I also remember Dad sitting me down in the family room to watch because he told me that I was a personal witness to history. 11yo me would rather have been playing outside since it was August, but 57yo appreciates the fact that I really did witness history. Fun fact: Lesley Stahl was a CBS newbie correspondent in 1972. She lived in D.C. AT the Watergate. Because her colleagues were on the road, she got the Watergate story, including covering the trials. She and her cameraman were able to catch the only footage of the 5 burglars at a bail reduction hearings because she recognized them when other networks’ reporters didn’t since she’d been assigned to the early hearings. The rest was history for both CBS and Lesley Stahl’s very impressive career.

This video is just AMAZING! I'd love you to cover, over time many more, if not all, presidents in a similar fashion, even if there's not such staggering scandals around them. What I mean is the structure of this presentation is just great! Simple, essential and not for a second boring. An 11-minute cover of a POTUS is a nice thing to watch for anyone in the world! :) Keep up the beautiful great ✌️job✌️!!

In all honesty, despite any preconceived notions of who Nixon was, he really only got caught doing things that many had done, and many continued to do after this scandal. Being caught instead of the public never finding out, doesn't make him any less than anyone who proceeded or succeeded him. They just never got caught.

At 1:31 I remembered how Bob Woodward was one of the journalists who took down Nixon... back in 1972. Fast forward 48 years later to 2020, and this guy released bombshell recordings of his conversations with Donald Trump about the coronavirus and how bad Trump knew it was going to be. Woodward has been doing this for a LONG time... and he’s damn good at his job. Crazy to think that he’s been doing this for so long that he started his career as an investigative journalist exposing Nixon, and then almost 50 years later has done something similar but with Trump. Woodward is one of the best journalists out there, a true legend.
