The book explained why the parents didn't expect their kid to get away from them & into traffic by having him be a toddler & having them only momentarily look away. The movie ruined that by using a much older kid. The movie then tried to make her death a twist by having Gage also run into the street but that doesn't work because she obviously has no reason for being in the movie except so she can die instead of Gage & it's not shocking even if you don't expect it because her death is less disturbing than if Gage had died. The book explained why so many conveniences let the cemetery keep being used by implying that the cemetery was manipulating everyone. It also made the concept more interesting by having each revived person/animal behave differently because they were possessed by different demons with different personalities. The movie ruined that by removing all of it & having the people & animals come back as evil versions of themselves. The book used the cat as a red herring who's actually just a harmless neutral demon & having Gage be the only one who gets possessed by an evil demon. The movie ruined that by making the cat evil & turning it into a generic jump scare robot & having the the cat & the daughter work together with the cemetery to get more demons because... because. A cat who wobbles like it doesn't know how to operate a cat body & stares at people all the time but has no clear goal is creepy. A cat that just acts like an angry cat most of the time is boring. Also, adding Gage to the crash scene & having the whole thing go down in such a complex way just gives the daughter way too much time to dodge the truck so the whole movie ends up being based on an impossible premise & it just ends up being Heavy Rain all over again.

One thing that confused me about the movie was that the resurrected people seem to have a plan to resurrect more people. In Gematria, if you write out "The Pet Sematary" spelled like this you get 666 in the Satanic cipher. But you have to include "the" which the titles do not. Oh, well. How appropriate, though. People can go on the Gematrinator site to check for themselves.

Flaws aside, one if my favorite scenes in a horror film is when Ellie comes back, gets a bath and then in bed remarks, "I'm dead, aren't I? " and the dad replies, "No you're here" and then he lays down next to her knowing what she really is... I also felt having a nine year old Ellie come back from the dead was much scarier than a two year old Gage. I also liked the final scene of the alternate ending much better, sans the extended graveyard fight between Ellie and her dad. The "family portrait" scene at the end with a horrified squirming Gage was brilliant.
@sage168211 ай бұрын
I gotta disagree with you about the 9yr old being scarier than the toddler scuddling around and being hard to locate until he attacks. Way creepier that a toddler possessed by the Wendigo being bested and whining, "No fair, no fair" as it dies a second time. The only way the 9yr old is creepier is that it has more autonomy and more strength to attack. They just made it the older sister to appeal to the woke audiences that it centers around the girl, which is fine if it was better than the original but objectively it wasn't.

The biggest sin was changing the death from Gage to Ellie, the original was so horrifying to people because it was a 3 year old murdering his family. Biggest sin in this film: Ellie is the monster in place of Gage
@D-Fens_16325 жыл бұрын
At first I didn't like that either, seemed like it was something they did just to be different from the original. But for this movie's purposes it works. Her age and maturity compared to Gage sort of took the place of my favorite section of the book, the Timmy Baterman story. When they reduced the Baterman story to a 1 or 2 second glance at an old newspaper clipping, I was really saddened. After reading Doctor Sleep when it came out, I thought a similar treatment could have been done for Ellie Creed as an adult. Though I suppose not in movie form, as they went and killed her instead of Gage.

@@D-Fens_1632 Still it's like the directors were like "Ohh we gotta make this movie family friendly so no babies will be allowed to die"

@@aeraxxis Yeah. Plus Miko Hughes was the highlight of the original film version(as well as Fred Gwynne), he played Gage perfectly and was extremely menacing when he turns evil. The rest of the first film version was average at best. This one has the opposite problem. Everything else is superbly done, but the change of the lead villian to the older daughter undermines what makes the story scary. It's a version of the Monkey's Paw legend, and the younger the child the more scary it is.

That seems to be one of the lessons people learn either from acceptance or through reaching a certain age, doesn't really make it hurt any less but I suppose it does safeguard against possible psychiatric damage.
