Great video guys, love the content! How did living in Madrid compare to the other places you have lived?
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 4 жыл бұрын
Tom E Hey, thanks for the question. It was a different time in our life. I (Josh) was living with 2 Spanish roommates and Kalie was living with a Spanish family outside of the city in a town called Ajalvir. We weren’t married so it was a different lifestyle. You know? Madrid wasn’t as safe as the other places we lived but it was far more interesting. We also had a great chance to travel by bus and train to a lot of different places. In South Korea, we always had to fly to leave the country. It was the same with Singapore but you could get cheap flights. Saudi, you could travel by car but it takes a while. Accommodations were pretty cheap but we were splitting housing costs. Groceries compared to other countries were particularly cheap although we didn’t buy an American products because we were making so little money. We also had to do a lot of the governmental admin things ourselves and it felt a bit more involved than any of the other places we lived.

I was there for 4 nights at the end of May. It rained a lot, which wasn't bad since the temperature shot up into the 90s (F) shortly thereafter. I stayed in the dead center of the city center and loved it - nice hotel, and everything I could possibly want was a short walk away. Very pretty, social, clean, and enjoyable city that I would LOVE to live in (assuming I can get air conditioning!!!)

Great question. We're not sure about public schools having a lot of English. They'll have an English class but it won't typically be bilingual. There are a few there. You should check out bilingual schools that are charter schools like Gredos. www.gsdeducacion.com/ Their curriculum is in Spanish and English about 50/50 but they'll have plenty of teachers and kids there that speak English enough to allow them learn Spanish quickly and be learning it like drinking from a fire hose.

@Bob el Silencioso You don't think that jobs are low paid in Madrid for English speaking expats? Those coming from US, Canada, UK, Australia?
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 жыл бұрын
@Bob el Silencioso Right but by comparison and to El Zorro’s point, it’s less. For example, median income in Washington DC $80k but Madrid the upper end of the general salary range is €3,500 per month. Good thing about Madrid is the cost of living is much less than DC too.
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 жыл бұрын
@Bob el Silencioso we don’t disagree but comparing wages, which we are, they’re low. We definitely agree that cost of living is much higher in DC or London or Sydney but wages are low by comparison in Madrid. Then the argument shifts to where it needs to go and that’s savings rate, and that becomes a very personal thing in terms of how someone can budget and stick to it and then reinvest those savings. Thanks for the dialogue. Have a great weekend! 👍

Absolutely 100% true. Wages in Madrid in general are a disgrace. They are great if you're a star football player other wise the majority of jobs are terribly paid. I live in Melbourne , Australia where funnily enough the cost of living is more or less the same as in Madrid. Yet the wages absolutely blow Madrid's to smithereens. Every young Spaniard I meet is crazy to stay in Melbourne , precisely because of the faaaaarq superior standard of living financially speaking.

@ExpatsEverywhere

Great questions. To be honest, when we lived there, we would say no and that it's fragmented. There are a decent amount of Americans there, but to say their in community with each other is different. @@ExpatsEverywhere thanks for the response and so what your saying is they aren’t really connected as a community right there all just doing their own thing. @ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 жыл бұрын
@@chinglee100 The community is a bit fragmented. There's a huge foreign community of Madrid. You won't find any problem finding English speakers, which could be problematic if you're wanting to learn and speak Castilian Spanish often (which you should IMO). I would not call Madrid dangerous, but I wouldn't call it safe either. The biggest thing is pickpockets, but we've personally know several people that were robbed and not pick pocketed. Does that make clearer sense? If you're asking us if we wouldn't go back there with our daughter to live because of safety issues, the answer would be, no. We would go back. - Josh & Kalie

Do you like Madrid or Barcelona more?
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. We get that a lot. We lived in Madrid and not Barcelona so it's a little hard to compare what living is like but we think Barcelona is better to visit for sure. The people seem to be warmer. If you don't speak any Spanish or Catalan then you'll find the level of English is better in Barcelona. There's more variety of things to do in Barcelona too. On the other hand, Madrid seems to be a better city to live in because of the central location in the country allows easy travel everywhere, and you're not going to be treated like a tourist everywhere like you would in Barcelona. This is just our opinion. - Josh & Kalie

Oh no, people indeed say that. It's accent and vocabulary. It's like when people say...He speaks American. Of course American isn't its own language but it's American English is what they're referring to. So in this way, A madrileños might say that someone speaks Mexican.

I dont see a lot of Latino comments here but I believe what they meant is.. Spanish or spain spanish (Castellano) that is one of the languages they speak in Spain is for a lot of Latino countries our mother tongue but we have derive and move away from it in crazy ways.. people from mexico speak spanish that comes from Castellano but they have made it their own as people from Center and south America. so when somebody says i speak Mexican or any other coutry it means that not only the accent but the rules and articulation is different. an example of this will be American English vs British English.

@@ExpatsEverywhere, nobody in Madrid would say that. Maybe in New York. Mexicans don't migrate to Spain. Maybe they would speak of "latinos" instead. There are lots of Venezuelans, Equadorians, Colombians, Peruvians, Argentinians and Dominicans in Madrid, but not Mexicans.

O sea, casi nada.
