Thank you for this video! It’s hard to find a video with actually methodical and practical information! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I just started to pot grow a fir tree. It’s a foot long seedling, quite bear still. At what point do you start pruning/shaping a completely new tree? Could you talk about that? Thank you!

Hello, thank you for the comment. Usually for fir the first couple years are just to make sure there are no double leaders and check the side shoots for anything that is really out of balance. It's not until year 3-4 that you need to really start doing anything with the. Be aware that trees in pots, if above ground, are exposed to all the elements. Soil temp and moisture will be quite different than if the tree was in the ground.

Thank you, yes I actually created a playlist for one tree specifically. Here we see several trees for two years. My plan for this next tree is over the next three years. Seeing its different stages. It’s mainly focused that way because of its bud density can support this growth and I wanted to show that. Thanks again

Good stuff Tony! I get what you are saying about cutting the top of a smaller tree and then losing the natural leader the next year. It happens a lot! I am certainly going to look at leaving the longer leaders this year. The Michigan Choose and Cut meeting last year really got me rethinking my small-tree management.

Right, This year I want to try cutting the leader really early before the buds start developing, say at 12", and see if it grows a little and then develops a good crown.

We have 3 Fraser Firs. Newbie question but, what do you do if the leader isn't growing straight?

Thanks for the comment. I guess it depends on what you mean by straight. I’ve wondered the same thing. So I followed a Canaan Fir through the growing season to see what would happen. If the leader is cut or broken for some reason I will use a bamboo stake and tapener to correct the leader during the summer months.
