When I re-read Genesis over the summer after being out of the religion for 25 yrs, the thing that really stood out to me was that the creation of woman was an afterthought. In fact the whole book shows there's no blueprint God was following or original plan. He literally made it up as he went along. When God thought to himself, in his omniscience, that his man should have a suitable helper (didn't he think of that BEFORE?) the very next verse was that God created all the animals, birds, etc and brought them to Adam, "but no suitable helper was found among them." This tells me God expected Adam to find a helpmate from the animal kingdom, but when that didn't work, he then performed invasive surgery without Adam's consent. Why wasn't she formed from the dirt and breathed into like Adam was? Makes no sense. The only conclusion I can come to is that this was the author's way of making woman subservient to the man even in her creation - but that wasn't good enough so then in the next chapter totally set her up to take the blame of the fall of man. What better way to set in stone the patriarchal privledge the men enjoyed while simultaneously stigmatizing half of the population for all time because of the literal interpretation and not recognizing it's a mythological story seemingly written by a kid (that's how it reads to me). So much pain and suffering women from all cultures have suffered because of this horrific book.

Exactly. That's what I don't understand. This is literally just ancient mythology. Yet people will think you're insane if you believe in mythology but not in religion today.... If anything, I'd prefer for people to believe in mythology, because the gods are shown to have emotions and to not be all knowing and perfect, and that's far more realistic than the Christian god.

John Daedalus to understand the Bible, you first have to realize that each book differs by author. Meaning, some books/chapters are meant to be taken literally, while others are metaphorical. When you get that wrong, such as the fool in this video - you lose all comprehension to illiteracy.

There is a difference between literal (studying the Hebrew in it's original context) and literalistic (sticking to a watered down English translation). Genesis 1:1 is the quickest example. The Hebrew word for "in the beginning" is breshit, which contextually doesn't refer to a single point in time, but a long process. Jewish translations of the Tanakh even translate breshit to "when". So it is actually "when God created the heavens and the earth". Therefore the text is "literally" true, but "literalistically" it is taken out of context. Literalists take a high context text and violently force a low context interpretation. If you unearth it in it's originally meaning you get something far more practical. In fact, according to Jewish translations it is "when God created the heavens and the earth". The clues are in the contextual usage of the Hebrew word. The same goes for a lot of Hebrew words. English and ancient biblical Hebrew are so vastly different, culturally and ideologically, that you can't get an exact match. The fact of the matter is that the Hebrew wordplay in Genesis 1-3 is by far the most poetic out of the entire book. The word usage is very vague and enigmatic, in stark contrast to the plain, straightforward, and watered-down English translations. Here are countless more reasons why evolution and science is perfectly compatible with the Bible: kzbin.info/aero/PLsYCe6PgQNj0nYYSxeAzHuDflxRQ_V69t

If you have a language that calls something X in their language and you mistakenly translate it into something in your language call Y thinking it means X Then you will continually perpetuate that error. Give me the name of the animal that has four legs, a tail, and gives milk and you could be describing a cow, a sheep, a goat, or even a horse because no one specified that the milk was for human consumption. If I try to talk to many Christians I know about this topic, they just shrug it off and say it doesn't matter. So what if there really wasn't a talking snake, or if Eve didn't come from a rib, or if Adam didn't come from dust, all that matters is that God made us and he loves us. They deep down realize it's a bunch of BS, they just don't want to believe that there isn't some loving creator looking out for us and promising a heaven to go to. And here in SW Georgia, there are almost no agnostics or atheists, or at least any that admit to it. Logical thinkers are very few.
@fredworthmn5 жыл бұрын
Try this one with your Xian friends. Genesis was written AFTER 600 BCE based on tales they heard while in Babylon captivity. This is agreed upon by all Jewish scholars and those Xian scholars who will admit it. Xians get so excited about finding "the Tower of Babel" without realizing that it negates the prehistoric origin claims made about Genesis. This tower was built just prior to 600 BCE and would have been the first thing the Exiles saw as they approached their new home. The tower was functional for around 250 years before it fell into disrepair and was cannibalized for other building projects. This from a Rabbi, "Eden" is a metaphor for Temple of Holys. Xians still don't understand metaphors and allegories except when the text forbids something that they want to do. (That's called "justification".)

We all have it, but so many of us refuse to admit they we suffer from it, because we so readily associate being wrong with being unintelligent or something like that, when in fact, being wrong should be celebrated as an important part of the learning process. I'm not saying you are wrong, just saying that when we refuse to accept the possibility that we could be wrong, we can never find out if we are. Anyways, all the best from an atheist in Australia. That fact that he brought out the flaming swords to protect the tree of life afterwards shows that he was capable of guarding the tree of knowledge but chose not to. It'd be a slam-dunk case. However, I think God would be judgement proof, making it hard to collect damages. You could try collecting from a church but they are going to say that they are not liable for God. They can collect in his name, but they are just not liable in his name. Totally sucks.

Care to take on the challenge of creating a seed that can grow a unseen or unheard of flower or some type of new fruit? You are aware that man THINKS we evolved from apes right? EVERY SINGLE skull and bone fragments found IS NOT any kind of proof simply because there was NOT enough to tell what these fragments WOULD HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN. So man used computer models designed by him to fill in the missing portions and structures. In other words NOTHING MORE THAN SPECULATION. The rest of what man THINKS happened is the same SPECULATION. That IS NOT FACT, the fact is he found skulls and bone fragments and THATS IT. So its like God is making you a good person. ME: Ummmmm no God doesn't make anyone good or bad. In other words you were completely free to write what YOU chose to write. So God really gave us consciousness to f**k with our mental states. ME: My conscience steers my behavior to do what's right. He might as well made robots in that case and the programming would keep ANYTHING from going wrong. The reason he didn't is because it WOULD NOT be real, no capacity to love. The ONLY WAY that love can exist is for beings to have choice. Imagine a child hugging their parent and telling them "I love you", imagine now that it is just a robot running a program. Is that real? That we are in his image. So really he is just like us. Isn't that strange to you. God made the universe. You know ANY human beings that can speak light into existence how about create earth and give it an atmosphere and then create life on the planet. eve from the rib has a logical explanation : this story is taken from the mythic story " Enki and Ninhursag " a myth about creation ... by sex between divinities. along the story between the both divinities who happens in a ... garden with water , Enki eats plants who are in fact his daughters ( this is a myth not a claim of real history, it is all about symbols ) while he was forbidden to do it by Ninhursag , and as a punishment Ninhursag punish him by giving him a disease for each plan eaten in a place on his body, and it is painful for Enki. And one place is ... the rib. But Ninhursag takes Enki in pity and decide to cure him, by removing each plant and making a daughter from each disease. And then the "lady from the the rib" ( ninti in sumerian ) is called ninti , meaning lady who gives life. And then redactor of the genesis 2 , were just copying the myth for the creation of eve, lady who gives life. There are great chances that the garden of Eden is just inspired by the garden of dilum from Sumerian myth. In any other cases it does not makes sense.
