I'll preface my comment with I'm just a passerby providing limited knowledge feedback. Especially as someone who's only seen a couple of your most recent videos (the gr86 blowing up and this one) something that stands out to me is that you don't know what exact boost PSI you make. Estimating your boost PSI based on "how fast your car is compared to someone else's car" with a similar setup doesn't really make sense to me and kinda a red flag.... Shouldn't you know exactly what your boost PSI your tune pushes? When I had my WRX, my tuner informed me that max psi was 17/18. I even had a different map with lower boost PSI in the winter. Granted I had a Cobb AP that I would use as gauges sometimes, but even when I stopped using my AP, I knew what my boost PSI should be, and sometimes when I'm making heavy pulls, my tuner implemented a failsafe that would cut boost if I went over the max PSI..... Wouldn't the tuner share that kinda information? Perhaps your engine blew up due to over boost? Do you have a 3-port EBCS?

I had exactly the same thought. Says it hasn't been dyno'd either... that would be the first thing I did after getting it, even if getting a tune off somebody else. A dyno tune is much cheaper in hindsight than blowing an engine. Also mentions he has supporting mods, then lists clutch and an oil catch can. The clutch makes no difference and the catch can is needed for boost. No mention of oiling / cooling upgrades.

@giggsow9760 yeah, I was trying to give him benefit of doubt, but signs point to negligence tbh :/ but I don’t like to judge 🤷‍♂️ I wish him luck on his built block tho!

Same thoughts here. If you are boosting an NA engine you should know EXACTLY what boost you are running and should be doing dyno runs to check consistency and how the engine is handling it.

An actual dyno tune may have prevented the failure because an e tune is counting on the wideband and boost readings. If a sensor is a little off there would be no way to tell over the internet. Newer aftermarket clutches go bad all the time (happened to me this year) so I would definitely inspect/resurface that for the build. Looking forward to watching!

I think it’s gonna be dope asf to see a new forge block going in and it might be a good series but thinking money wise, is it worth putting a lot of money in again to still be scared knowing that a subie engine will blow at any time. I think a good ass series that would make the whole game change is a K-swap gr86. Since Austin isn’t in that route anymore yall can make it happened. Both route is good, can’t wait to see what next!
@carantix
@carantix 4 күн бұрын
We would do a k series but we don’t have very much expertise there and as Austin found out, there’s very little support for them as well so it’s hard to get everything together. Also, Derek’s rebuilt his entire fa20 before multiple times so we have a lot of knowledge going into this new project when the forged internals come out. We really do hope that this can hold together long enough or we might just have to engine swap it in the future however…👀

I have a 1st gen 86 boost for 30k+ miles, 10psi, a little over 300hp. I feel like most people blowing up their motor, it is caused by oiling. On modern engines with tighter clearances, running thicker oil than recommended isn't a good idea. IMO the thicker oil is a reason for people to spin bearings and cause engine failure. If anyone else has experience with this let me know what you guys think.

Serious question, at this point why not just get a lightly used Nissan Z? I had an FRS and loved it but the sketchy low ceiling engine and glass transmission made me get an STI with a forged IAG engine, i just didnt trust tuning the FA engine more than headers exhaust and a tune.

first time viewer so don't know if you've done this before. I would check the JDL header. My experience is that they have the runners smaller to try and spool the turbo faster. The problem is that Jesse doesn't taper the motor side of the header so there is a ton of turbulence and i bet there is also more heat built up than there should be because of that. So porting is a must. I noted a big change in my ZN6. I did catch you mentioned there wasn't excessive heat so i wonder if maybe you didn't have RTV issue. Not the typical pick up issue but rather an RTV gap where you could of had low oil pressure.
@carantix
@carantix 4 күн бұрын
Good point about the headers! That honestly could’ve contributed towards the failure. We’ll do more research on that tbh just to rule that out as a failure point. As far as lost oil pressure, that’s definitely an option as well since we never had gauges installed for this car to monitor things like oil pressure ://

I spoke to outfront about a week ago and they said they are about 5-6 weeks out from having production rods and pistons made for the gr86 engine and they said they’ll also have built short blocks for sale as well if you want a short block or just pistons and rods. They said they’ll have both options.

Sorry about the blown engine. In my experience, when rods go through a block it’s due to either having too much power for the setup or more commonly inproper oiling. When bearings don’t have enough oil, it can result in that type of failure. With boost generating more heat, you should consider a 0w40 (flow for cold starts and then viscosity to withstand higher temps especially under load). Also, these boxer engines are known to have scavenging with not enough oil returns back to the pan. There is an oil passage within the block that restricts oil flow, it can be drilled to be larger which is especially needed when considering exceeding 300whp. MotoIQ has done a full break down video on how to help build a reliable FA engine, if you’re considering building it. OR purchase a high capacity pan in the near future from these companies to release them in the near future: Formula Delta or Verus Engineering. Hope that helps 👍🏽

I will try to keep this thing on E 85 only. High compression and boost specially on 91 octane your one tank of bad gas away from a blown motor.

Did you have a boost gauge? And I’m not referring to the one that is in ecutek app. I mean an actually boost gauge. Reason for asking is someone else who boosted their gr86 was reading 16psi from an actually boost gauge boost gauge while their Ecutek app only read 8psi. Most likely you overboosted

3:24 yes there is a HKS has a turbo kit which I’m a go for and 2 Stroker kits to choose from which is heads, rods and camshaft which I will be getting the step 2 2.5 liter conversion kit with their 1.2mm head gasket to reduce the compression from its N.A. 12:1 to 11:3, with their oil cooler and maybe their clutch but right now HKS everything they also have a built block

As a amateur tuner the red flags are enormous. You said it was tuned by a reputable tuner but you don't know what your target boost is? That is basic information you should have been given. Also, you should have gotten at least a virtual dyno plot to provide an idea as to what it was making, they may not be that accurate but still give good perspective on how the car is performing.
@carantix
@carantix 7 күн бұрын
We personally think that it should be given upon asking. We didn’t ask about it and that’s our fault for not wanting all the information. They really are reputable and we really doubt that they could’ve caused the fault. Possible but highly unlikely!
@boost331
@boost331 8 күн бұрын
The rods dont just break on these cars. The bearings fail and then the rod flies out. The bearings fail from detonation. Detonation is from a bad tune, which is easy to do if you are foolish enough to run a bunch of boost on a high compression engine without E85 or water\meth. You can build the best block in the world, if you are gonna jam 12psi into a high compression flat 4 on 91-93 octane alone it will blow again.

@OlmoDior E tune is the only way these engines are safe. Safer than the stock tune honestly.
@sidebrake13

Probably better to run 7psi or less for a stock block and also have it taper down to 5psi at redline for more safety.

Unless you originally intended to blow the engines up for whatever reason, actually blowing them up means you did not do enough support mods. To blow two engines up, you and those helping you don't know what you're doing.

You have no idea what your HP or PSI nunbers were, didn't dyno the car, didn't run suppporting mods (a clutch and thicker oil are not supporting mods), and didnt replace any engine parts eith forged parts. This outcome was unsuprising.
@jasonguertin
@jasonguertin Күн бұрын
Can you explain why dyno'ing the car would mitigate anything? The tuner should be going off timing, no? The numbers you get to the wheel are just the end result. That said, i agree the "supporting mods"are not supporting mods. And there are way too many red flags to hand wave away. An oil catch can is a nice to have but in no way would help prevent what the poster went through.
