A couple notes: My mom made 13 year old me watch this in a theater with her. I still don't know why. *ding* It takes over 23 hours to go from Bogota to Cartagena by bus. There's no way our heroine would do that on any bus, let alone a "chicken bus". *ding* Romance novels, by definition, end with the couple together. So yes, anyone who ever read a romance novel knows how it ends. That's usually the point. *ding*

For some reason I miss the long bus rides in South America. I did Cartagena to Medellin in 2007 and Santa Marta to Cali in 2010. They definitely weren’t chicken busses though. I’ve done my fair share of those too, but never so long. That said I have no idea what the best quality busses would have been like in 1984 anyway. I know that a lot of the overland road routes I got to benefit from were relatively newer anyway (post 1984, at least)

When I was a kid (born in 85) and watched these films and then later watched them fight bitterly in The War of The Roses, I didn’t understand that it wasn’t the same people. It hadn’t clicked for me yet that actors and characters were different. I was so upset about how poorly their marriage turned out.

You missed the part that has haunted me since I first saw it in 1984. You mentioned how unnecessary towing the boat into Manhattan was, but the final scene of it being towed down the street has always made me angry because the mast is still up and there is no way it should fit down that street.

My parents took me with them to watch this in the theater because what two-year-old doesn't love romantic action comedies. Apparently I was fine until the guy's hand got bitten off and at that part started shrieking "he ate it! HE ATE IT!" and had to be taken outside. It didn't so much give me a fear of crocodiles as a highly unrealistic concept of how large gemstones are likely to be.

Fun fact: the studio heads watched this film and though it was shit. Robert Zemeckis was supposed to direct Cocoon but was fired before Romancing the Store was even released. Romancing the Stone was a sleeper hit. Because of this films success Zemeckis was able to convince Universal to make Back to the Future. No Romancing the Stone. No Back to the Future.

The nostalgia is strong with this one for us 35+ year olds! I watched this in 2019 probably close to 20yrs since the last time I had seen it but it was one of the first VHS we owned back in the 80s when a vhs cost over $80 in today's money so we must've watched over 2 dozen times before I turned 7. Watching it again as a 30+ adult while comparing it to my childhood memories I was amused at how little 4 or 5yo me understood what was happening in the film not to mention seeing first hand how much the sexual politics have changed since 1984.

Well I’ve been to Cartagena (as have tons of other tourists) and another sin is that Castillo de San Filipe is in walkable distance from downtown Cartagena. Also it’s by no means a jungle city

No sin needed for Jack's bird loss because he didn't leave them there - they all escaped in the crash because their cages broke or the people on the bus are shown carrying them away. However, you should have sinned the fact that the map is sometimes paper and sometimes totally laminated and not just that casual mention near the end since it flips back and forth the entire film. I love this movie, but that always drove me bonkers. 🤣

Me and a buddy saw the sequel Jewel of the Nile in the theater, still really good and fun but not the same as the first one. It's been at least 30 years since I have seen this. The wooden board on the bus: on one side it says "Cartagena", but when it was switched to the other side, it said "Castillo de San Felipe", which is actually a tourist attraction IN CARTAGENA. Very near its downtown. Not a destination in the middle of the jungle.

1:24: Sorry, Jeremy; gotta sin a sin: Whereas "wherefore" means "why," and not "where," and Whereas her cat is named "Romeo," and Whereas she clearly wants to know the location of said cat, and Whereas "Wherefore" and "where" have a similar syllable, and Whereas "Wherefore art thou Romeo?" is a famous line, Therefore it is clear that Joan Wilder was making a legitimate pun as she asketh the cat to reveal his location. To quote the line as the Shakespearean Author penned it would result in a line having nothing to do with her asking where her cat is!

As a child of the 80’s watching this in the theater, I knew Joan was a rich author who lived alone with her cat. She didn’t have any tissues because she was busy writing her novel. I liked that she didn’t have a husband & kids, like my mom! Haha

This is way better than Captain Marvel or The Farce Awakens. The female protagonist _actually_ goes through the Hero's Journey. She even makes mistakes and loses a little, before learning, growing and becoming the hero.
