The Golden Compass was definitely a movie that happened. You didn't imagine that. It was a thing. And it went away. Probably because they spent the entire first movie spraying exposition all over the screen. Here are the sins.

Daemons basically represent your core personality trait personified as an animal, for example those who are loyal get dogs, those who are clever have snakes, those who are wise get owls, and so on... When a person is young their daemons can change depending on how they are at that moment it's only after the person becomes an adult their daemons remain in one form for the rest of their lives. That's how I understand what daemons are, they are a person's soul in this world, and the animal form is just representative of the person's personality.

Although daemons don’t rely on vague stereotypes like snakes being clever and owls being wise (neither of those real animals are like that) and are more determined on their real counterparts behaviour. If you really had a clever person their demon would be a crow or a parrot. Because those animals are actually intelligent, snakes not so much.

Honestly, the greatest worst thing about this movie is how it intentionally cut the book's ending so it could end on a happy note. Cause the books goes ball-to-the-wall crazy Empire Strikes Back with its ending. In the book, like, a chapter after where the movie ends, Azriel kills/daemon cuts Lyra's friend to tear open an inter-dimensional portal, Coulter is there for some reason (it's been literally about a decade since I last read the book; details escape me), and while Lyra is freaking out disbelieving that her friend is dead, cradling his corpse, they're making out like a porno is about to start. Then Azriel goes through the portal with the intent of destroying the source of Dust (don't remember why), and Lyra resolves roughly "Fuck all these adults, what the hell do they know about anything?!" and follows him.

I mean... kinda sorta, but also not really. Hardcore makeouts are at the least definitely had by Lyra and the other protagonist (whose name I can't remember or be arsed to look up) in the last book, and the whole Eve Born Again thing Lyra eventually has going on over the course of the series certainly implies sex to me in that scene with my older perspective, but nothing is ever explicitly stated in the book itself.

There was a scene near the end of the last book where they disappear off-screen (page?) for a bit, and something happens between them that fixes Dust, and some people think they had sex, but Phillip Pullman has refused to confirm or deny. I'm of the opinion that it doesn't matter, because sex is fine, but it's not the be-all-end-all of things.

I know The Books Dont Matter, the daemon questions are pretty easily resolved in the books and they’re actually really cool. So a daemons form related to a persons innermost self. If you’re homely and friendly, you might have a dog. If you’re wild and independent, you might be a weasel (like Lyras daemon in the books). Daemons can talk, but only the person they’re connected to can understand them, to other people they sound like animal noises. When two people have sex, daemons act out something equally intimate but non-sexual, like play-fighting, cuddling, or grooming each other. In the books, the universe has a folktale of a fisherman whose daemon becomes a dolphin, and he has to spend the rest of his life on a boat. When you touch someone else’s daemon, it’s not that they feel the pain on the physical equivalent of their own bodies, but rather an overwhelming sense of violation and discomfort in their very soul. I love these books so yeah haha
@Gladissims

That's not true. Deamons can talk to other people. It doesn't happen too often, but they definitely do it on several occasions in the books...

Also, there are animals that aren't Daemons, again explained in the books. In Northern Lights (The Golden Compass), Iorek kills and eats a seal, rubbing the fat on his armour, and in The Secret Commonwealth, it says this, in regards to Pantalaimon "No-one who saw him would think for a moment he was a pine marten, he looked like a pine marten in every respect, but he was a Daemon. It was very hard to say where the difference lay, but any human being in Lyra's world would have known it at once, as surely as the smell of coffee, or the colour red." Daemons can talk to eachother, and to other humans. Humans and Daemons feel eachother's pain (see when Mrs Coulter's monkey attacked Pan), though a person touching someone else's Daemon is more along the lines of a violation, This again, is explained in the books (La Belle Sauvage), where it's described as an innate instinct from birth. Honestly, it's a shame that the movie wasn't able to delve further into the mythology of Daemons. Also, to answer the question at 6:44, the symbol meanings are more metaphorical (for example, the apple represents knowledge and sin), so... from looking at the symbol meanings available online, I'd say you'd need the Wild man (represents lust), The Apple (Sin, as in the sin of Wrath from the seven deadly sins), and the Walled Garden for nature.

@@noneofyoubusiness4895 The alludings made in this movie are far closer to Harry Potter in terms of scenery and general feel than just the fact that they both had two of the same fantasy creatures in it. Like others have stated in the comments here; the books in this series don't resemble Harry Potter, but the movie does. Because it was a popular genre at the time they probably just went with the cinematic style that they knew worked. It doesn't mean any of the author's ripped each other off.

Her dad almost killed her instead because he needed to take someone's life to travel across dimensions... he was going to but then when he saw her friend was with her decided to murder him instead to save himself the guilt of getting his hands messy killing his daughter. Reading the book doesn't make the movie seem better, it just makes it seem worse. The story is really badly explained, and not even well acted, despite all the big names. A few characters got merged together in ways that don't make sense for the story, and they removed some important character deaths: Tony Makarios got merged with Billy Costa, and he doesn't die, which introduced a couple of sins and removes the important point that intercision is nearly always fatal. The Dark Materials trilogy is a very weird and convoluted story though. They start travelling between parallel universes, there's a load of stuff going on with angels and demons, they have a big war, some people die, everyone goes to the afterlife to get the dead people back, morally ambiguous monsters turn out not to be so bad, god dies, etc. Honestly I wonder if it really works as a film at all. By the way, "gobblers separating demons from kids" isn't a subplot, it's actually the main plot of the story. It's the thing that drives the rest of the series. For some reason the film ends before the end of the book.
@Arenuphis
@Arenuphis 5 жыл бұрын
well tbh the main plot is "lyra goes wherever the plot tells her, aka acting out destiny, like 5 wars going on in the backround, also she ends up in them sometimes" with lots of interesting stuff strewn on and around it to make it seem less noticeable it's rather "gobblers are kidnapping" that is central to that part of the movie there weren't any demons tho, right? just fallen angels also who do you mean with morally ambiguous monsters? mrs. coulter&lord asrial? important note, I loved the books, but yes, it's really weird and convoluted sometimes

My rule of thumb is, if the book is based on the movie, read the book first, if the movie is based on the book, watch the movie first. In other words read (or watch) the derivative work first. This doesn't always hold true, but over the years it has done better than 50-50. I first started coming up with this rule of thumb when I watched the Born Identity. Everyone was going on and on about how great the movie was, and all I could think about was how disappointing it was when compared to the book. On the other hand, I think reading the movie based books first, made the first Transformers movie better because it added to the story.

Film is about the visuals - can you show me something happening rather than having a character lecture me?

I always had a soft spot for this film. The books were so fantastic and the casting and art direction/special effects were brilliant, but the script didn't do the book justice. If it had, I can't even imagine how amazing the rest of the books would have been while being brought to life! But I kind of understand why the film was so lacking though. All three or four books are extremely long and detailed. About 50% of the second book alone would have to be cut for an adaptation. They would have been the children's films the world needs.

I know the books aren't supposed to matter here but there's something that I really need to get off my chest: *THE ALETHIOMETER IS NOT A GOLDEN COMPASS!!!* It's golden and kinda looks like a navigational compass but in no way is it a compass and is never called a compass. An alethiometer is, simply put, a truth telling device. The name "The Golden Compass" is a reference to John Milton's poem Paradise Lost and refers to the kind of compass that helps you draw circles, not the kind that tells direction and vaguely looks like an alethiometer. The fact that the movie doesn't realize this shows that it doesn't get the book and is the first sign that it got it wrong.

If that were the case, you'd see as many different types of daemons as there are people. And since children's daemons are shown to have some control over what they turn into, you'd think they'd explore every possible form available to them, including the really big ones. But in the HDM world (as presented to us) you don’t see anything bigger than a snow leopard. Why? Having an elephant at your command would be too useful not to exploit in any situation that required it. A few dozen kids with elephant daemons, for instance, would would make light work of the Tartar guards at Bolvangar.

Please allow me a moment to nerd out: The golden snitches in HP (see Harry Potter and the Philosophers' Stone 1997) came out well after the Golden Compass (see His Dark Materials 1995). Same goes for a lot of the other plot devices, characters and objects that you saw similarities to in the other (later) works of fiction and animation that you'd mentioned. Narnia's message about religion is "Christianity is good" while this book's was the exact opposite. Therefore, a more accurate representation of the Narnia books is possible with a few passionate Christian filmmakers but an accurate representation of this book series is unlikely because at some level of production, executives will say "There's no way we can market this in a 75% Christian nation" and meddle with it. The executives don't care about the message, generally, but _do_ care about alienating too big a sector of the audience. Shame though; this story doesn't exactly need any help to make itself come across poorly thought out and tactless.

The biggest sin of this movie, in my opinion, is that they tried to water down the anti-religion theme of the book, removing a lot of very important aspects of the story and making a lot of the background and motivations vague, resulting in a lousy movie, yet it was still had enough anti-religion, as well as just it's existence from it's source material, that the religious establishment hated it and campaigned against it. Result was that it didn't make either the religious or the secular (especially those who have read the book) audiences happy. Thus it bombed at the box office, and the intended sequels were never made - had they made the sequels it probably would have all fit together into a better context, resolving the biggest complaint this guy had that the story wasn't resolved - it needed the sequels for any of it to make any sense. Had they not tried to appease the religious people, which would be impossible given the source material, the movie would have turned out decent. If you can't make everyone happy, at least make some people - the people who would ever want this movie period - happy. Also, really wish they'd kept the original ending, the last two chapters of the book rather than this vague "off into the sunset" ending, but I guess they just would have added that to the next movie had it been made.

"Only one that can read it." Is a fault the movie did. She is not the only one who can read it. She just so happened to have one and figured it out. Turns out when you're young you can figure things out faster then those who are older. If the Church didn't destroy them all and banned the research probably MANY people would be able to read it... and she could teach others how to do so. BTW it's easier to reach before puberty apparently as it gets harder to make it work later on. 1:33 about the pain stuff. Yes and basically yes. Daemons are basically their souls outside their bodies. If the second movie was made, like it was originally planned, this would have been understood. Or if they explained it better in the first movie I guess. Also no two toilets. Your soul doesn't need to eat or use the bathroom... but they could if they wanted to. But they don't need to as the daemon's body isn't a true body. And as for them doing the nasty... the two daemons are probably "petting" each other unless they don't want to connect on a "spiritual" level then probably not. /shrugs 2:42 Yes. Real animals can exist. Apparently you can look at a daemon who is separated from its human and see a weird sentience about it. But it's confusing since there is an invisible tie between the two that can cause real pain when they venture too far apart. Which is why witch's daemons are so special and weird to meet. If you see a real animal you instantly go... well that's just an animal. But if you see a daemon you take a double glance at it and wonder where the human is. 3:52 "Little thing" is actually a hint for later. She's basically black mailing/guilt tripping the headmaster into letting her spend time with the girl. 3:58 It's soul touching. While it's taboo for a person to touch another person's daemon there is no problem if a person touches another person and a daemon touches another daemon. It is also a way to coerce certain situations. If Lyra was "okay" with the woman and that was it she probably wouldn't feel like she had a connection. So she would fully trust her. But if their daemons are getting along it'll force her to feel more at ease... even if her daemon is uncomfortable with the action. 4:53 Yes. The typical house servant's daemon is a dog. Just a common mixed breed dog actually. Dogs, cats, and rats are THE most common "poor folks" daemon in their world. Lyra takes notice of this but doesn't question it. That doesn't mean if your daemon settles as a dog you HAVE to be a house servant. Instead it just means you typically are a follower type person. You are most comfortable taking orders from someone, can be very loyal, and work well with others or by yourself. 5:10 The headmaster doesn't know how to work it. If I remember right he had a dream to give it to her. 7:52 Yes. Aaaand yes. Ioric is literally stuck in that village because they stole his soul. He has to get it back before he can leave. 11:30 They're trying to separate kids from their souls. In doing so they think it will rid them of the connection of dust.... which is the round about saying of "original sin". That way their daemons don't settle on a form ( puberty ) and they are free to be whatever and all that nonsense. What actually happens is you get soulless zombies. Sure they're alive but they have no personality and are easy to control. 12:34 Because letting him go they hoped he would die out there. But really it's also because they don't want to admit Dust is really a thing. If they can get people to be quiet about the truth about something... that Dust is needed... sin is needed... then how will they control the masses? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Spoilers: She finds her dad and he kills her best friend as a sacrifice to get to the other side because he didn't want to kill his child... which is what he thought he had to do. Lyra now confused why her dad did that.. and very angry about it... follows him to the other side. Our world... well actually a in between world AND our world. There she meets a boy who murdered a guy so his mother would be safe. Nazi church blah blah blah story stuff... angels... a subtle knife... dimension traveling! Lyra grows up... puberty! World saved! Sorta....

Kaitren No, her ability to read the alethiometer isn't really "magic". It's kind of an innate ability she has at first, I think she's a bit special in that regard but it's true that she's not the only one who can read it. Throughout the series, she loses her ability to read the alethiometer as she matures and goes through puberty and grows out of childhood- she doesn't lose the power at the end because of some mission being complete, she loses it gradually as she grows up and it gets harder and harder for her to read it. Actually learning how to read it after she lost her ability is supposedly very difficult, it requires a lot of studying of the symbols and their different levels of meanings (which was something she was just able to get intuitively as a child, but as an adult she has to actually learn and memorize them) so that's also a reason not many people can read the alethiometer.

I think I understand daemons. When a child, your daemon is able to shape shift into different types of animals. When an adult, the daemon will remain as an animal. So I guess that elephant daemons won’t be a problem because by the time someone had reached adulthood the daemon would be more suitable. Also I think what species a daemon is does depend on personality and profession. But they have time to transform into what will represent the humans lifestyle because they are able to change species.

@crystalllite 6 жыл бұрын
From what I remember from the book, daemons settle into a final form when a person supposedly reaches maturity. (spoilers ahead!!) In the third book (I think), Lyra and Will touch each other's daemons (which is usually taboo in society) and their daemons settle then, and the book says something about how your daemon settles when touched for the first time by a lover? Because it signifies the shift away from childhood and the loss of innocence or something like that. (I could have remembered wrong though, it's been a while.)
@crystalllite
@crystalllite 6 жыл бұрын
They don't really "transform" to represent the human's lifestyle, the book calls it "settling" because they don't really "choose" what they become, they just kind of end up in a form that feels right and once that happens they can't change anymore, nor do they want to. So yes, a daemon will match the person's lifestyle and personality (for example, all witches' daemons are birds, because flying is important to a witch) but they don't really consciously "choose" a form to settle into.

Somewhere I read the daemons settle into the shape they most feel comfortable with (and of course that fits the personality of the human) so I think that's something in consideration. Settling into an elephant wouldn't be so convenient, nor comfortable.
@forestgrump4723
@forestgrump4723 6 жыл бұрын
I disagree, for someone who likes wide open spaces an elephant could be a very comfortable form for their Daemon. They would just have a hard time traveling to heavily populated areas which would be fine because they don't really want to anyway.

The bears, right? It actually floored me that they put that scene into a PG book. Like, how is that level of gore not at least one level higher? The entire book/movie is kinda dark, too, which I applaud. Mature themes in YA is what we need. I'm trying to think of gory / gross / violent moments in Harry Potter, but I mostly come up with stuff that is funny. They kill each other with flashes of light from little wooden sticks, they don't blast each other's jaws from their faces with explosions. Ice bear gotta ice bear, I guess?

I'm sure most people watching this, or si mk liar movies, did not even know there was a book.
@mindscapejem
@mindscapejem 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not arguing the fact that the movie is or isn't sinful. All I'm just saying is that the answers do exist, and unfortunately most of them are yes. 1. Yes, if you harm a Daemon the daemon's master is also hurt. If you kill a daemon, the daemon's master dies. It's not one-to-one though. 2. Yes, there are plenty of animals that exist in the books that aren't just daemons, such as birds and fish. Also, people are aware if an animal is an animal or a daemon because, for the most part, there is a maximum distance a daemon can be separated from a human. (Barring some Gobbler chicanery or some other unfortunate incident.) 3. Masters are not always aware of what a daemon is doing, but the daemons are typically aware of what their master are doing. The daemon is kind of like an extension of the master. The english speaking daemons are based on the intelligence and compatibility with their master as well as a matter of trust. Mrs. Coulter's monkey can speak English, but chooses not to unless it's absolutely necessary. She uses this to her advantage a few times across all three books. Daemons are limited in terms of size and capability of the master, as a general rule, however, daemons are not able to be larger than their master. The type of animal the daemon becomes is determined around puberty and will typically be an animal that is the most useful to and a reflection of the master. 4. Yes, servant class people will almost always have dogs. Explorers may have owls or rabbits, hunters may have wolves or huskies and seafaring people may end up with dolphins or seagulls. They are a reflection of yourself and will not change after they have "set" into a position, typically around puberty.

I read these books, plot really didn't become clear until book 2 when the other universes came into play. Very much had a unique wavelength that the movie didn't capture. Was good, detailed storytelling for about 3/4 the way, 3 books or was it 4 ? then as the story wound down it did get dark and to the personal level complete with a travel in and out of a hellish region which was longish and followed just the main character for AWHILE. The last book definitely lost all sense of enjoyable childish adventure, even though you always knew some serious concepts were involved. An interesting world was all laid out ready for an epic conclusion, but then it just had an ending. It was a uniquely odd story that came at you from a different angle and I remember a feeling than you were never filled in on motives and meanings, the ah ha moment when the bad guy is clearly the bad guy and taken care of never really came. The plot and characters didn't fall apart or anything....just definitely different. Not an easy one to abbreviate into film and the production didn't quite overcome that. Somehow the golden locket universe didn't get expressed in the movie, felt reminded of similar characters and other movies more than the world in the book.
@treeckogreen8577

That is a unique aspect that I love about the series, it just kind of ends. The characters make a couple crucial decisions but to no real climax, just an end where life goes back to the mundane. Its kind of like LotR in that to distill it down to a 2 hour movie is impossible (and even LotR went well over 2 hours per film and they cut it down with a butchers knife)

The books were my favourites, growing up, but oh boy do I loathe this movie. They got absolutely everything wrong right from the beginning narration: Tone, designs, story, names, voices, even Mrs. Coulters hair! Still, this movie was a first for me, back then in high-school - the first time I was certain I could have written a better script than a professional script-writer. The bar here is pretty low. By the way, the reason why the Magisterium feels so analogous to the catholic church is that it literally IS the catholic church (with a slightly different history, parallel world and all that). The makers of this travesty were just too spineless to keep that explanation in. F§%K this movie.
