There’s actually a way to tell which stair you need to go up in the tree hollow, the the stairs a few levels above you will have one set that aren’t lit, that’s the one you go up. But the closer you get, the torches will be lit so you have remember which one wasn’t lit.

I think the Nintendo learned from when Game Theory talked about Mario being complete sociopath for the variety of reasons that they said including Mario not seeming to really care that Luigi rescue them the first time.
