When I visited Patmos, the local kids pointed out to me that the fields around the monastery are rich with psychoactive mushrooms. Revelation is distinctly trippy, and I think that explains a lot right there..

That makes sense. Psychedelics can sometimes come with feelings of interacting with the divine and receiving messages from them. If I had no awareness of the effects and was highly religious, I would also mistake a particularly vivid trip for divine revelation. Luckily, I have access to information via the internet, so this did not happen to me. Being an atheist, I simply interpret it as one of the possible effects of psilocybin. Obviously, theists can also understand this, but you get what I mean.

The Greek word MYKHS -- spelled Mu, Upsilon, Kappa, Eta, Sigma -- means "mushroom" and there is a theory that the Greek words MYSTHS ['initiated one', from the verb MUEW : 'to initiate into the mysteries'] and MYSTHRION ['a mystery, secret rite'] -- where 'H' = Eta (the long 'E', as opposed to 'E' = Epsilon, the short 'E') and 'W' = Omega (the long 'O', as opposed to Omicron, the short 'O') -- are heavily involved with the ritual ingestion of the Magic Mushroom, Amanita Muscaria, which produces all sorts of hallucinatory inner experiences. John Allegro's book "THE SACRED MUSHROOM AND THE CROSS" explored this notion in the '70s, making him persona non grata amongst the team of scholars tasked with translating the Dead Sea Scrolls -- ironically, Allegro was the only one of 'em who put out translations of all the scrolls he was given to work on, the others dallying so long as to create a scholarly scandal of biblical proportions in the early '90s. REVELATION 17:5 refers to 'Babylon' as "a name of MYSTERY . . . written on [the] forehead" of the Great Harlot (etc.), and it's a good bet that the cup of her abominations that she drinks is a beverage dosed with 'shrooms, an initiatory decoction used for expanding consciousness -- which the writer of this crazy book obviously deems an evil practice, probably because the use of Mind-expanding drugs by Initiates makes the use of a Go-Between Christian priest essentially worthless.

I gotta love your description of Jezibel. Oppose the patriarchy, harlots, slut-shamed... So when I was in Catholic grade school, in one of the religious classes for the older grades (my brother was there), they had a discussion of Jezibel, and the teacher was not complimentary. It was like, "If you want to insult a woman, call her Jezibel." Well, it just so happened that there was a very unpopular nun, Sister Janet, and they started calling her Jezibel. So when I hear about Jezibel, I can only think of Sister Jezibel from grade school.

I'm making a wild guess that this was realest early. I can't help but notice that Jesus (the infinitely loving god) outright says that he is going to murder innocent children because he doesn't like their mother. Why is that not brought up more often? That translation is very misleading. The greek just says he will cast Jezebel on a bed. Not a bed of suffering. Not a sickbed. Just a bed. Also, it's very possible that John of Patmos is targeting Paul and saying he's like Balaam and Jezebel. Paul taught that there was nothing wrong with eating food that had been sacrificed to idols since those gods didn't exist. He only believed you needed to avoid it around weak Christians who could be led astray. The "sexual immorality" could have been referring to Paul's teaching that believers should stay married to their not believing spouses because the nonbelieving spouse can be made holy by their spouse. Marriage between Jews and gentiles was traditionally viewed as sexual immorality so that could be what John is talking about here. And even if its not, this chapter does still directly contradict Paul's teachings on food sacrificed to idols

@@jameshall1300 well the Bible is a collection of texts from authors with wildly different views on who God is so you have to deny some of it to get any meaning out of it. I just wished more Christians would admit that's what they're doing. Instead, they hold up the Bible as the ultimate authority so they can impose it on others and they just quietly reinterpret or ignore the parts they don't like

@@danibeck3771 yeah, I always thought the gnostic idea that the OT god was a 'lesser god' called the demiurge actually made the whole thing make a lot more sense. They went with the version that has the same god seeming to have two entirely different personalities in each half though.
@danibeck3771
@danibeck3771 Жыл бұрын
@@jameshall1300 well, He has way more than 2 personalities throughout the Bible. The God of the Hebrew Bible isn't always the violent, vindictive asshole who's prone to temper tantrums that you see in some texts. The book of Jonah portrays him as merciful and loving, and criticizes people who want him to punish their enemies. Many texts show Him as a constant source of comfort and strength. The gnostic idea is really interesting, and I've read several Gnostic texts and really enjoyed them, but I don't feel the need to reject the old testament God. The Hebrew Bible is full of wisdom and beauty despite all the other horrible things you can find in there. I don't need it all to fit together nicely for my faith

The line in verse 4, "You have forsaken the love you had at first," also translated as "Thou hast left thy first love" has been used by enthusiastic segregationists to mean "Thou hast integrated." In this interpretation, the seven churches refer to the seven races (whatever they are--white, black, brown, yellow, olive, red, and ?), and because you've abdicated your loyalty to whichever race you belonged to, you've sinned. It was in 1964 (I think) that the Southern Baptists removed this interpretation from their teachings.

I was raised by evangelicals, so I very frequently heard sermons about what is supposedly the work of the devil. Internet? Devil. Pokemon? Devil. Affordable health care? Devil. Lord of the Rings? The book was the devil right up until the first movie got made and the congregation liked it, so then their book club was all about how it's so totally a christian allegory and is thus good, ignoring how the same people called it the devil literally a month prior (without reading the book). Devil / Satan / sin in evangelical-speak just means "anything the bible thumper personally dislikes at this moment."

I grew up Southern Baptist in one of the first mega churches--First Baptist Orlando. The true cannon was the 4 gospels, some Proverbs and Psalms (greatest hits), some Corinthians and the traditional Bible stories in Sunday school for the kiddos. Not much Revelation except that Jesus is coming back and taking all the believers to Heaven and all the others will be tortured for eternity. The very high society of Orlando attended (with their expensive cars, bling bling and very big hair, it was the 80s after all) so these are not simpletons they are feeding this to. Very narrow area of the Bible is even considered. The Christmas pageant was kind of a mix of the gospels with some creative licensing to keep the plot line going. I performed in front of no less than 5,000 people per show.

Sorry, but after the S&M ideas for the "bed of suffering" forming in my head, the next verse sounds especially dirty^^ "hold onto what you have until I come" - "Oh baby, just a little longer, I'm nearly there..." "does my will until the end" - see above and add a very happy end to the act "rule them with an iron scepter" - this is probably wishful thinking from someone that would like to have one, but only reached up to a "wax scepter" max^^ "I received authority from my father" - "Oh, yeah, spank me, sky daddy, I like it when you are showing me your authority..." The morning star is probably also innuendo for something...or the rating after the act. "You will get a star in the morning when you made me have a good night." And I thought Revelations was just some drugged up person hallucinating. Maybe there is also a lot of suppressed sexuality involved...what a surprise, right?

The other explanation I heard was that revelation was a scathing rebuke of Rome. That doesn't exclude the author being stoned out of his mind.

1. Ooo, "synagogue of Satan," how very forbidding. XD Sorry: first part of this passage is just too boring to comment on. You DO get Jesus going all Old Testament on everybody, though. So supposedly, Jesus' version of God is a God of love, but then you get Jesus saying all this? Doth thou smelleth a contradiction? I doth. 2. Hmm, I mean, IF it is historically accurate, these people were persecuted by Romans and Jews alike at the time. Hell, Peter was crucified UPSIDE DOWN, which is pretty metal. You'd die a lot faster that way, though, once all thew blood rushed to your head and knocked you out. Again, though, there is an "if" around whether that actually happened. 3. "Synagogue" = Greek for "gathering place". That's it. It's vague enough to be either or both a religious or political gathering place, but think town hall, basically. 4. Up until fairly recently, eh, Catholics would circumcise their males in order to stay in keeping with Tanakh Law, which is DEFINITELY a Jewish practice. I don't know whether other Christian sects did it this late, though, but my dad and my uncle, umm...they both got "the snip"? My mom refused to do it to my brother, which, good for her. WAY too much information. But this is one of the reasons why Fundies don't tend to like Catholics. 5. There actually are cultures on our side of the Atlantic who give their children a public name and a, like, "secret" name. You're known by everyone, including your family, by your public name, but your private name is ONLY between you and God and can only be spoken by, I THINK, you and your parents. I'd have to look up which nations do that, though. I THINK it's more than one of them, but nowadays, too, you can also have an English name and an Indigenous name, both of which are equally valid to your identity. The speaker who comes to my college every year to talk anti-oppression goes by Liz in public, but her other name, the name she considers her real one, is Nakomis (if I'm spelling that right), which means "Woman Who Looks Both Ways". In other words, an impartial judge in disputes. You are, in the Oneida Nation, named according to your nature, so your real name is given to you once you've established what you nature is. I can't say for sure whether everyone, or even the majority of people in Oneida Nation, adhere to this practice, though. I'd have to research. Oneida is, like, south-western Ontario, where I live. 6. #LikeAJezebel , haha, keeping it alive for Jimmy Snow. PLEASE tell me you watch his material? 7. The Morning Star? No, that's the planet Venus. Anyone here want to rule Venus? I'm-a pass, thanks.

Empathy is one of the attributes of love. Morals is the manifestation of all attributes of love including empathy. Thus, love, morals and empathy are different versions of the same thing. So let me rephrase: How did empathy come into existence?

@@EBDavis111 According to the evolution theory, evolution is guided by survival of the fittest. The word survival indicate that other individuals have died. The more individuals have died the bigger the percentage of the survivors characteristics would be transferred to the next generation. In short, the dying of individuals are advantages to the survivors. Thus evolution works on the basis of "I hope you die". Thus, killing is an evolutionary advantage. Stealing from other individuals gives thieve more resources to survive on while decreasing the survival ability of the individuals stolen from. Consequently stealing has two evolutionarily advantages. So if the evolution theory is correct then everybody would be murderers and thieves. Considering that most people are not murderers and thieves tells us that if evolution is correct then there will have to be love that leads to morals injected into organisms to counter the effect of evolution. I believe love comes from God. I also believe that God created morals in humans.

@@truthrevealer771 Then I'll have to disappoint you, because empathy is a survival advantage. Being able to tell someone's emotions out in the wild can make a life and death difference, especially if you are in a group and your survival depends on the emotional state of your group members. It's the similar with domesticated dogs who have evolved to be able to tell emotions based on human expression, because if a dog is emotionally supportive he will receive good treatment by their human owner, increasing its survival chances. And a society in which everyone steals anything there is no trust. Scientific evidences shows trust makes societies more efficient. So as we progress through time, societies without free stealing outperform those where it is allowed. Morals weren't poofed into existence by god out of thin air. Something does not come from nothing. Morals evolved and are dependent on empathy, psychopaths lack empathy and thus don't share our morals. But what is your explanation for psychopaths who feel no love or empathy? Has god missed them when empathy was magically allocated?

Um, the Bible is not literal stuff. If you were to read Aesop's tales on morality wouldn't you know that those talking animals were not intended literally.
