For those who don't know, the SAFER barriers were created in America in response to the crash that killed Dale Earnhardt Sr. They're used at basically every Nascar track.

SAFER barriers are also more or less standard at every American speedway oval, and have been for about 20 years. They do a great job of absorbing and dissipating forces away from the driver, and are a damn sight better than just hitting a concrete wall.

Everything is unusual this year... entering the final 2 races with the title wide open between two drivers from two different teams, a totally exquisite circuit that nobody knows that well what to expect from it and having F1 races so close to Christmas. Shame they didn't add a Lapland GP after Abu Dhabi to go with the season. Also, wasn't aware there was another circuit in the cards to replace this one for 2023... so, in case we get to love this track it will all be too fleeting.

I expect at least few serious crashes throughout whole weekend. Fast track + concrete banking. It's clear that safety wasn't main concern 🤑
@Bazzookie
@Bazzookie 3 жыл бұрын
They're utilizing safer barriers which were developed specifically by the IMS group, the people who run the Indy 500, as well as Indycar. Those barriers easily protect drivers in crashes of speeds over 230 mph (370 kmh) and are standard at every high speed oval in the United States. I'd say the track is probably pretty safe.

@@Bazzookie the barriers are safe but safety is out the window when you get hit by another car at 200+
@Bazzookie
@Bazzookie 3 жыл бұрын
@@jaypotts2085 not really, cars collide in Indycar all the time on ovals at speeds of 200+ mph. With head protection like the halo, the only safety concern would be the crash structure of the car, and F1 cars are incredibly safe in that regard. Plus, the racing in F1, particularly at a track like this, just won’t be close enough in the incredibly high speed portions where cars colliding well really be an issue. There will be too much dirty air for any close racing. Indianapolis is arguably one of the safest race tracks in the world and handles speeds way greater than we’ll probably see in Saudi Arabia. Honestly, the only real safety concern would be a car getting airborn and getting into catch fencing, but the odds of that happening are basically zero.
@smivl7694
@smivl7694 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bazzookie F1 cars are made to take 1 hit. That hit would be the collision into the wall. The reason for use of safer barrier is because unlike tire barriers, they don't make cars rebound back onto the track. I'd look up how they work. 9/10 the cars stay up against the walls after impact. The only times you'll see them bounce off is in Nascar when they hit the wall at a very awkward, one in a million type of angle. Don't be worried. These barriers need to be mandatory at every track. Tire barriers are far more dangerous

Looking forward to the fast blind corners with barriers that kick cars back onto the racing line on slippery, dusty tarmac that will not get sessions red flagged because Masi has shown he has absolutely no idea what he's doing and will put drivers at risk of death with no punishment for people who speed through double yellows when a car is splayed across the circuit. Should be fun (seriously though, F2 is going to be dangerous. The track won't be rubbered in, the drivers haven't driven in two months, the surface will be treacherous and the cars are significantly less safe than F1 cars are. It's probably going to be a procession like all the other narrow street tracks. It looks downright dangerous. Yes, I do know about SAFER barriers and how fantastic they are, but there's no room for following cars to avoid any crashed car that rebounds like there is at the ovals they're usually used at. One t-boning is all it needs to seriously injure or even kill a driver. Just remember Antoine Hubert, and what happened to him as he rebounded in a much wider area. (I know that was a different type of barrier, it's the rebound that scares me. I don't have any problems with any modern safety features, in fact I want more. I don't want a single person, driver or otherwise, to get as much as a scratch in the name of my entertainment!) The lack of overtaking opportunities is what will make it more dangerous, because racers being racers (and this is in _no_ way meant to knock them!), they _will_ try to overtake in bad places if there are no good places to do it. The only time we'll see passes will be on the straight with the aid of DRS, and the top speed of the overtaking car will be ridiculous. I only hope that the brakes hold out. With countries like S Africa waiting to be able to hold a GP - hell, the entire African continent has been waiting since the early 90s (and look how rarely Kyalami has been used _after_ apartheid ended - of course I didn't want them to go there before that) - what does Liberty do? Sign up another cash rich desert country with a small population and barbaric attitudes towards human rights. So much for "we drive as one" and their statements about opening up opportunities to people from every background to work in motorsports. 🤦🏻‍♀️

The Drivers can most of the time only see 2-3 Seconds ahead, If someone spin on a "straight" 4 Seconds ahead of you, u probably have to t-bone the other car or go straight into the barrier with over 250. This Track is too dangerous for a F1 Race. Hope everybody will be save and im wrong. Imagine 2 Drivers fight, crash on a straight and the Cars behind see it very late.

Thank you WTF1 for all your content you put out there to educate us, the mortal ones. I said from the very beginning that I will not watch live any segment of this weekend GP, as a way of protest against the hypocrisy of F1: on one hand they are claiming equality for all, no discrimination, sustainability bla bla, and yet, Saudi Arabia, which is one of the most discriminating country in the world, hosts a Formula 1 grand prix... sad, very sad. F1 should claim: equality, unless contracts say otherwise

The first time I laid eyes on this track I knew it spelled trouble, mainly because the sun and the shade on the track (or better the lack thereof). The sun will warm up this track on no time and getting in the dust on the track will result in sliding and God willing there is some space to recover. That first turn after the start.... if you end up in the middle of the pack you are going to touch or get hit, you cannot simply not fit that amount of cars through that first chicane. Gearbox wise it will be interesting as well, how to gear so that you strike that balance....

Packed with information! Loved it. Didn't know about Qiddiya, but I would miss this track if the race moves there. If so, Formula E could shift here from Ad-diriyah, speaking of which, a comparison between Ad-diriyah and Jeddah Corniche would be great. The Jeddah street circuit looks as tight as a usual Formula E track, not in terms of the high speed nature, but the proximity of the walls.

"Take a look at this track..." Long flat out blasts, the majority of the corners are taken flat and 3 DRS Zones. This is precisely WHY Red Bull are being written off because of that Mercedes Brazil boost. It's tailor made for Merc. Safety Car? No problem, just pick 'em off like Lewis did down towards Turn 4 in Brazil. I would absolutely love for this comment to age horribly, but for now, there you are.
