Yeah, I had the same problem with Disney's live action remake of SLEEPING BEAUTY. In MALEFICENT, she's supposed to be a good fairy from the start, but she's inexplicably named Maleficent. Maybe the writers forgot or didn't know that maleficent is an actual word and it means "harmful or evil in intent or effect." Why does this good fairy, who we see defending helpless woodland creatures and healing trees, have such an evil name? It would've made more sense if she had a different at birth, say, Beneficent (which means "doing or producing good") and she earned the moniker Maleficent AFTER she turned evil. Then again, she never becomes truly evil in MALEFICENT. She's the goddamn hero! Ugh, I can't tell you how much that movie pisses me off. Terrible film and it totally ruined Disney's greatest villain by making her a rape victim.

She kept her name anyway, and since magic itself is neither good nor evil, she could pass as a good fairy with that.

MrKlausbaudelaire Makes sense, but in that case they should have said so in the movie. Giving her a name that literally means "evil" and making her look like some kind of dark angel really wasn't convincing. :/ And to be honest, I'm kind of tired of this "a man did something bad to me, so now I'm going to be a bad girl" cliche. For once, can't a female villain just be mean because she wants to be? That's what makes the original Maleficent so much more menacing, in my opinion.

Everything that happened in THE WIZARD OF OZ still happens in WICKED albeit from the Witch's perspective. And the Witch has a different name (Elphaba) at the start and only earns the title Wicked Witch of the West after she crosses over to the dark side. But Disney completely retconned SLEEPING BEAUTY and provided no explanation for Maleficent's name or origins.

While I had a blast watching this, It's hard to dispute that rhyming for long periods does tend to wear and it's also gimmicky considering since it's a Dr Seuss that automatically means the reviews have to be rhyme.
