When they sing a girl worth fighting for they are thinking romantically, but the song stops when they find a new girl worth fighting for. A small, helpless child. That’s who they’re fighting for.

@jpc1918 It would have been better if they weren't driving some artificial "men are shallow" message with the song though. But I mean the whole movie is based on feminism so it couldn't be helped. It would've just been better if they hadn't made the movie a Mulan movie because it would have made so much more sense set in an actual sexist location like Victorian England. This is why the movie bombed so hard in China. People were confused why their folk hero was suddenly championing feminism and why their culture was represented as sexist to the umpteenth degree out of nowhere.

I feel he should’ve taken off a sin for the ending scene with Mulan and her father. After she commits treachery of the highest degree for her family, Mulan comes back and begs for her fathers forgiveness. She gives him stuff; stuff that she thinks will earn her his love; but then he just pushes it aside and embraces her. That is such a powerful scene and it should’ve been recognized.

I felt the same thing. Like those are some pretty big deal gifts she brought back. Periods can actually halt if a woman's body is put under physical stress, usually athletic. Professional athletes feel hardly any if any effects at all from their periods. It's not unreasonable to assume that, since she went through such an extreme training regiment, Mulan's period has temporarily halted.

"now she's just going to go back home and conform to societal expectations" ... OR she's going home because she left to go to war without telling her family and they've been worried sick about her and she wants them to see she's alright? Ever think of that? Also, there'd be nothing bad or sexist about Mulan deciding she wants to get married and be a mother instead of a soldier. It's sexist if that's her only option. As long as she has choices, whatever a woman chooses to do is ultimately empowering.

Well dang! I do see these points about the line being cheesy/way overdue. I always heard this line as an apology from the dad. Also for me, the line means something extra special bc my mom would say it to me on my birthday and at graduations. Here's the Ted Talk you didn't ask for to explain why I love the line so damn much. And I'm serious: I wrote way too much. I'm an English teacher/BA holder sooo pls ignore the following if you're uninterested: *This line is something her father has believed all along, and he says it at the end to atone for what he said in anger to her before he left.* In the original poem, the "Ballad of Mulan," she takes her father's place to reinforce fidelity as the most important attribute. Not out of love. Not for honor-just filial duty. (That's via a unit from a professor in college.) Disney's adaptation, on the other hand, despite it being written and directed mostly by white men, has empowered girls for decades. Parents are a product of their times, and there were expectations for families to uphold, so he was understandably (not rightfully) embarrassed by her. When he condemns her, it is out of anger in the heat of the moment. No parent is perfect, and the ultimate goal is just to show love to the child you're raising. Fa Zhou shows love. In the beginning, he *comforts* Mulan after her disastrous interaction with the matchmaker: “What beautiful blossoms we have this year. But look! This one’s late. But I’ll bet that when it blooms, it will be the most beautiful of all.” He does not respond in anger, even though he is probably concerned that she will not have a match. Let's look at syntax because I'm an annoying English teacher: The verb tense emphasizes the point he is trying to make: "the greatest gift and honor *is having* you for a daughter." That's present continuous, so he means it for *that moment and forevermore*. In contrast, when he says "you *dishonor* me" and "I *know* my place; it *is* time you learned yours" in moments of anger, it's simple present. This *can* imply continuity, but is not as direct as present continuous. And how about that hug?? Fa Zhou, clearly wanting to embrace his daughter-seen from the pained expression on his face while holding her comb-lets her speak first without interrupting. The next thing he does is toss the sword and crest-emblems of honor *from the Emperor*-aside to HUG her. We only see a hug three other times (I think). Once is Mushu commending Mulan for taking her father's place *out of love.* And the other two happen in the same scene after Mulan defeats Shan Yu: Chien-Po bear-hugs the crew and the Emperor embraces Mulan's unexpected hug, both totally going against the norms established early in the film. Those hugs show how much Mulan has impacted the people/society around her. And each of those hugs come from a place of love and gratitude. So Fa Zhou's hug before he says his line further emphasizes the love he regrets not showing her sooner. All of this is to say that I love this line and apparently will nerd out over it because I'm a dork who doesn't know when to shut up???

Szabó Luca I had to read a couple of paragraphs from that book in class back when I was in middle school and it was so unbelievably awkward for me to do so since those paragraphs I read from contained well that word at least five times. And as tho things weren’t already awkward enough, I was the only white girl in my whole class, but my teacher was also white. So what did I do when I got to those words? I just skipped the word altogether. Didn’t even bother substituting. All the while I’m just sitting there thinking, why did the teacher ask me to read out loud knowing full well that that word is written throughout? But sure instead of asking someone else to read it they ask me, the only white person in the whole class to do it? Why? To embarrass me? I have no idea! But in my honest opinion nobody should say the n word anyway. No matter how you look at it, it’s an ugly, derogatory word that has no business to exist in this world anymore. No one should say it.

Second of all, you may have misunderstood my comment. I did not say, that it's okay to say the n-word. It's not, I agree no one should do it. But! Saying that this book is racist, is to me extremely ironic, because it was written againt racism, one of the main themes is "don't be racist", and of course it will have that word in it, because it was written in 1960, and the story takes place in the 1930s (if I remember correctly) and those were very very racist times. It is uncomfortable to read, but I find that book really important. (But reading it out loud? What are you even supposed to do?) It's set in ancient China where this is how things would have been, and its whole message is that Mulan can do good things even though she isn't a man. What I love about this movie is that it doesn't try to imply that women can be just as strong/exactly the same as men. In fact, Mulan thinking differently is what saves them. It shows that both genders have strengths to contribute to a situation rather than ridiculously stating that men and women are exactly the same.

The only sin that's not a sin is the one where Mulan's Dad say, "If I reveal her, she will be [dead]." Historically, doing what she did is punishable by death. They would kill her as soon as they found out.
@donovan1345
@donovan1345 4 жыл бұрын
Well they didn't find out until she revealed it herself. After she became a general, she went into a battle wearing a woman's clothes. This had a reversed affect on how it normally would affect the soldiers. It inspired the men and they won another great battle. After the war, the emperor was shocked that his finest general was a female, he wanted to reward her. All she asked for was a horse/camel (minor disagreement on what mount she rode) so she could go home. She found out her father died, mom remarried. Her family wanted her to be a concubine and sad became sad and killed herself. I'm sure if she was found out at the beginning, she would have been killed and her whole family as well for dishonoring the emperor. One huge difference in the movie and the lore, is that she knew how to fight at a young age, taught by her father.

I like to think that there's an alternate universe out there where Disney does adult aimed cartoons and the bad guy kills the Emperor before Mulan gets there and when she does she straight up cuts the guy in half. China breaks up into the Warring States exactly one time in history. It's literally called the Warring States Period. Most of Chinese history is as a whole and possibly the most peaceful country ever. Dynasties typically last about 300-400 years with the exception being the Zhou Dynasty that almost lasted 1000 years or the Xia Dynasty that lasted even longer.
@vcraig2141
@vcraig2141 3 жыл бұрын
@@plpmito5519 Doubtful. If we're going with this Shan Yu his wild swings would get picked apart by Mulan's training. Plus historically speaking the Huns never made it very far in their many attempted invasions. It wouldn't be until the Mongols replaced them and invaded hundreds of years later when China was at its weakest that any foreign power made it into the empire. And even then that only lasted like 100 years before the Ming Dynasty took over for another 300 years of peace.
