Like so many other sci-fi films "Saturn 3" seems to have an Occult layer...Notice that the poster says, "Something is WAtching, WAiting and WAnting on Saturn". This repetition of 'Wa - Wa - Wa' is a reference to 666. (In Hebrew the number 6 is also the sound 'Waw'.) At the end of the film, Farrah returns to Earth as an alien infiltrator - the 'alien that is among you' mentioned in Deuteronomy. (She even does a shapeshift in her eye as she walks toward the camera in the final scene.) According to the Occult, Saturn is the throne of 666 and the All Seeing Eye that uses Masonic puppets to control the Earth.

Kirk Douglas wasn't interested in the "concept" and was "intrigued" by the project. He wanted to bang Farrah Fawcett. Saturn 3 is no Rembrandt by any means, co-existing in the shadow of Star Wars etc. Nevertheless, I saw this movie when it first came out and really enjoyed it. It was good to see Douglas and Keitel in a Sci-Fi movie for a change and is perhaps one of Farrah Fawcetts best roles. Hector is also one of the most innovative robot designs ever filmed and the sets & model work are amazing. The film score hooks are still very catchy and emulate the power of Hector very effectively. Yes the script & acting could have been better but what really lets the film down ultimately, is poor promotion at the time of release. Much like other classics of the time (such as Carpenters 'The Thing') it had limited cinema circulation, typically being binned as a "video nasty" and forever consigned to the dusty upper-shelves of small family run video stores, in a sun-faded VHS coffin. It is a shame that this film got so much flack when it was released, as I consider it a cult classic but thats just my humble opinion ;)

@Daniel Appleton , and they should be morally opposed to such things, as abortion is murder and not only is there that sleeping together before being married wrong, but that, like many real world workplaces, it would cause bias, as well as friction, among not only the dating, or married, co-workers, but also among the people that they work with in real life. Now in most jobs, this would not be an issue, let alone if it was a family owned business, but there are some businesses, most notably in the military and government sectors, that other bosses, co-workers, or, worst, competitors, enemies of the state, rogue states, criminals, and terrorists that would love to manipulate people to their own ends. This is why military and government positions favor single people. Finally, anyone that promotes fucking robots is someone that needs not to be a living being.

@@paxhumana2015 Sleeping together before marriage is wrong, you say. However, 99% of people engage in such 'illicit' behaviour, whether they possess religious beliefs or not...and I guess that says plenty about religious hypocrisy, doesn't it? Incidentally, pre-marital sex may be "wrong" in your eyes, but that's not a universal view shared by all. After all, not everyone leads a life that's centred around religion, just as not everyone feels an obligation to get married. Kirk Douglas is a titan centenarian golden age actor whose influence, legacy and prowess as a talent cannot be denied. But, at age 63 in 1979(assumed start date of shooting for Saturn 3), was a bit old to be cast as a 'leading man' in a rigorous space captain role. Especially juxtaposed to Farrah. Give Fawcett credit for stepping outside of the classic ingénue/femme fatale-roles and taking on ambitious films like Logan's Run and Saturn 3. Sad that her later career, vices and life end was so tragic.

Thanks for covering this film. The production design is absolutely wonderful, and makes this well-worth watching from my standpoint. The only real surprise, visually, were the visual efx, which looked like they were made for a far cheaper movie---water and vertical supports clearly visible within Saturn's rings?---just one of the surprisingly low grade efx shots in an otherwise beautifully designed film (those control panels! Those glistening walled tunnels! etc)...There are some good efx shots, but the weak ones-, along with---far more importantly---a haphazard story,, really mess up what seemed to have major potential at first glance. Still, I do like the film a lot. Thanks again!

Also the pairing of Farah and Douglas was cool too, in this modern age of inclusion and non-discrimination it was kinda of ahead of its time, showing a loving relationship between people of vastly different ages, being normal and excepted and not in some way unacceptable. I loved the designs too, Hector looked genuinely menacing and dangerous, the set design as well was very nicely done.

Despite all the filming issues that have been outlined in this video; despite the poor response by film critics upon its release; despite the film flopping at the box office; despite Farrah Fawcett not being my personal cup of tea; despite my finding it odd that crinkly Kirk Douglas's character, Adam, was seemingly found highly attractive by a much younger, sexier, far more energised partner...well, I've always been fascinated by this highly unusual, one of a kind film. Stylish, though broody Harvey Keitel was suitably menacing...Hector was scary enough to put you on edge every time you saw him...and the sound effects (especially Hector's) were enough to grate your nerves. The film may have been almost an accident in the making, but I actually think it works in a weird, odd kind of way. Certainly, Saturn 3 is greater than the sum of its parts, and is, to my mind, quite underrated and underappreciated. In fact, all sci-fi fans should watch this film at least once because it's a quite unique experience.

I absolutely have to recommend The Apostle. Pretty much the only movie that gets the geography of East Texas right. You are correct that Farrah does a great job, and Duvall is perfect and believable. Duvall gets the accent right and Farrah simply reverts to the natural accent of her youth. BTW: The song "Midnight Train to Georgia" was originally titled "Midnight Plane to Houston". A songwriter who knew Lee Majors heard that Lee Majors was taking an inconvenient flight from LA to Houston and then hoping to hire a cheap limo he could sleep in to take him to Corpus Christi. That inspired the song. It was changed to a train and Georgia to be more romantic.

I thought the movie was okay. It was no Kubric film, but then what is? When I saw it as a kid, Hector scared the hell out of me. And I found it difficult to sleep peacefully for a week after. I think the movie deserves a remake. One thing I could never understand was why the captain deliberately connected to Hector and fed it lustful thoughts about Farrah. What was the point of that? Was it to make the robot evil as part of the plot line? Would the robot have remained docile otherwise? Was it because the captain was hoping Hector would kill the major, so the captain could then take and use Farrah's character? The robot couldn't physically have sex with a woman because it isn't equipped, although I suppose it could fashion something or recycle the captains (ahem) equipment. But even still the sexual pleasure aspect of the human brain might not be part of hector's brain. Many questions left unanswered.

Good idea - dire result. Farrah later became a pretty good actress in movies like The Burning Bed and Extremities.

Extremely impressed when seeing it as kid. Didn't age well, but Hector is still one of the most impressive robots ever created. Might make for good remake.

I didn't know about this film when it came out, but saw promotions for it at video clubs, and always thought it looked cheap and uninteresting. After seeing this, I now know it wasn't cheap. It still doesn't look interesting.

Like Damnation Alley, this film had such promise, but it seemed to get in its own way. The robot was scary, but it also was a bit clunky as a villain (think ED-209 minus the humor). Keitel's character could have been expanded a bit as well. Douglas and Farrah are tough calls...if they would have had a decent script to work from, it could have been much better for all involved. I liked it when I first watched it, but it hasn't really aged well (unlike say, Robocop). A reboot could be welcome if it didn't make the mistakes of the original.

The best part of the movie now and then was the stylized look. The space equipment and ships had a slick aerospace industry look.Things look like they were made to look cool just like military and space stuff really is in real life would be as apposed to that oil rig look you see in almost every other production..

I am not big on science fiction movies. I have never seen "Star wars". I did see this film, "Saturn 3" because I was a huge Farrah Fawcett fan. The film wasn't bad and Farrah looked beautiful! The sexy space suit was not in the film when I saw it thank God. That scene was ridiculous! Saturn 3 foreshadowed films like "Terminator" and "Aliens" . Farrah Fawcett proved her critics wrong a few years later with the television film "The burning bed" and other projects.

I watched this as a kid and Hector scared the living daylights out of me. I could see him stand in the shadows of my room at night. Very freaky.

Very crazy movie. Obviously hampered by serious problems before, during and after production.

This wasn't a good movie but you can clearly see why Farrah is so revered.

Watching the movie pissed me off. Someone took the makings of an awesome story and turned them into crap. So I started writing the story that the movie SHOULD HAVE been. Farah Fawcett's character became Milfred DeVine, an unwitting clone who was about to be kidnapped and taken to some uber's harem. Kirk Douglass' character became Roger Witt, the low-level uber overseeing the process. Howie Cartell's (sp?) character became Michael "Rannon" Pace, a fugitive Robot psychologizer* and the hero of the story. Finally, Hector the Robot became Superior Detective 413, the leader of the team tasked with bringing Rannon to justice (and later Rannon's acolyte who would bring Witt to justice). Rannon is on the run because, when he was ordered to capture "The DeVine Project," he found out what she was and turned the job down and the ubers decided that he knew too much. The worst part of it, from Rannon's and 413''s point of view, is that, since Millie is a clone and not a natural-born human, she has no legal rights and everything they're trying to do to her is completely legal. The title of the story is "Scions of Man." Maybe someday I'll even finish it. LOL! *In "Saturn 3," a robot went crazy enough to start killing people. Psychologizers, in my story, are the professionals called in to restore the sanity of such constructs or to put them to rest.

I ordered a copy and it was in mono. This movie would have been better in stereo.

I have to disagree about Faraw Fawcett, Extremities, and The Burning Bed is some of her best work, great video btw!

The main thing I remember about this is they used some of these sound effects in aliens.
