I'm hoping I can do as great today (more mocks, sigh), as this video has been super helpful for me :) I can't thank you enough!!

Please could you look through and mark this, it's from the June 2018 Language Paper 1 Question 5, asking you to describe an old man: Blood dragged through his battered brain as he lay there. These were his final hours. Life had flown through him but now it was soaring above him, never to come back again. Nurses rushed to and fro, fetching chemicals as though his life depended on it. Of course it didn’t though. All 80 years amounted to nothing, as old age maliciously ruled over him, seizing all that it could capture, leaving everything to ruins. His skin had seen many battles, his eyes had roved the world, his hands had shot too many to tell. There were many things that he regretted in life: his merciless actions that attacked him from all corners; his affection and care which he had rarely showed, for it evaded his mind; enemies on the battlefield haunted his every move, taking revenge for what he did, for how he did it. But what could he do? His mind was mere wrinkles on his brain, his knowledge had belittled him so that it forced him on this bed, which he lay upon, waiting for his time. He knew all too well that death was soon to greet him. He wondered if they’d have a chat before he would be sent underground, to rot for a thousand years. How had his life come to this? The ladies of the late-fifties used to see him as a hero, returning from his treacherous journey, and bringing back unimaginable riches. He thought he had fought hard and valiantly, a knight who’d saved his brother from death, and who killed cold-blooded murderers that had no soul. He thought wrong. All he was was a murderer who had no mercy and annihilated the enemy, only to go and celebrate their deaths. He was no hero, he was far from it. Those who he killed would now be jeering at him, celebrating his soon-to-come death. He was now fighting a new battle, a losing battle, against the omnipotent cancer. It had taken all that he’d loved and it had moved onto its next target. Death was inevitable. He exhaled a long, hard sigh, and breathed no more.

Thanks for this vid sir :) Could you mark this? The question had an old man however I used the narrative but based it on the picture as a basis 'Write a story about a time things turned out unexpectedly' The man had regret plastered all over his furrowed face. Lips as thin as paper, a snow blizzard for a beard. His eyes, drowned in a devastating, pitiful happiness. The sticks once supporting him had lost respect to their beholder; now just limbs. The stick-thin limbs shook at every miniature move. His legs could have given any runner the time of day, but that was 50 years ago- now they could hardly hold him up. He owned a scruffy, ungroomed beard which seemed to follow him everywhere he went. The spine, a noticeable curve. When this being opened his mouth the only sight to see was the mud grey flesh- gum. This man was in pain, deep pain. That was the man I had seen in the video, who all the students seemed to ridicule. I saw the pain, however. I felt it. The drooly thought of disintegrating into nothing but a body of wrinkly furrows and the idea of my legs disrespecting me, hardly able to hold me up, made my bones sizzle. I supported my youth, being filled with jubilance and innocence; not a lifeless sap- dead, but still breathing. But really; that couldn’t have happened to me, right? Regret. Filling me top to toe. My lips now thin as paper. Eyelids heavy, hardly holding my hoary face- domineered by the intense regret I never envisioned myself in. My once youthful fingers, the very ones I had when I saw that video. I now had a snow blizzard for a beard. Now lifeless. No identity. A dead man walking. I became the man I feared to become. There was a time my imagination soared, it was a limitless sky high universe. The mind in which I hold today is top-toed filled with mountains and dunes of regret. I enjoyed my youth, perhaps not enough. Maybe I did take it for granted. The happiness I kindled for youth could not be as strong as it is now. Life is unexpected, and after all these years, regret is meaningless. Painfully sweet memories of my youth, however always seem to penetrate my mind. My lips, now paper thin, my beard like a blizzard. I have enjoyed my youth, and I have reminisced. It’s your time now. Cherish it.

Dear Mr Salles. Thank you for all the help you provide. I understand you are very busy and appreciate everything you do. Perhaps, could you mark this question 2 which I wrote. Question: How does the writer use language to present Effia’s difficult childhood? The writer presents Effia’s difficult childhood through the baby that was ‘born of fire’, whereby the image of ‘fire’ symbolises destruction and an object that can easily spread, conveying how her ‘fire’ nature is representative of her destructive nature as a child who spreads ‘sharp’ pains and ‘fear’. This contrasts to the image of ‘love’ where social expectations suggest that love must be felt, however it is as if Effia brought devastation when she was born, as child like ‘love’ was removed. Perhaps the ‘nights fire’ defines Effia as a child of desolation, and thus her childhood has made up the fire she was born into. This is reinforced by the ‘sharp guns’, where was her teeth care metaphorically ‘guns’ perhaps her physicality and mentality is defined by violence and ‘flesh’; her nature provides her with a traumatic childhood. Therefore, the authors is to outline how Effia being born into destruction influenced her life; providing her with a difficult childhood. This is only one paragraph. Sorry for no extract

Just got out of the exam and it was easy. It's just that you had to think hard for the extra, which took time. However the last question was easy as I wrote 4 pages and took your advice, Mr Salles, of using extended metaphors. I described the bazaar photo as a galaxy/universe with descriptions of the salespeople as stars and their products in sale as products of binary fission. The people buying from them, I described as comets on an elliptical orbit through this galaxy and shoppers who didn't have a clue as what to buy as meteorite. I used the smell of meat in the bazaar as a nebula and the shops/"stars" closing down, ending the star's sequence to form black holes, sucking in all the meteorites, as the metaphorical stars reached the end of its life.

To be honest, I think that when planning, it's actuly easier to just write a detailed topic sentence per paragraph, and then just expand on the ideas exponentially. This means you wouldn't be struggling to find ideas to talk about for both paper 1 and 2 as the language needed will come to you as you write.

I have just finished practicing for question 5 and wanted your opinion if possible. I was doing the question ‘write a story with the title discovery’ and was using your technique of looking at the news. I found a story entitled ‘five bodies found in the hunt for eight missing climbers in the Himalayas’ For my story, I wrote in third person and described the characters climbing the mountains, slowly running out of supplies and each one dropping one by one. The character I had named dropping last but not obviously dying (I ended with - His eyes fell shut.) Then I put * * * and started a new paragraph where a women worked in a newsroom and she caught sight of a new article which was entitled : Five bodies discovered in the hunt for eight missing climbers in the Himalayas. Would this be ok for a story entitled discovery as the main part isn’t about discovery but rather I keep that until the end? Thanks so much for all your resources. It’s made me feel much more prepared for the exam tomorrow!! PS i also included Crisis at the start as the character is unsure if he can make it to the peak and also included weather description as he pictured the view from the top!! Thanks very much again

hi mr salles, i have my exam in three days and i was wondering, when you say talk about the beginning and ending for question 3, do you talk about them together and the joint effect on the reader or as two seperate bodies of text. also should you only talk about them both if a cyclical structure is involved?

do you not feel the narrative is less restrictive because you can describe and tell the plot if you get bored of describing

ls rule of 3 a structural or language device?

If you look at the words in it, it's language. However, if you are looking at how it builds tension or something- it is structure.

mr salles, your vids are amazing! I was wondering if you could create a little 20 word word-bank for us. This would contain not very common, yet amazing, adjectives that if you, as an English Teacher, read yourself, you’d be impressed with! I know you say to fit words with gut feeling, but surely there is no harm learning new adjectives? Hopefully you have the time to do this, or if not, thank you for your extremely helpful videos nonetheless!

is it not easier to do the narrative and base it on the photo if you're not good at describing because you can do only a bit of describing and a bit of the plot instead of wholly describing the photo for the description question?
