I don’t know how good live transcripts it didn’t seem to be at the top notch of its game when I was using it on iOS 17, then again, the person was talking to was cutting out and not speaking very clear, but the text to speech recognition on the keyboard been using a lot and it’s been working really well. And this is now a fact with iOS18 😃. I installed iOS 18 public beta 6 the other day, and I was delighted to find built-in transcribing. Quick as f. Quite good also. NB so far device language need to be English for this to work

I have used this app for years. Two very big things missing from this with Apple is: not being able to start this with your AirPods on a locked device. You can press the button on your AirPod for Siri to start and tell her to use the app, but then you need to unlock your phone first. That’s a massive shortcoming when you drive and want to stay eyes on the road. Second is that you can’t easily take any recording and instead of sending or copying it, have it transferred to text. That way it would be super easy to get from spoken word to text using the one same app. I would pay for those features when integrated like that.

this is April 2024. They’ve now added Irecord and Imerge. both of these are incredible assets and yes, I knew most of what you talked about but I hadn’t known anything about the editing

Also, the Voice Memos app is available on iMac and MacBook. I was airdropping recordings to my computer then drag-and-drop the file into my video project. But I can just open Voice Memos on my computer, edit if needed, and drag-and-drop directly into my video project.

I’d love to see a video on Reminders, but not only the basic features, but the integration with other apps and capabilities like Calendar, Maps, Notes and Siri, etc. Also, a video on using Shortcuts to produce a CVS file to use with numbers maybe even showing how to pull data from your Health Data.

I use the voice memos apps to record my commentary when making videos. Could I use more powerful audio apps to record my voice for my videos? Yeah I could. But they're also a lot more complicated to use, and the voice memos apps gets the job done very easily which is really convenient for me

I use it frequently - not directly but to create Notes and Reminders. When creating a new note I use the litle microphone lower right - it actually transcribes my note even when speaking Danish ! Cool.

That voice memo is pretty powerful!! Sit on your bed put your iPhone on the pillow and the guitar on your lap,play and sing play back the recording.!

Recordings of voice or music via this are amazing...nigh-on perfect...You can also actually name the recordings in editing without the need for location....

The voice memo app has come so far! I used it when I first got my iPhone 4 and it did ok with the mic but it low quality and lacking. Much better now. Hopefully they will continue to improve it.

I’ve figured out how to ask Siri to START a voice memo but not how to STOP the recording. I want to use the app hands free. Was hoping this was included in your video. I’m having a difficult time finding a tutorial for using voice memos hands free. I’ll just have to play around with it some more.

Outstanding video, so apologies if my question was already covered and I just didn’t grasp it. Is there a way to cut a section out of the middle of an audio recording and have the two sections on either side then come together to create a new, shortened video? Similar to video editing where you can take a video clip, cutting out of middle portion and joining the two remaining sections together to create a new clip. AKA, a ‘ripple delete’. I thought that’s where you might go next after you showed how to record/replace over a previously recorded section. Thanks!

Awesome! It’s not at all evident that there are more features beyond stop and start on this app. I want to use this to record a meditation from a book and didn’t want pauses and page turning sounds. I’m awaiting cables from Amazon so I can record with my Rode Go microphone. As far as other unused Apple apps - I use the Health and Fitness apps, which I ignored for years, but now I use daily.

Thank you for this helpful video. I knew most of the features, I used to use it most days, in and out of the office, at lectures, workshops, ... until Apple took it out of iTunes. That is, when I synchronise the iPhone with the Mac, I don't know where it goes, so I stopped using it. I should call Apple, but if anyone can help, much appreciated.

I talked to Apple, who said that the TIME display at the top when you're in Edit Recording and playing the recording was in older iphone iOss than my version 17. UPDATE: I figured it out: At least in my ios 17.5.1: After I FIRST RECORD a recording, the TIME (timestamp) of the recording, such as "7:45 PM", appears under the recording filename. BUT IT DISAPPEARS sometime between that day and the next day! I luckily had apparently SEEN that time info and then typed it into the filename, which luckily remains for posterity! Ridiculous that the info disappears, at least in ios 17.5.1.

I was hoping you might address if there was a way to import a prerecorded MP3 into the voice memos. Like say I have a clip of my niece singing and I'd like to somehow load it into voice memos to keep it handy there to listen to. Is that a possibility? Or would maybe notes be better for this? I want to keep it separate from my iphone video/photos app, and I don't want to keep it on a webpage or in an email.

Its possible you can share and save it to voice memos. If you want to organize audios in folders, its better using apples files app. I use both of those apps together which really do a lot.

Thank you for this video. Very informative. :) I was looking for something that wasn't included and figured it out. I permanently deleted a VM that I wanted back on my phone and so I emailed the backup from my computer, downloaded it onto my phone. The downloaded file went into my iphone downloads folder. Went there and then clicked on the audio file and it opened into another screen. There I was able to click the share icon (bottom left) and the VM app was an option to share to. Et voila! It copied it back into my VM app. :D

I understand some video editors who make these videos for 9to5mac AppleInsider MacRumors etc use Final Cut Pro Adobe Premier or Da Vinci Resolve BUT “AVERAGE” users SHOULD get SOME iMovie related videos I noticed that in my Files app on my iPhone and iPad DOES NOT DISPLAY VIDEO FILES IN FOLDERS WITH the iMovie icon on the folder and when I try to SAVE an iMovie file to iCloud Drive the file DOES NOT EXACTLY MOVE BETWEEN DEVICES

My name is Diane, and I am blind. I use the iPhone Screen Reader. It is called Voiceover. To turn it on, go to settings, scrol down till you get to accessableity. Then choose Voiceover. Remember, when using Voiceover, you hear the name of the item you want. And then you 1 finger double tap the screen. I hope this helps. If not look for video's on how to use Voiceover on your iPhone or iPad.

Fernando, Thanks for doing this video. I am trying to record a song that I'm playing on my piano. I do know how to trim from the beginning and at the end. However, I once tried to delete in the middle and it deleted all of the beginning. Is it possible to delete part in the middle but keep the beginning and ending. Unfortunately, that time I lost some of a recording of what my mom was saying. She just recently passed away so it was a horrible mistake. I don't think there is a way to get it back. It seems like I could have retrieved it if I had deleted all of it. Any thoughts on that? Now I know to save an extra copy of my recording before editing an important file. Thank you again. Carolyn

How did you get the top of your playing recording to show the Date and Start Time of the recording rather than the total play time count I’m suddenly seeing? I saw the date and time just a day or two somehow, somewhere! Going into Exit Recording didn’t help, though maybe I didn’t do exactly the right combo of steps such as maybe it needing to be Playing to see the start date and time at the top of the display. Crazy-making!

You can share the voice memo to the files app or via email or messages. It sends a m4a file you can then export/attach wherever.
