Everything You Need to Know About AKC Junior Hunt Tests

The junior stake is a fantastic way for new people to get into the sport of AKC hunt tests. I highly recommend it! Through experience, I caution new folks that the Junior stake is also a stake that I see many dogs learn bad habits. You need to set goals for where you and your dog want to go in this sport. If it's just a Junior title then go for it, if it's to play at the Senior or Master level I highly recommend you focus more on training to those higher levels and avoid running Junior to avoid teaching the dogs bad habits and spending years trying to fix those bad habits in training. Your dog should be ready to run a Senior or Master in training before I would recommend running a Junior, if you follow this principle you and your dog will be very successful in the Junior. This was a great video showcasing what a typical weekend Junior test would be like.

Excellent! In AKC hunt tests, the handler can not talk to the dog in any way (including tapping the leg to pull) during the period starting when the handler signals to the judge that the team is ready until verbally released by the judge to start picking up the mark. In AKC hunt tests, the team can be eliminated by the judges for intimidation of the dog, so do not yell NO! while under judgement.

NO ecollars at the event. Flat buckle collars only. The video was a mock junior hunt test and they were using ecollars since this was a training session.

In a lot of hunt test weekends they normally do a double Junior series because they are shorter test. So it is likely that if you plan properly, you can get two passes in one weekend.

If you don't make the call back, does that mean you don't move up to water retrieves?

Correct. If you are not called back you don't get to move to the next test. This is an AKC hunt test event. Now in HRC hunt test you can run both tests even if you failed the first test but this is not allowed in AKC hunt tests

We discussed that in the video, they will either call your number OR say dog. We have seen both.
