It's kind of hard to pin down exactly what this is. It could just be unused code which Toby tried to get rid of but accidentally made seem really creepy. My best guess is you would have entered the stable from the farm, then you would have been brought to redacted's room, which probably would have been decorated to look like a stable or something. The redacted NPC probably would have been just a minor character with some silly dialogue or an item or something. Maybe it was going to be another one of Napstablook's family members considering it has the same ghost property as Napstablook. Perhaps it was meant to be the main focus of the snail farm instead of Thundersnail. Based on the fact that the stable room isn't decorated at all, and that the stable itself uses an obvious placeholder sprite in the same style as the game's other placeholders, I'm guessing it was cut pretty early in its development. Maybe Toby didn't want to completely remove it in case it'd break something, so he just redacted it, thinking it would end up being less creepy than it ended up being. We don't really have enough clues to proceed here. I kind of doubt it really has that much significance though, and it's probably not Gaster.

its very likely youre right and i honestly think most people wouldve just assumed that and been done with it if it wasnt for the wingdings font. not sure if the code just mixed up in a weird way, but the inclusion of that font makes the whole thing feel intentional since thats something you usually have to go out of your way to make happen. if im remembering correctly wingdings isnt present anywhere else in the game except there and entry 17

Why can't both Mysteryman and Redacted be Gaster? Afterall, attempting to make your name Gaster in either game closes it as if the name is redacted. Not to mention that Gaster's existence is sort of all over the place. For example there's that one follower that claims to be "holding a piece of him", and yet the sprite seems to be talking from the piece being held, which makes you question who's even talking.

There's something I found that could be a base point for new theories. In a game Toby has played before, a game I have no knowledge of personally includes a secret. The game was made in early 2000s I believe, and its called Yume Nikki. In a specific room, you can turn off the lights. At a random chance in turning off the lights, a head appears in which looks similar to the head of the Mysteryman. The community refers to it as Uboa. This secret was a bit popular in 2011-2014. There is something else that adds to the correlation aside from Uboa looking like the Mysterman. In Toby's old Earthbound Halloween Hack, we see a head that looks similar to Uboa except it had some minor edits to the sprite. Since Toby has no association with the development of Yume Nikki, it is a bit unlikely for there to be a direct correlation. One interesting theory I saw on Reddit a while ago is that Redacted is what’s left of Grandpa Semi after he was cut during development. There are three main pieces of evidence for this: 1.) In the code of the UT demo, Grandpa Semi’s code was located between Sans and Alphys’s phone calls, implying that he was planned to be located in the area between those two characters, which is Waterfall. 2.) Both of Redacted’s encounters are located in Waterfall-one being an the infamous pitch-black scrapped room, and the other being the scrapped stable at Blook Acres. 3.) According to the UT Art Book, Naptsablook was initially conceived as a test enemy, and only added in later on after testers expressed interest in them. This implies that some other character was planned to run the snail farm, and given Redacted’s appearance in the stable as well as the fact that Napstablook’s house is just a redecorated version of the Skelebros’ shed, this was likely Grandpa Semi. It’s possible that Grandpa Semi served as the basis for what would later become Gaster, hence why Toby decided to cover his scrapped encounters in a “Gaster-colored” layer of paint so to speak by scribbling out the sprite and making him speak Wingdings. Edit 1: Someone also just reminded be about the scrapped Waterfall dialogue near the snail farm which mentions a skeleton that explains orange attacks. Given that Sans and Papyrus are pretty well-known for their antics, it’s unlikely that this was either of them. Thus, this seemingly reaffirms the notion that Grandpa Semi was going to appear in Waterfall. Edit 2: Someone else also pointed out that Sans’ theme plays at the snail farm. Another piece of evidence pointing towards Grandpa Semi.

It uses Rabbit Girl's sprite as a placeholder and was going to appear in Waterfall.[2](obj_orangeattackNPC is found among other Waterfall objects) Its dialogue is seemingly a follow-up of Sans's explanation of blue attacks. Dialogue That skeleton over there just told me how to dodge "orange attacks." What did he say...? Something like... "Traffic lights have three lights on them." "The third light, the green one, means GO." "The first light, the red one, means STOP." "The second light, the yellow one, means YIELD." "In order to dodge an orange attack, you must be moving." "So, just think of it this way..." "Red and yellow lights together make orange." "Then you obey the rule of the leftover green light, which means GO." "Easy, huh?" "Just think of a red and yellow traffic light which is actually green." Yeah... Then he started talking about plaid attacks...

I guess it's worth mentioning that I had dug through the redacted and stable code a month ago and found some interesting tidbits about it regarding where it should go. 1) Putting the stable in the snail room places its collision box out of bounds, so I'm not sure it should really go there. 2) The redacted room and redacted object are programmed to play Napstablook's music if playing their music. The snail room turns off the music if entered. 3) When the horse stable opens, the collision box is deleted, so it evidently WAS supposed to have collision of some kind. If you consider solely its collision box position and the Napstablook music thing, I feel it should actually be put in the tranquility room between Napstablook and Undynes houses. I actually made an mod where I tried to finish the horse stable based on what was already done with it, including a bit of interpretive dialogue to use the different text prompts better. Redacted always bothered me. It's such a strange and not talked about character in the community. I always wanted and still want a clear explanation to what redacted ACTUALLY is. My theory is the he is Gaster, and he really was wiped from the game as a whole for the sole purpose of suspense and mystery.

I feel like the existence of the snail stable (Snable!), and the fact that the redacted stable has the same sprite could possibly mean that the Snable would’ve been replaced with the redacted one with a specific fun value. That would keep some of the mystery, and would lead more directly into the Mystery Man we have in the game today. Doubt there is any justification for this in the code, but it would be interesting. If I were to expand my little theory, I would also say it fits nicely into the narrative of the goners and the fact that, most likely, very few people we even know about this part of the game, which is the message being driven home by many of the goners in Undertale, especially goner kid.

Given that, as seen by the early draft of the Winter Alarm Clock dialogue, Toby had not thought of Dess during Deltarune's initial 2011-2012 development, and even into 2016-2017, Redacted would not even be Dess, even if Redacted were still part of his big DR-Gaster plan. Another thing to consider is that, while Redacted was very much intended to be Gaster-related upon its creation, it seems to be extremely early. Many similarities to the Mystery Man event, but with many key differences, mainly in the very notable lack of 6s, among other things. Not all Gaster-related things have 6s, of course, but the majority of them do, including Mystery Man with the fun value of 66, and ESPECIALLY if its Gaster himself. It seems that not only was Redacted supposed to be (a form of) Gaster like Mystery Man would be, but that the design wasn't nearly finalized, or even was the 6 numeric motif. This would have to be something from really early in Undertale's development, like in 2013. This would also suggest that, while Toby may have had an idea for Gaster during DR's initial development, he was but a vague concept at best, leaving it to UT to actually develop him into a much more defined and actual character, with complete backstory, design and connections to other characters and other UTDR events. If these observations are correct, here are the things that would then be confirmed about Gaster, namely by what Toby had in mind for him at this early part of his development: -Mysterious -Spoke in Wingdings and abc_123_a voices -Thus, he is related to Sans and Papyrus, familially or otherwise, skeleton or otherwise -Mystery Man is indeed Gaster -Had to do with darkness -Semi-corporeal -Had to do with water in some symbolic way -Monochromatic/black and white appearance -A *premonition* for Deltarune

What weirds me out the most abt [Redacted] is that it is so weirdly unique. Even Mystery Man, as unique as he is, still shares similarities with the other goners. But nothing, not even other cut content in Undertale was redacted like, well, [redacted]. And combined with this triviality for the possible purpose behind it: like it would just be a quirky dialogue interaction in Blook's snail farm, it just weirds me out so much. Reminds me a bit of Uboa, which Toby was definitely inspired by when he made Gaster, just being in such an inconsequential place. I imagine you'd just open the snail stable, releasing all the snails who do a (slow) escape while Blook comically mourns having to catch them or smth. Then you go inside and Blook has another funny dialogue, maybe abt how big the stable is. But why go through all the trouble of redacting all that? I could maybe get it using placeholders, but that's not what happened...why redact even the sprite of all things? And why the sad music? Maybe he planned on some rare event similar to the mysteryman? Who knows... More than any other instance of goners, I feel this captures the most what it is like to be/see one. An unrecognizable blurred mess in an inaccessible place with few broken pieces (broken code) which ties it back into the familiar world, but no one is sure what its purpose even was meant to be. And the world functions just fine without it...

To Gaster and Menu Music or The Inner Workings of the Game's Entirety. So clearly this's important we already have three people trapped in the code [REDACTED], Gaster, The Vessel. And Parts of Interactions/Events that we should've found in both Deltarune and Undertale so obviously Toby Is saying both are deeply connected to each other so the story has a secondary deeper plot in play.

Now, if I had to guess- pure speculation. I think that the context of this wasn't originally related to Gaster or mysterious stuff at all. Based on Undertale's sense of humor and the odd implications of where it's meant to be placed, I think there was going to be another ghost, possibly even one of the ones we know (maybe the ghost in the ruins dummy? It matches with their apparently shy nature.) trapped inside the stable, who would ask Frisk to let them out by finding a key. They would then realize, oh, they're a ghost and they could have just phased out anyways. After that point, they're free to just be an NPC. As for why this was redacted, it wouldn't fit with Napstablook's tragic situation. Napstablook is alone and sad, their entire family abandoned them, so having another ghost at Blook Acres would conflict with that subplot, but if it wasn't a ghost the joke would be ineffective, so it was scrapped. Now, why was it so heavily redacted? No clue. But, it's seemingly meant to be placed in Blook Acres, in a very goofy situation in a lighthearted room, with a potential joke that feels very on par with the game's sense of humor, using the same transparency-proximity code that Napstablook uses on account of being a ghost. This doesn't seem like something that would heavily relate to Gaster in any way. Perhaps it was repurposed into that when it got scrapped to create a false sense of mystery where there wasn't meant to be any, hence why the other stable, the one with regular joke text that obviously connects it to the snail farm, was completely removed from the code in 1.001 instead of just redacted like the other stable was.

I personally think redacted isn't Gaster as it is a PART of Gaster. We know Gaster was shattered across time and space and shattered means that something broke in to many pieces. It really seems like "redacted" and the "horse stable" are early concepts for the blooky ghosts; the key and lock are somewhat reminiscent of happstablook's house, the "snable" is obviously related to napstablook's snail race, and the [redacted] sprite having a "ghost-like" fading effect suggests that it is a ghost.

Obviously the secret is that the Dreemurrs originally ate horses, before Toby decided to change it to snails. This change required Gaster Blasting the entire concept to make sure there were no remnants left.

There's something quite disturbing about the idea that redacted was once a real character with a name, a life, a soul and a face, but when they were... well... redacted, all that went away. they have no name, their form is lost in the darkness unless we are nearby, and their face... the thought of it being scrawled over and censored, leaving nothing left, is horrifying. When I was looking into redacted when I first got into Undertale mystery stuff, I always sorta saw the sprite as having sort of "ring girl hair" but white instead of black. Of course that's definitely not what it is but I wonder if anyone else ever thought something similar.

yep i also thought that lol. thats part of why i started thinking that redacted might actually be dess after chapter 2 gave us some more hints about her disappearance. plus if you look at the top left of redacted's "head" it kind of resembles an antler sticking up. very possible this theory is wrong of course, but ive always thought redacted was a little too randomly shaped for a simple placeholder sprite. even more so since undertale actually has a dedicated placeholder sprite within its files. just seems a little strange me to that toby would create a second placeholder sprite for the sole purpose of testing out the code for the ghost vanishing mechanic

My guess is that this whole thing was a normal, probably humorous event that Toby decided to scrap at some point fairly early on and then, for whatever reason, decided to just vaguely tie it in to all of Gaster's stuff after he was conceptualized and things related to him started being added to the game (which was probably after the True Lab was completed). While Gaster himself is *likely* based in some way on the unused Grandpa Semi character, Gaster himself probably wasn't added until fairly late into development.

I knew there was unused code for the stable and such, but I've never seen any of the other things like the extra dialogue slots or the hardlocked solidity coordinates. Hell, I haven't seen any ingame footage of the stable with it's doors open. It's so interesting to see it all mostly working at once. The more I think about it, the more I really think this must've been an early Gaster. So, in a way, this implies mystery man probably is some form of Gaster, as it seems to me that it was just a rework of the waterfall redacted room. HalfBread, I think the reason the mystery music and wing dings were used isn't necessarily because it is lore relevant to Gaster, but may be alluding to the end of Deltarune. I mean, Sans acts like we already know his back story, despite being the man from the other world. So I theorize that Undertale is (while adjacent to Deltarune) is still effected by Deltarune's ending. So that we can look at Undertale in a _different way_ with the *context* of Deltarune when all of it's secrets are revealed. I say this because of the story themes around all the hidden secrets in Undertale. The music in the REDACTED room being a sad slow melancholy song, and it's title referencing remembrance of something. It gives the general vibe of grieving something that is gone now. Same with Sans and how he mainly focuses on "not being able to go back". Technically even Entry 17 isn't actually supposed to be there. And the goners that aren't Gaster Followers also have this sad grieving feeling about them, like the goner kid. In other words... Creepy music could be Gaster's thing. But sad music, regardless of wingdings or creepy or mysterious context, it likely has more to do with the general ending/story of DELTARUNE..

I think that Undertale never told us who redacted was because it was already redacted back then. Yes he's the knight. But what if gaster is also just gaster? It may be the reason why some of Sans Dialogue is gone. Also explains the absence of content that was cut from the game so this's definitely a part of the overall lore of all 3 games.

You know what is interesting about the HORSE Stable? There was implications Ch3 has a Western segment and in turn Horses but also Ch3-5 are when we meet the Knight. If I recall correctly there is a rumor that the Western segment might be cut which seems minor but in context it makes sense. What if meeting the Knight comes after a cheerful and silly segment? It was tested and they found out the whiplash between super silly to meeting the big bad was too much.

my personal theory as to how this would have appeared in game, is that the snable would be there at all times, but in a fun event with a very low chance (just like the mystery man's room) either a second stable could appear or it could replace the original snable

I'm on the [Redacted] is Gaster-camp, between the windings and everything else, it just seems to me like either [Redacted] was an early version of the Mystery Man event maybe (possibly "left" in the game to add to the mystery) or just an alternative version of the event- as in, Gaster was split across time and space, maybe both Mystery Man and [Redacted] are Gaster, or more specifically, different parts of him. Also, to me at least, the sprite kinda looks like what I imagine Mystery Man would look like if his face/entire head started melting

Probably a mandela effect, but I could swear that, by snooping around in the cut rooms, there would be one very similar to the snail race room, except the horse stable would be there and be semi-functional, redacted was in it, and it could be opened with the key without modificatons to the code, I believe it was something like version 1.0.1, also to note that most "functional" cut rooms have similar background as waterfalls, wich always struck me as odd, like the fire sprite test room, it may hint that waterfalls is the most ancient part of the game, the one that toby fox started with, which could explain such cut content and why toby kinda hints at it being there, probably being most attached to those redacted events, in some way, like them being his firstborn child

This redacted entity is really a enigma, I have reason to believe that redacted is some earlier version of napstablook or maybe even one of his other cousins, considering he disappears if you get far away enough, and that the stable was just some random quirky side thing in waterfall. that's what I would have said, if it were not because of the inclusion of the wingding's font, what if it's just to test the wingding's font? Or is there something at play here? Nonetheless I'm excited if this is relevant to the future chapters of deltarune. forgotten, but never gone.

The stable strikes me as a Christmas reference. Deltarune continues these Christmas themes, but with a certain Holiday family who were absent from Undertale. We know that Deltarune was the game Toby wanted to make at first, but instead made Undertale. The wingdings the stable gives is a mail letter, with a cancel x button afterwards like on a computer program (an email). Gerson has references towards the "Delta Rune" and the Angel, but also telling how Undyne beat up a mailman. I believe the traffic jam in Deltarune, caused by Undyne, references this NPC specifically, as there is a SNAIL also stuck in the traffic (Snail Mail, it's a pun). Scared Donut Guy then, supported by their appearances, is our mailman (by all coincidence also a Gaster Follower) and the previous customer of the stable who mysteriously vanished. The container of snails in Asgore's fridge suggest he's the hairy guy who visits the farm monthly, and that Asgore visits so because the mailman no longer delivers his snails, for fear of Undyne. However when we consider the pink clothes of Deltarune's scared donut guy, and the yellow clothes of Undertale's scared donut guy, it's possible there's also orange and cyan scared donut guys we've not seen yet, which would correlate to the colours of the Addisons. The Gaster Follower's scared donut guy would then be Spamton's creator in Deltarune, and the original snailsman at the farm.

It really looks like there was supposed to be a quest in the snail farm but it got cut for the Blooky date. Maybe Toby wanted the trash can inside Blook’s house, and then they were supposed to tell you something about the stable when you got the key. It mayyy connect with Gaster over the wd-s and he was actually supposed to be a side character early in development, but considering it’s locked under dog-check it’s probably best ignored.

It's Mettaton's ghost form. Mettaton is Napstablook's cousin, so it stands to reason that he was originally a ghost and fades in and out like Blooky. It's [redacted] because, as a trans character (snail-farming ghost to glamorous robot TV star), his original appearance is basically his deadname.
