There seems to be a direction to all of this... which is the process of complexification, defined as the integration of differentiated parts into a more functional whole. This seems to occur at all levels of reality that we know of. quarks -> atoms -> molecules -> abiogenesis -> cells -> multicellular -> organisms -> groups -> societies -> nations -> ??? + biosphere Symbiosis and cooperation = complexification Sorry if this doesn't make sense!

I want to preface by saying that I LOVE Kurtzgesagt videos. It's amazing that such high quality content is available freely on the internet. However, as a geoscientist I noticed a pretty glaring (and perfectly dead wrong) claim in this particular video. At 3:42, you say that the lithosphere is a viscous, convective layer below the crust but the asthenosphere is more solid. This is exactly backwards. The lithosphere (which includes the crust) is brittle and behaves how we typically think of a solid. As you move deeper you hit the brittle-ductile transition where rock no longer breaks in a rigid fashion, but it instead flows and convects. This is the asthenosphere, and the lithosphere "floats" on it.

The stupidity of a system that is ironically supposed to teach us and prepare us for "life" aka making us part of a system that makes us work for useless paper but backtracking it and making it vital for survival double sided dagger :P
@crytocc8 жыл бұрын
There are some better teaching methods, such as Sudbury Valley education. Unfortunately, most of formalized education still follows the "industrial model" of trying to churn out standardized "workers" with a standard set of knowledge, which doesn't really work in today's society, even if it worked well for the industrial revolution...
@chris26568 жыл бұрын
crytocc I agree. I would have loved it I had a school were I could learn anything I wondered about, even as a gr.11 student. I still find myself questioning things and how they work, just more complex things. I don't know if it's me by I almost find myself being discouraged from asking these questions (whether that's by peers or teachers simply being unable to answer questions). Hopefully some point in the future we can actually adress this outdated way of doing things.
@crytocc8 жыл бұрын
+Chris ar It's not just you! While there are some good teachers (in regular schools as well), in my experience they mostly just consider the curriculum to be most important, and since other questions get in the way of that... they're not really desired. Consequently, this creates an environment where the students just want to get through the lessons and go home... and so they discourage questions as well, because it means they need to spend more effort than strictly required. So yeah, it's completely understandable that you feel discouraged. If you're curious, I recommend seeking out knowledgeable people on your topics of interest, outside of school. I personally made the decision to drop out of high school and go my own way for similar reasons (and now work as a freelance software developer and tutor).
