We have MORE details and sample images from the new Mint 35mm camera. In this video we round up everything we know about the new Rollei 35AF and discuss how this new 35mm camera compares to the new Pentax 17 film camera. This new Rollei 35mm film camera will feature autofocus and shoot a full 35mm frame. These are exciting times for film photography and we can only hope these cameras both sell really well - that way we get even more in the future.

The original Rollei 35 was a scale focus viewfinder camera, not a rangefinder. Bellamy Hunt of Japan Camera Hunter showed a working prototype of the 35 AF on his channel last week.

I wish Rollei and Pentax/Ricoh much success. I would love to see a strong market for new film cameras. If the Rollei 35AF is priced at around $725 I would definitely choose it over the Pentax 17 because of the auto focus and full frame features.

Yeah no brainer, although it does sound like the rollei will be 800. At 800 dollars its a bit of a choice, but I think after 2 years id still be into the rollei while some love might fade for the pentax. Also the lens even looks better, which is wild when theyre up against pentax themselves! Full disclosure, I am definitely a rollei style person rather than pentax just generally.

The differences between the Mint 35 and the Pentax 17 in features and price point make sense. I know a lot of people watching the Pentax release wanted something more like this at a lower price point than what the 17 is going for, but looking at the relative pricing of the two that doesn't seem reasonable. The 17 is already doing gangbusters, I hope the Mint 35 sees a similar success. It would be nice for manufacturers to see that there's money in the analog market.

I guess I hope it works out. But I know that one of the worst camera experiences I've had was with a MiNT/Rollei Instax TLR. This isn't anti-Instax, I've had basic Minis and enjoyed them. The viewfinder was bright, but the exposure system was probably the worst I've seen (the meter isn't covered by the NDs, so exposure is all guesswork in the worst way). There was always horrific vignetting even when stopped down due to slightly off-center aperture plates. The focus was very fiddly and felt imprecise--the dial was too small and had too fine a focus throw. All in all, I felt I had much sharper and better exposed pictures with a basic Fuji Instax. Add in the fact that MiNT's marketing plan for the Rollei 35AF has been to pretend that they don't know how to make a camera, or else they just were clueless about what they were actually doing, and my confidence in them absolutely cratered. Anyhow, my Pentax showed up yesterday, and I'm excited to take it out as soon as it's not raining. The handling feels good, enough control to be hands-on, enough automatic to keep it casual, the viewfinder is big and bright. Plus, I kinda like that it's a weird little thing. There's a lot of ways in which, on spec, the 17 is worse. But I trust Pentax as a company (both historical film and modern digital) while I don't trust MiNT at all.

500 for the pentax seems like a lot, but it's not bad for the quality. Under 800 for truly modern autofocus sounds pretty reasonable. Either way, these should make for some nice, fairly consumer friendly new film cameras. Despite the zone focusing on the pentax, it's very similar to a lot of old trip style cameras and even the options on the instax cameras.

I think Pentax would have been smarter to make a SQUARE format 35mm camera. That would be truly unique as I’m not aware of any decent modern 35mm film camera in that format. You’d still get better film economy and a camera that never needs rotating.

What kind of film would you shoot 35mm squares on? 35mm film negatives are 35mm×24mm (well, roughly, depending on how you measure).
@BillLovesFilm
@BillLovesFilm 25 күн бұрын
24x24 - any aspect ratio can be shot on any film - the camera just needs the film gate and winding mechanism sized properly. There are 35mm film cameras that exist in square format, but it hasn’t been done in many years. Cheers!

@saschamilenkovic4320 25 күн бұрын
@BillLovesFilm Yes if the smaller side is used then can be a square, a 24mm format (rather than 35mm) it would be then though really. Would mean more frames per roll.

The Photographic Hoi Polloi will always gripe about what any camera DOES NOT have for them. Note: no camera ever built, fabricated or dreamed of has ever been perfect for everyone. (I am 68, have been photographing for 50+ years, worked in 35/MF/LF, taught photography at both community and state college and currently have a Toyo field camera, Mamiya 6, Canon 5D SR, Exakta, Polaroid I-2, and will be adding the Pentax 17 - each imperfect in their own way, hence the variety: match the imperfections with the desired/required application!) They need to understand, as you alluded to, to create, engineer, design, manufacturer, ship, market, warranty, extra parts for repair, train, etc… costs A LOT of money. And the dollars they spend NOW are 2024 dollars, not 1990 dollars. The Hoi Polloi live in a fantasy world. Everyone else lives in the real world. I think Pentax made some gutsy moves: zone focusing, half frame (and its requisite portrait orientation), and created a compelling product. At a reasonable 2024 price. Good video!

@@robblincoln2152 An also excellent camera. Those TLR MF (Yashica, Rollei, and Mamiya were the cameras I got started on. They put the photo hook deep inside my heart and my mind and my DNA! That was back in my freshman year in HS, 50 years ago. The Mamiya 6 is, in my mind and to my needs, the most perfect camera ever made - and I’ve used and worked with a lot of great (and not so great) cameras in the past 5 decades. I’m very glad to still have this 6 in my life, first bought in 1990. Enjoy your camera. There’s an elegance and charm and a long rich history to those cameras. Happy shooting!

I think both cameras may serve a different market. I believe the Pentax 17 will do well with young people that shoot photos with their phone solely in portrait orientation so, the 17 makes sense to them. For old farts like me the Mint Rollei 35AF may be more interesting. I do consider buying the Pentax 17 first however because it is already available and to express my appreciation to Ricoh/ Pentax for having the guts to make this camera. I hope others will do so too.

While the first 15 years of consumer point-and-shit digital cameras with their worthless contrast AF have left a bad taste in my mouth, I totally trust the IR-AF systems on my 80s/90s compacts. The system measures the distance (usually instantly), then racks the lens. No muss, no fuss.

dunno what pentax was thinking with the decision to use zone focus. meanwhile this rollei has a better formula, as point-and-shoots are beloved by both beginners and experts. although, I would have gone with a yashica t4 type camera-skip the nice metal body to save money which would have made it more accessible, and simply focus on a solid lens that would give solid results.
