They seem unutilized as mere bodyguards of selected imperial officers. Their capabilities are pronounced in aggression as well as stealth, so why have them hanging at the back with the officers, surely they wouldn't be needing much distortion or scramblers at that point since the situation is already upon them.

No, I think they all have pauldrons but you can only see the markings through Death Trooper helmets. So only they can see each others ranks. It just looks blank to the naked eye
