Hi I came across your channel and I have a shubunkin and it’s beautiful, but I was wondering if you have a video on the best tank environment/size or any other advice as I’m not an expert or very knowledgeable about tank fish but I’ve kept my tank for a few years and I’ve done pretty good so far but I’d like to improve their environment
@stubbsaquatics6080Ай бұрын
Hi Laura. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I try to keep them in as large of a tank as I can and if possible in a pond. The bigger the better as these fish can grow over a foot in length I keep my biggest in an indoor 300 gallon pond during the winter . In the summer they go into two larger ponds.. I do keep some of my juveniles in a 125 gallon tank. These fish are a social fish and do better in groups of at least three. I do have a lot of fry in smaller tanks but they are in there just for the winter. I would love to see your shubunkin goldfish. I have watched Sandra's and Jackson's video, oh four or five, maybe six times. And gosh guy, this is one of the top videos out there. Just the research was enough to make it good. However, you people made it excellent. Thank you. Now a question; I have always looked at my shubunkins, and wondered what they really are, what type? They aren't Londons nor do they seem to be Bristols, although that is what I call them. Isn't there a third type?
@stubbsaquatics60802 жыл бұрын
Thanks so very much Roland for your very kind words and your support. Those words mean the world to me. Some of my other shubunkin videos might be helpful. Bristol as you know have a rounded tail with a strong blue in their colouring where the London has more of a forked tail. There is no official that I know of but over here in Canada most of our fish come from America as in the USA. They tend to have more of a sarasa tail which is much longer with a forked tail My Shubunkin have very long tailed. I purchased some a long time ago and bred them.. I did not keep the parents and kept breeding them until I have more of the patterns and fins that I like. My last shubunkin video demonstrates that a bit more. I hope that answered your questions. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me. Stubbs Aka Chris

Great video and some amazing looking shubunkins. The tails and fins are immaculate without tears or fraying which can be difficult to obtain in long finned varieties. Thank you to your wife for calling them what they are "shubunkin goldfish". I've heard so many people tell me they are not goldfish but rather just subunkins. Oh well, each to their own. 👍🏻 👍🏻 👍🏻

First time commenter here, and love your channel. I began a journey last year with an outside pond. put a few small koi and some goldfish, including two shubunkin. Turned out that they were males, and I now have some babies approaching 3" long. Last week, the female comet who was solid white that I believe was the mother to them turned up with scales missing and a fungus on both sides. I think it was from breeding behavior. She has now died, but one white baby is now being harassed to the point we had to remove it from the pond. I have a couple of questions I hope you can help with. 1) Why would they be trying to breed now, in late August? The water temp is mid 80's so they should not be chasing. 2) What is the ratio of males to females in a spawn? It seems like I have 90% or more in the pond are males, as I have only witnessed two of them being chased this year. The babies from this year's spawn are a mixture of common goldfish, dull brown and greenish ones, and calico/shubunkin ones. Will the dull ones change color or are they are what they are? I will be removing them in any case as I do not want them breeding, but the behavior of the others towards the young white one gives me concerns. They were lifting her completely out of the water at times and she (I assume it is a she) was exhausted. Thank you.
@stubbsaquatics6080 Жыл бұрын
First of all thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate your kindness. I am sorry about your female dying.. it happens. They are still spawning. Goldfish will spawn throughout the summer if conditions are right. Have you recently had a change of temperature or a rain.. that can bring them back into spawn. If she is in spawn the males will chase her until she is empty of eggs. I generally keep a ratio of about 4-1 in males for spawning. The green, olive brown goldfish will most likely stay that colour. That is their wild / natural colour. Some darker ones with turn orange/ goldfish colour. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me on instagram or by leaving comments Take care

Thank you for such a quick response. They have calmed down today, so no issues ongoing. Would a 3 month old baby goldfish spawn? Seems really fast to me, but I am a newbie to this. It seems like almost every fish I purchased was a male, and if they are chasing the one, then are all the rest of her spawn this year males also? Are most newborn goldfish males, or is there a more equal ratio there? When I began this journey last year, I purchased two Shubunkin (males), and six goldfish (Comets and Common), of which two turned out to be females, the rest males. We added four more older Comets this year, and they all turned out to be males as well. With my white one (Moby) and the other female passing, I am now seeming left with all males. If the new white one (Baby Moby) is a female, the rest will run her ragged. I am going to be removing more of the males but will have to wait to see if some of the other broodmates of Baby Moby are females next year. Once again, thank you for your response. Take care. @@stubbsaquatics6080

Your goldfish may have fin rot or is there other fish that a nipping them. I would isolate, treat with salt bath, or methaline blue. Hopefully the fins might grow back. I would need to see to give you more info

Very strange.. I would take it out and give a salt bath then put it back or in another tank. The salt will help the fish produce a slime coat .

How do you keep your tank free from algae with having live plants? We do frequent changes and usually within a week or two it's all covered again 😵💫
@stubbsaquatics6080 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. In this tank I don't really have any live plants. I do in a lot of mine though. I have two good filters that help with keeping the nutrients down. I also have a nerite snail and two bristlenose plecos in there that really help. How long do you keep your lights on? How many watts? How many live plants do you have? . Lower the amount of light..

How fast do Shubunkins grow? Is there a growth chart for them? Im trying to figure out how quickly I will need to upgrade (currently I have a lil shubunkin hes about 2inches) . Within a year I will have an out door pond 4ft deep and about 10x20ish ready for him.
@stubbsaquatics60802 жыл бұрын
Their growth depends on a lot of things, genetics, tank or pond size, how many fish, temperature and food. Your Shubunkin will grow quickly in that size pond. What size tank are they in now?

@stubbsaquatics6080 Жыл бұрын
Hi Emer. Thanks for watching. Goldfish are a social fish. So in a large pond with just two they will hide until they feel more comfortable. Start putting in a little bit of food in the same place. They will get accustomed to you being there and relate your presence to food. Are they the only fish in the pond? Sometimes a couple more fish of the same size will help them feel braver. I hope that helps . I would love to see your pond and fish
