I don't know. Before the prequels came out, Luke was clearly the hero. Then the prequels came, and suddenly Vader is supposed to be the hero. Luke's victory was specifically in 'not' killing Vader, which, through the domino effect, ended the rule of the Sith. But apparently, if he'd killed Vader and Palpatine, he'd be the chosen one. Or if Vader hadn't killed Palpatine, then Lando and Wedge would be the chosen ones. Who killed them isn't as meaningful as Luke's contribution to the balance of the force, passing the test that his father had failed, that had enabled the imbalance in the first place. In short, I disagree with Lucas's reasoning.

The Emperor thought that the living force would allow him to do that? I mean really :/
