I have a 2001 that me and my dad rebuilt in winter of 2022 that quit workin on me summer of 2023, It always had low compression and I had to replace many electrical components throughout the almost 2 years I've owned it. I still don't know why my ignition switch wiring started melting itself, but the ignition still works and I still get power to the relay, the starter works but the relay is burned out. I'm gonna try replacing my coil and spark plug (coil mounting "fins" are bent and that could contribute to it not starting) and it's common knowledge 2 strokes fowl plugs more often than a 4 stroke. I didn't test the compression because my kickstarter shaft and lever are both stripped, but It always ranged 50 - 80lbs when it was running, but it feels like it could be lower now when I temporarily successfully jerry rigged the kickstarter with what I had, I tried starting it rather than testing compression. lowest I saw the compression get was 30lbs but I had an airleak in my intake boot which is the most overlooked problem that usually fixes these "non-runners". my chain stretched out a good bit but it's due for a chain and maybe sprockets anyway. and after typing all this I also thought about my voltage rectifier could be bad or my stator/pickup. Any advice on getting it running again could be nice, I'll definitely replace the starter relay first though to even attempt turning over the motor. I used to start it with a ratchet strap wrapped around the flywheel, but that stopped working lol. hasn't run in probably 4-5 months

I'm going to look at one of these tomorrow. (Maybe you'll see this by then) Someone asked a question about the oil tank being missing. This seller I talked to said he pre mixes the oil. If the tank is there, can you still pre mix the oil? How will I know whether or not the pre mix it I guess is my question, assuming the tank is there? If there is NO tank, won't there need to be a plate or something blocking where that oil once entered the carb?

You can pre mix even with the tank there, it doesn’t hurt anything. Some people don’t trust the oil injection system. If they’ve been premixing it and you’d like to switch back to the injection pump, fill the gas tank with premix, fill the oil tank, disconnect the oil line from the carb, run it until oil starts to come through the line, and then reconnect the oil line. Too rich on oil doesn’t hurt.

Thanks. Do these from 2001-06 have electric start?

Just bought a 2001 model. It does not have an oil tank, so I thought of adding oil to the fuel tank. How much oil per gasoline tank? Which oil should I use?

Someone must have removed it, those came with oil injection. But that doesn’t matter, you can premix and it will be just fine. The mixture is up to you, I run 32:1 or 4oz to a gallon in my scooters, mopeds and two stroke engines that do not have oil injection, some say that is too rich, but that is what I use in pre mix engines, really 50:1 or richer should be fine, The important thing is to use a good quality two stroke oil, I use amsoil interceptor but there are a lot of good choices for quality synthetic two stroke oil out there.

Have you heard of the oil injection not working on these and people having catastrophic failure? Or is it just a precaution.

I’ve never seen the pumps fail but I have seen an oil line fail, causing issues. That case is really rare, but I always at least inspect the oil line before using it. Also, when replacing the oil line, run a tank of premix, it takes the line a while to pump through. Don’t worry, I’ve used the oil injection feature on a bunch of scooters and my sportsman 90 and haven’t had a problem.

Hi, where is the oil drain plug to change the oil?
@striven82

Two stroke. No oil. The oil is in the gas. It's enough to keep the cylinder, crank, and bearings lubed.

Looking for guidance on removing the front plastics from my sportsman 90 I just got for free. Any help?

I have mine removed right now, it’s been a while since I’ve done it, I’m waiting to find a new gas tank, the process was pretty straight forward, I didn’t remove the back plastics first, I just took out all of the fasteners, everything in the way, and basically yanked them out if I remember right.

David Webb I just picked up a scrambler 50...I had to remove the left side handlebar cables which should just be the rear brake cable and the wiring harnesses to the main switch. Then you should be able to rotate the handlebars enough to get them through the hole in the front plastics.
