Good video. I've seen that oil distribution o ring fail on both of the 65 engines I've worked on in the past few months. Luckily, there's a secondary gasket that goes around the perimeter of the cover that will keep the oil sealed in for the most part. there is a small chamber that fills up with oil and can push/leak out of the secondary gasket if the leak is bad enough on that primary O ring. Also you'll lose oil pressure to the turbos. Pretty surprised we haven't seen oil and coolant mix since the other chamber in the valley is filled with coolant and separated by a thin strip of rubber. I'd guess we'll start seeing some failures in the next few years- especially from the early M275s.

I have a 2007 s65, just did engine and tranny mounts but I couldn’t tell anything was wrong other than the fact a vacuum hose kept coming off and tripping a check engine light, and my entire front end other than struts was shot, car rode so good and was so quiet I couldn’t tell until it went on the lift, ride quality is insane now

I always thought the "AMG" V12 had the M279 engine & the regular SL, CL & S class V12 had the M275 engine. Definitely appreciate your knowledge... & I'm definitely gonna look into the W.C. reference you've made.... I've gotta replace one of my coil packs at the moment, and I've replaced my voltage transformer. THANKS AGAIN THOU!!
@DCMotorWerks27 күн бұрын
M279 is the revision of the M275 launched in the R231 SL and all V12 models post MY2014. Up until then they are all the M275 unless its the Maybach (original maybach) have the M285. Pagani uses the M158 Version. All iterations of the same engine though

@@DCMotorWerks Thank you!!!....I Wish I were closer to your area to do business with you because I appreciate that you seem to have knowledge of the V12. A lot of auto "specialists" appear to be afraid one way or another.... I deal with a strictly Mercedes shop & even they are afraid of the V12 as well as the ABC system so I'm forced to deal with the dealership in some cases. I would luv to be involved with someone that's truly knowledgeable in this category..... Anyway THANKS, & good day to you!!!

Love how informative your content is. Is this the engine with the O ring that needs the heads removed to replace it? Ever worth that as a while your engine is out? Guessing not but had to ask.
@DCMotorWerks9 ай бұрын
I did make mention of that one in the video. This is that engine however it is so uncommon we do not worry about tearing the engine down to replace it unless it has actually failed.

About how much does an engine out service cost for this? Thinking about getting it done for my S65 soon. W221 chassis.

The engine out w/ new mounts is about $5k. Then you get into all the while you're in there stuff. Adds a few thousand usually.

For the O-Ring, is the replacement better, more resilient, and improved than the OEM to end that problem once and for all?
@DCMotorWerks18 күн бұрын
I don’t have an answer for that unfortunately. Will be another 15 years to tell. Uncommon anyhow. Think it’s more based on oil quality and oil change intervals

Nice video! But this is insanity. This is unaffordable for the average person. I can only imagine the total bill for parts and labour with a Mercedes dealer. I bet you can buy a brandnew (budget) car for that kind of money. Thanks for the effort and length of this video, I wish you're able to make more of these videos if time allows you to do so.....
@DCMotorWerks9 ай бұрын
Thank you. Yes they can definitely wreck a budget. However, they really are a lot of car for the money as much as they have depreciated but unfortunately the service costs don’t depreciate.

Yep i would rather a corvette anyday! I'm sure they designed it to be a pita to service on purpose. Im sure it drives amazing though. I have an S55 myself, and researched the v12 cars years ago. Way more expensive and harder to work on, i would choose sl55 over v12 anyday.
@lawrencefearon68303 ай бұрын
Nothing about an SL65 is for an average person. These were Mercedes most powerful engines. For those insisting on V12's, Mercedes has the most experience as the highest volume V12 manufacturer.

Anyone ever try and remove the engine from the top?
@DCMotorWerks4 ай бұрын
Not that I’m aware of. It’s not hard to get it out the bottom
@jrcperformance4 ай бұрын
you can do it on the CL/S65 models, not sure about the SL. never worked on one of those. you've got to put the hood in service position, take off intercoolers and as much of the accessories as you can but it's possible. I've also removed the engine from the front before. dropping it from the bottom is 100% the best way.
