So happy to see this review, thank you for it! I love Holst Supersoft and knit everything with it. I normally hold it single with 3mm needles. Lately I have been holding it together with titicaca on 2,5mm and loving it. The sweaters are so thin and weightless while still being super soft and warm, never seethrough. And NO peeling even after years of constant wear! Just beautiful. Their 500g cones are usually more like 600g :)

Oh and of course I prewash the yarn before knitting with it :)

I just finished a shawl with it. It's really nice. I'm sure the fabric with those smaller needle sizes is wonderful. I've also had a few people mention the Titicaca trick, and I'll have to try it.

Thanks so much for this very informative video. I have tubs and tubs of Supersoft. I always hold it double and with a strand of Holst Titicaca for softness. It's a real pain in the neck but I take the time to wash my new cakes of Supersoft because I enjoy knitting so much more with a softer yarn. I wind it onto my swift, make a few ties, and then wash the heck out of it. Once dried, I wind it back into cakes. I also have the fan decks with samples of all of their yarns and refer to them quite often.

Sounds like a labor of love. The Titicaca sounds really nice.

Thank-you for this excellent review of Holst Supersoft. I knit Kate Davies' Ursula with this yarn, washed it 3 times with Eucalan and love how the finished result feels and looks, although I think I will use dish detergent for the first wash in future after seeing your result. To get gauge I had to use 2.75 needles . I ordered 2 more cones as well as a variety of cakes after my experience and have several more projects planned including a lace yoke. I was intrigued to see your other projects and comments on combining Supersoft with other fibres. I could not agree with you more. It is an incredibly well priced, versatile and high quality yarn that I have decided would be my 'desert island' choice. Cheers, Ruth from Nova Scotia

I want to thank you so much for this review. I have used Holst Garn yarn and learned of it from Stephen West. Your comments were so helpful - I was unaware of how much the yarn blooms. Also as you noted, it is quite affordable. I plan to order some more from their website-it’s great to have on hand when making shawls of different colors. Your video was wonderful. Straight to the point and answered so many questions.

That's so good to hear. Yes, if you wash it well it blooms quite nicely. It transforms incredibly at the very end. It's my go to shawl and colorwork yarn. Glad you found it helpful.

Just found your podcast- I adore supersoft and a little tip to your single rib issue…. I combine supersoft with titicaca- it just beefs it up a bit- especially with all over colorwork.

just a heads-up: when i block holst supersoft, it doesn't grow, it actually shrinks a bit! especially the row count. this is probably dependent on your knitting style, gauge and/or the way you wash it. if you haven't used it before, definitely swatch to see which way it goes for you! thanks for the great video! : )

Oh that super interesting. At least with my garments I know there is always increases in size. I haven't done many smaller projects with it, so I can't say anything about that.

I'm blocking-and-swatching-phobic. I think the technical term for that is "lazy." Anyhoo, it's wonderful to hear you talk about your swatching and blocking methods with this yarn. It's inspiring, and maybe a good example for lazy-boys like me. Yay to that gansey! It's lovely. You mentioned you consulted some books about ganseys. Have you done a video in which you talk about knitting books? I'm always interested to know what resources other people use, how they learn new techniques, and get inspiration, and I'd love to hear you talk about that.
@jimmydoesknitting
@jimmydoesknitting Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I have not gone over my knitting books. I don't have many. I also don't use them as much as I should. In terms of how I learned new techniques etc. it's mostly been through KZbin.

I've done a few garments in Holst Supersoft, and some others. They are still scratchy, so I don't think I washed them enough based on your video. Thanks for suggesting how to wash it.

Yea, the yarn is not merino soft, but washing it in the dish soap at least once and a couple of washes really makes a difference.

Great review and beautiful work on all of your projects. I just made the Dune Drifter top with Holst and am quite happy with it. Have more in my stash and will definitely use it. The colour I used was Carmine and it did bleed but with a red and the oils I expected that. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I own tons of Supersoft and love it but I have a pet peeve about it which is trying to find the beginning of the cake. I usually end of with a small clump of yarn that I have to unravel. Do you have a tip for me?

Hey Jimmy, have you prewashed the black wool before you used it for the colorwork sweater you wear? I´m afraid to use a white and a dark blue together without washing...
@jimmydoesknitting
@jimmydoesknitting 2 ай бұрын
I did not prewash the wool. The color for sure bleeds. What I do in this occasion is quick baths in cold water. Maybe 2 or 3 5 minute soaks before a longer one. I use dish soap (gets the spinning oil out) and vinegar (helps the color stick) and it seems to work out for me. If you are worried, I would swatch before hand and block it like you would block the garment and see what the bleeding situation looks like.

I was wondering if you have ever had to block an unfinished Super soft garment and then had to continue knitting on the blacked garment with unwashed yarn? Would this be a problem with matching tension in the garment? Can this be done successfully or am I just over thinking this? Would appreciate any feedback.
@jimmydoesknitting
@jimmydoesknitting Жыл бұрын
I want to make sure I understand the question. Are you asking if a mid project block would mess wit the tension in the garment? The answer is, you should be fine. It will look weird while knitting because one side has spinning oil and the other has minimal. But you knit both parts with the unwashed yarn and needles, so unless something personally changes, it should be fine. Just make sure to give it a good wash in the end. I hope that helps.

Now.... because I see you actually reply to comments 😂. I want to hold this yarn double and knit it in 5mm needles. Will it be too hole-y. I want to make a zipper swater (stockinette). Hope you answear, I see everyone knit with this yarn but holding it with other yarns. Thank you !!! (I haven't purchased yet and I am not sure if it fits my plan)
@jimmydoesknitting
@jimmydoesknitting 6 ай бұрын
I would say that it held alone for a garment is not going to get you the best fabric. I agree, holding it double would be the way to go. I think it's great for colorwork, an affordable single strand to be held with a fluff, or for shawls and scarves.

This is very helpful as i just bought a cone and planning to use it on a pullover. Would you recommend a first wash before knitting it?
@jimmydoesknitting
@jimmydoesknitting Жыл бұрын
That completely depends on your preference of your hand feel. Some people do try to wash out some of the oil first. I'm fine with knitting it off the cone, but it does give me a bit of rope burn sometimes. It will be softer if you wash it first. It will be even softer after you do your final block. It's important you gauge swatch regardless.
