Preparing an altered book correctly is essential for getting your best results in your layouts. Today I break down how to identify the best book for altering, where to find it, how to tear out pages, and gluing pages together for secure, flat canvasses to create your altered book on. This is a lot of video: consider it a master class in altered book prep.
Here is a link to my altered books playlist here on KZbin with flip throughs and how-tos.

Thank you, Catherine. I have done this book-preparing video before but get questions about it week in and week out so thought it might be welcome again. And yes, glue. Why is it when I want a little bit to hold something together, it doesn't, and then I find two huge sections now inseparable because I overlooked the smallest smidgen of the stuff? Glue gremlins?

Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom, knowledge and experience with us. This is the second of your videos I’ve watched as I’m interested in learning to alter books. I really appreciate you sharing from your own experiences and work and I love how you share in a kind, sometimes humorous, way that feels full of grace, awareness and filled with deep meaning which I believe we can apply not only to the art of book altering but also to other parts of our lives, experiences, healing journeys and characters-part of the reason I appreciate the practice of book altering and art journaling as well as other interests I have. I love how your wise and gentle character is evident in your videos and heard in your voice, how you share your valuable information and insights with us. Thank you for being an inspiration and providing some peace and calm in my life. I look forward to seeing more of your work and continuing to learn from you through more of your videos.

Dear Amanda, I want to tell you how much this message means to me. While art is my business is it also very much my vocation and as a teacher a lot of what I do is nudge, bribe, nag, pull, and so on so that we can all take a chance and make and not hesitate to shout it from the rooftops that we are creative and creators. I truly believe that as more and more of us do this we will make the world a better (or less bad, at any rate) place. So in a lot of ways it is why I get up in the morning and as such, it means so, so much to me that you get it. Thank you for reaching out and I hope I hear from you again! Wildly, creatively yours, Kelly

Hi Kelly, I have watched this yesterday, but still wanted to comment because it was another excellent video on "how to altered books" which had some extra valuable info in it🙏 While watching, I realised that my first altered book which I started last winter and have picked up again now, winter again here, has some of the issues you talking about, like a sort of step up from one page to the other, it doesn't lay completely flat. I have used teabags, in almost every signature where I could see issues arising 😬, but I want to keep on going with it, since it's the first book. It's bright yellow from the 1950, I love the name of the writer "Storm Jameson" and the title "The Hidden River", like deep waters, very emotional, in a good way. I actually did the cover image first, it's a duck taking off , landscape below,sky above , and the yellow beak works so well with the yellow book cover🦆 So, I am going to persevere and work with what I've got🙂

So here's the deal. If you care about a piece it is not a mistake to carry on. In fact it would be kind of wrong to abandon it. But - you probably have to accept that it is going to be imperfect and if you do then you are going to enjoy working in it a lot more. So what if it doesn't lie flat? It's your book, lean into it. I have done this a couple of times and while I wasn't able to sell the books in the end, I could enjoy keeping them for myself and learning from the whole process. Tea bags rock! Kelly

I have been searching and watching so many tutorials on altered books, and your's just explains it so clearly. Thank you for that. The only thing I do differently, is that I don't tear from the middle of the signature, but rather the opposing pages deeper into the signature - if that makes sense. It's just personal preference, as I feel that tearing at the stitching might weaken the book. Your tutorials are amazing!!!
@BookandPaperArts

Thanks for comparing notes. I have done this way of tearing and gluing as well. Sometimes I just let the book talk to me and tell me where to start and stop (I bet you know what I mean😉) but it is kind of hard to use that as a base for teaching, especially trying to reach beginners who are already nervous as all get out tearing out pages in the first place. 😺Kelly

Well...texture paste is pretty much the same thing as putty. In fact, I have used dry wall joint compound...I think it's also called spackling, with stencils. Anyway, it's about $5 for 32 oz. But you have to paint it or gesso it or it will dissolve. But it's good to learn with when doing this as a fun time. Love your channel! I have learned a lot from you. Also, I tried to comment on an old post on your blog about Raintree Country but it didn't take, probably something on my end though.

The edges of the pages will be flush if the cover side of the book is used to press the glued pages together, instead of the putty knife. The knife, or even an old credit card, or bonefolder, can then be used to press the air out an make everything flat. This way the integrity of the structue is maintained.

@BookandPaperArts
@BookandPaperArts 3 ай бұрын
Hi Conny. Well, it is hard to diagnose at a distance but I can say that each book is different and even after doing this for many years I have about one out of three fall apart on me. Perhaps you could try - take a thin but pliable paper (mulberry or rice paper or even tea bags or other thinnish paper from another book) and fold in half. (It doesn't have to cover the whole page so much as the crease where the binding/spine is.) Glue half to one page and half to the other so that you are kind of creating a new spine/binding in the crease of the two pages that are coming apart. If that doesn't work, the last ditch idea is to take out all of the pages and bind blank papers into the book for a fun, handmade blank book. Good luck! And here is another video that might help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqvLgKeviK2NpLc&pp=gAQBiAQB
