Hi! I just wanted to comment on a couple of differences between the California CC system and colleges part of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and University. Since some students mat be discouraged regarding the UC/CSU system due to competition, I thought you might want to know a few things that are different. 1.) General education requirements for universities don't have a universal GE system that applies to all schools. Hence, there is no IGETC nor specific GE path that you will have to satisfy as part of your AA. Therefore, it's highly recommended that students work with counselors at the CC and, university they wish to transfer to, so that students will avoid either taking unnecessary classes or repeating classes that did not transfer. 2.) Although the IGETC doesn't exist here, students can earn an associates that will satisfy most, if not all, GE requirements at a university that is accredited as part of the northwest commission on colleges and universities. Hence, while students will always have GE regardless of where you transfer to, students in California may not necessary be granted a degree for completing the IGETC while students in the northwest can most likely show their Associates to someone even if they choose not to transfer. 3.) Yes, I am aware that California community colleges offer transfer degrees too. However, since our colleges don't have a fixed universal GE certification, I am guessing that a transfer associates in California is a path less traveled as opposed to certifying the IGETC or CSU GE breaths. Please inform me because I actually don't know.. However, in the northwest I am guessing more students who wish to transfer to a 4 year complete an associates since it gives students priority consideration in the college admissions process. AA- DTA (direct transfer agreement) is never required when transferring and of course you can transfer without it. However, since the AA-DTA gives you priority, I'd think more students would complete the associates as to opposed to transferring with no degree 4.) Let me clear this up. I know no degree is given specifically just for completing the IGETC; however, I do know Associate Degrees in southern California CC'S like Santa Monica college have different parts of the degree that need to be fulfilled, such as a multicultural class, your concentration, and then your choice of the GE path (IGETC, CSU, Community College GE). Our associates degrees known as AAAS which are vocational degrees have their own requirements that's specific to the degree or certificate yet be classified as certain categories such as communication, human relations, multicultural, and qualitative reasoning and human relations. This us just specific to my CC. Other CC'S will have different requirements for their AAAS. However, such requirements are generally 25 credits or less. 15-20 credits is more common. Some degrees have specific QSR courses that are more specific to a certain degree and is more tailored to that student's prigrans, such as our Digital Audio Engineering AAAS has students take The Acoustics of Music to fulfill the QSR requirement instead of taking traditional math classes. Visual Communication majors take business math to fulfill their QSR. Unfortunately, the multicultural requirement for any AAAS at my school is not specific toward majors and carry transfer credit, such as intro to multicultural studies. Seattle's college system has something similar to a diversity requirement but is more flexible so you don't necessarily have to take multicultural studies. Each AAS is different and can require almost 120 credits with only a few courses that transfer (unless you are in a vocational business or accounting degree program). The Transfer DTA associates known as AA-DTA or just Associates on Arts are universally around 90 quarter credits. Some colleges nay be slightly higher, but they generally require less than 100 credits. You can also obtain an Associates Individual Plan, but is more specifically aimed at the UW with the small caveat stating the AA-IP doesn't necessarily hold the same agreement as an AA-DTA and classes won't necessarily transfer. With the AA-DTA, you are basically guaranteed junior status when transferring. 5.) Certification of proficiency have GE requirements, which generally boils down to English Composition 1, QSR, and maybe a couple of other classes. Certificates of Proficiency are around 40-60;credits. However. Short term certificates are generally 20 credits or less AND general don't have any GE required as they are made to be done in a quarter or two. C.P's are 1 year programs. Financial aid 1. Unlike Cal Grants which have a random chosen GPA each year, the Washington College grant is 100% based on need. The only GPA requirement is that the student meets SAP requirements and generally their income mist be 200% below poverty. You might get a little if you are above. 2. ) Opportunity grant. I'm not sure if California has anything like this. It is offered through the state Workforce Office and pays for 45 credits in specific AAAS training programs. Transfer degrees are in illegible to receive funding. All applicants must apply for financial aid to receive thus grant but must also go to a separate interview and fill out am opportunity grant program. Although it does not cover transfer degrees, if you choose a career AAAS that are generally offered at 4 year schools (such as business administration), it's still possible to transfer even though the OC would not pay for the transfer degree. It's just much harder to transfer without a transfer degree.

@@lisaschooler8079 no problem. Just to clarify, I'm comparing differences about colors up here in the northwest (Oregon, Idaho, Washington) and comparing it to the California system. Hence, if I say here, I'm referring to the Northwest. My list might seem a bit confusing since I'm talking about both. But thanks for reading. Especially, if you see something like IGETC, that is referring to the University of California's general education requirements that students going to community colleges can go after to certify all general education requirements have been made prior to transfer. It's not a degree. It's a certification saying all lower division GE is done. California State university (csu have their own path that csn ne fine before transferring but is not the IGETC). It's kind of difficult to have a counselor certify your IGETC if you are from out of state since vary few classes may transfer. They might not slso know what the IGETC is. But it's wonderful fir Californians. I a current CC student but in Washington State. I used to live in California. That's how I know about the IGETC. But that is also how I can compare it to transferring to a local university in Washington State. In a land where there is no IGETC, students go after transfer degrees. They automatically fulfill GE for colleges in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Additionally, all local residents are guaranteed admission to at least Easteen Washington University if they have completed the AA-DTA (direct transfer agreement). No university in California will auto accept anyone just because they have a transfer degree. But residents of Washington state can at least go to Easteen Washington. University of Washington-Seattle is more competitive. I'm looking back at some of my comments and I just wanted to clarify some confusing statements. Also when I said there is no universal general education path here in the northwest, I was implying that we don't have igetcc certification. Of course, colleges are all going to require different types of classes. However, colleges in the northwest have nothing similar to that of the igetcc -- one general education path certifying all ge requirements that students at community colleges can follow. Yes, colleges up here in the northwest offer AA-DTA's which are similar in terms of fulfilling GE, but it's not a universal path agreed to by all colleges in rhe state. However, it is an articulatuon agreement so most colleges will have considered you to be of junior status with most GE completed, if not, all.
