Great description and very informative. I run a giclee studio in Bruton, Somerset, UK and i think its important to add a couple of things if i may...When taking the photos if using a camera it can be better to take multiple photos over lapping by about an inch to get a more detailed image. I do this with large originals say 24"and above. There are different softwares out there now that will stitch these together with no issues. This gives you a higher res image to start the colour matching process with and ultimately the options to print at larger sizes than the originals. The other thing which I'm not sure was mentioned, a giclee print needs to be on an acid free archival paper or canvas to be a giclee print. This combined with original manufacture inks (not third party) make for a real giclee print, light and colour fast for 85 + years. Lastly all printers are different and its better to use bespoke print drives for each stock of fine art paper or canvas to match the colours better when printing on a certain printer. Again thank you for spreading the word and helping make art work more available to a wider audience.

Out of interest why are 3rd party inks a no no if they're still quality pigment inks that have been profiled?
@larrygray1557 Жыл бұрын
@@Marc-io6pv That's a big "if" still quality and profiled. Name brands, such as Canon and Epson inks, put the corporate name on the line vs some unknown, no name, factory in China cranking out ink. Even if that same factory was creating the ink for Epson or Canon, but a batch may not meet the stringent quality standard but still serviceable and marketed as "Compatible." Finally, you are spending thousands an camera and special (macro) lens to digitize, over $1000 on a printer, best premium archival quality paper, why are you cheaping out on ink? Reality is, depending on print size, it might cost $1 to $5 more that you are selling significantly higher and putting your name an reputation on the line.
@Marc-io6pv Жыл бұрын
@@larrygray1557 Point taken. I use '3rd party inks' for my DTF, Eco solvent, sublimation printers so wondering how bad it could be from a reputable brand was all. Yeah some random stuff from China's a no no. Also I guess it depends on the market, if you're trading off the naming glicee prints and selling high end then sure be as good as you can be and the margins there. If in my case of thinking at the time I just wanted to use that technique (just because I guess) but selling lower priced prints then yes that £4 a print can matter. Cheers

Thank you for this explanation! I'm currently eyeing a few prints on eBay but wasn't familiar with giclee.. this gives me much more confidence in the product and explains why price is a little higher than I'd expect. Definitely going to buy it now 😅 thanks again!

I’m looking to buy a giclee print online to fit an antique frame. I am pondering using modge podge to make the print look more like a painting… will I need to do that? Will it ruin the print? Would I be able to do this on a laminate mount?

So you want a printer with a wider color gamut that is calibrated and profiled. Instead of saying Giclee, which seems rather vague, it seems like the customer should just specify that they want the original color matched on a printed able to do RGB color and specify the type of paper.

Hi, thank you for the info. I have questions, not comments: Is Giclee print typically glossy? what is Hand Textured Giclee? Is Giclee art supposed to be expensive or at the same price range of hand painted art? Thanks
@maggiekgreen5 жыл бұрын
+Kam Popovecz Hi Kam, giclee prints can be either glossy or matte (the printer will usually ask), hand textured giclee is not something I have a lot of experience in, but it is a print with added texture to make it look more like an original oil painting. Giclee prints should not be as expensive as the original painting because they are a reproduction of the original and meant to be a more cost effective way to enjoy art.

Is it worth having Black & White photos printed on Giclee?
@Neil-Aspinall11 ай бұрын
Most certainly as this is where pigment ink printers with Fine Art papers excell. (color not so much)
@Neil-Aspinall11 ай бұрын
Your voice is so cute and cartoonish (not a bad thing) Mmm you didn't mention the fact that a true Giclee print requires two main properties to be claimed as a 'Giclee' print. One, it must be made with Fine Art archival papers like Hahnemühle and the type of ink used must be 'pigment' ink opposed to dye based inks. Something that your viewers must also realise is, pigment inks are no where near as dynamic as 'dye' based printers (dye is the common style ink in most printers) B&W prints with the correct paper will look very professional though. So how do I kow all this? I Have a top end pigment printer and was very surprised to discover that the color gamut is inferior to dye based inks. (Dye is not archival and that's why the pro's don't use it.)

Also the color gamust of pigment ink is not as dynamic as dye based inks. I have no idea why people claim the opposite?
