max rebo is by far my favorite character of all time; there is something so wonderful about his simplistic design that somehow manages to be slightly unsettling though incredibly adorable. i was able to get the vintage ‘97 plush of him a few years ago, so i am partial to the four limb design. i’d like to imagine maybe there are multiple species of ortolans on orto, some with four limbs and some with two. i’d like to imagine they’re similar to the differences between humans and apes, but i’m just spitballin’.
@starwarsmusicanalysis Жыл бұрын
That’s all any of us can do until we see Max without his organ. So spitball away. Haha. I like your theory though. I actually didn’t think much of him until Book of Boba Fett came out. I was a bit surprised actually by the level of interest in him.

Well, I accept that the original maquette meant for him to have two legs, and those "ears" are actually supposed to be whale-like flippers. But after decades of action figures, comics, cartoons, and reference books showing him as having two arms, two stubby legs, and a pair of floppy ears, that's just the way Max is to me. I don't hold with Disney coming along and saying "Nope, everything you've gotten used to and grown to love over the last 30+ years doesn't count any more! We're calling a do-over, and you have to like it or else!" They can stick a thermal detonator where even the Twin Suns don't shine.
@starwarsmusicanalysis Жыл бұрын
Maybe not Disney, but if Dave Filoni decided it, I’d go with it. But I agree, we’ve become used to another image so I doubt they’ll ever actually address it, like Yoda’s species.

The Max puppet in Mandalorian is pretty terrible, it seems like they almost completely neglected to pay attention to the original puppet. Great video! For me Max will always be a flabby blue penguin playing the Nalargon with his toes and happily flapping his flippers.
@starwarsmusicanalysis Жыл бұрын
Thank you! My head cannon is that Max was horribly scarred from the explosion of Jabba’s Barge and underwent either a molting (if his species does that) or plastic surgery.
@Blokewood3 Жыл бұрын
Because of Max's reaction shot during the thermal detonator scene (where he covers his head with his "hands") it's impossible for me to see those limbs as legs. They do look like legs when the puppet is empty, but his body language in the film is clearly arm movements.
@starwarsmusicanalysis Жыл бұрын
I never even considered that but that’s the best argument I’ve heard yet.

max rebo and ortolans do have arms and legs, in star wars the old republic they are shown to have all 4 limbs

They’re shown that way in a lot of places, but none of which are canon, which is what creates so much confusion.

I don’t think they would hold up in the eyes of Disney. When they bought the franchise, only the actual movies and Clones Wars were left canon. I think ultimately we just don’t know for sure. I wouldn’t be surprised if they reveal tomorrow that he has just 2 arms, just 2 legs, or all 4 appendages. But ultimately, I think it’s something that will be left unanswered forever.

I heard from somewhere that Max’s arms are his ears and his feet are his arms
@starwarsmusicanalysis2 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard the same thing before. I think of it this way: His arms are arms because of the way they’re hinged. They were originally designed to be legs in concept art but they are anatomically arms because that was the only thing that worked for the designers. His ears are ears. They don’t have any similarities to being arms. We don’t know if he has legs because we’ve never seen him away from the organ in canon.

Does anyone know what happened to the original max rebo puppet, could it be that it just destroyed itself over time?
@starwarsmusicanalysis2 жыл бұрын
If I had to guess, it’s likely in one of the massive Lucas Film storage units, probably right next to the Sy Snoodles puppet. They clearly decided to go with a new variation though that’s more practical and capable of playing like a real keyboardist. Most of those props are well taken care of though so I doubt they left in an environment where it could just deteriorate over time.
