Lot of good answers here for people willing to take the time to listen. Yeah, some of y'all may think this is "filler" but between the past video comments and discord it feels like these questions come up a million times. Mike's a channel that'll get into the nitty gritty to show how to dive into the unknown, learn, and iterate along the way. And honestly that approach on the 244 helps get a lot of us old subs get our asses into the garage every weekend to work on our own builds. This was never going to be a quick burn because Mike's a one man fab team, same as any of us. He's got Anthony to help film now so it speeds things up vs the old days, but he's far from all the other big channels that have 5-10 guys doing bolt on or light fab mods on a single car in a month. Instead he gets into the weeds and breaks down research and design choices, the same way we would in the garage on a Friday night in uncharted territory. I feel like that's been more valuable to me as a viewer these past few years than any other channel on here has.

Good luck with your projects🤞😎

Direct injection is absolutely not just for efficiency. If you tune DI and port injection to work together, there are huge power benefits as you have so much more control over detonation, chamber temps etc. Overall the throttle and engine performance would be much smoother with good tuning as you can fill in gaps. I prefer the answer of "we dont really know enough about DI so we are going with our knowledge core."
@starfox_wr-45e932 күн бұрын
To add to this, from my (limited) understanding, switching to port injection isn't as easy as it seems. The pistons/engines aren't really set up to run injectors in the runners alone and leads to other issues. Something to do with the piston crowns and combustion area design.. this is way beyond my pay-grade atm to test out, so will be interesting to see how it turns out with somebody else's cash lol

Regarding DI: Efficiency and Emissions are a factor, but it also just gains outright performance as you don't have to force a gas+air mixture through the intake valves, only air. Amongst other benefits. I do disagree on the costs of a system for running DI. I'd expect a few thousand, but less than 10k. Motec M182 should be feasible and is less than $6000. Injectors are probably Marelli, maybe Bosch. I think there's a chance to get the flow curves for these from Marelli/Bosch. If not, there's certainly universities with injection labs that can test that for you for free, if you know who to ask. Rest can then be solved on a Dyno with running at constant speed and load and adjusting the injector calibration until the lambda sensor reads what you expect. I'm an F1 engineer and have previously worked a lot with prototype automotive hardware, including Motec ECUs. Hit me up if you want to have a chat about possibilities. I also have some contacts at relevant companies (e.g. Marelli) that I could point towards your project.
@rickcupola62623 күн бұрын
I also agree with you with DI's benefits, not just for emissions and efficiency. More atomized fuel, more precise fuel injection control, and better BMEP. Many enthusiasts shy away from DI due to the complexity, the lack of power headroom, and mainly the cost of it all

I followed a few interviews of the engineer that designed the F40, Nicola Materazzi, he really had that great spark of passion in his eyes, like you do! So, I believe this is gonna be epic! Materazzi, during one of his storytelling, remembers the first comment that Enzo Ferrari made the very first time he looked to the F40: "I can see a very harmonic and thoughtful placement of all of the components" The art combined with engineering made those cars so special and we are very lucky to still celebrate it today.

Just throwing this out there: it’s a misconception that a Ferrari had a traditional association with the V12, and it didn’t until the late 90’s (550 Maranello). For most of the 70’s-90’s Ferraris were much more closely associated with the flat 12 engine. The F40 for example was designed and produced during the time when Ferrari was producing flat 12 engines, not V12’s. Also keep in mind the F40 was not associated with the big Jesus grand tourer Flat 12 vehicle lineup in the first place, it shared design and DNA from Ferraris compact sports car line that featured a turbo V8 (that was lighter, because race car). In fact the V12 wasn’t even offered in a mid engined Ferrari until the Enzo in 2002, and then again only in the La Ferrari for limited production. All other mid engined Ferrari’s were either flat 12, or V8 afaik (at least the mass produced ones). So it’s technically wrong to associate the V12 as either traditional, or iconic as it was primarily only installed in front engined vehicles until the F140 powered Enzo ->and even then it’s only been mid mounted in limited production sporadically. Edit: and I’ll add that the building of the name and brand of Ferrari was primarily associated with the Flat 12 from 1970- to the late 90’s.
@dwaynepenner27883 күн бұрын
@@drewski5730 Seriously?! While is not wrong there were many iconic V8’s, the cars that made Ferrari brand iconic were the V12’s from the ‘50s and ‘60s; but V12’s were used in road going Ferrari’s continuously from the 1940’s to the 1970’s, including some of the MOST iconic Ferraris like the 250 GT0, Daytona, P4 and the original 250 Testarossa.
@drewski57303 күн бұрын
@@dwaynepenner2788 I would argue that the V12 was nearly dropped from the lineup for the better part of 3 decades during what I would argue was their most iconic period of time when the brand was featured all over print and television media. People noticed when magnum PI, Miami vice, most road test shows, and every car magazine featured the brand in every issue. You are entitled to your own opinion, but the fact is the brand was popularized specifically by the flat 12, not the V12 ->and that makes it traditional.
@drewski57303 күн бұрын
@@dwaynepenner2788 oh, and the majority of those you listed with V12’s were front engined GT cars, NOT mid engines sports or track cars. In fact during the F40’s production run, both for years prior, and years after, I’m pretty sure Ferrari didn’t even have a V12 in production.

You're half-right about direct injeciton. If you're running E85 only, then yes - the extra fuel flow will quickly show the flow limit of the direct injectors, necessitating an upgradee which is not feasible, and it will be more practical and cost-effective to swap to port injectors. However, if you were to retain pump gas, there is no benefit to moving to port injectors on a knock-limited, nasturally-aspirated engine. You will lose the cooling-effect of the DI and will have to lower ignition timing, reducing power. As it's NA, you don't need extra fuel so the swap is pointless. Also, there are MoTeC ECU's that can control direct injection. They aren't "tens of thousands of dollars".
@stanceworks3 күн бұрын
Agreed on all counts, minus MoTeC. A complete MoTeC system is an easy $20,000.

What new skills will I learn?- Being a lawyer and defending lawsuits from Ferarri. Charge one- You have already referred to this car as an F 40 which is a registered name owned by Ferarri.

I’m one of those disappointed the project is more race car than street car 😁 would love to see it kitted out as a modern take on a classic F40. I can live with it tho 😊 not my car, not my project and not my money. Looking forward to the journey 😊

I don't know why so many people are questioning so much The man wants to build a thing That's what men do, it needs no reason, we just like building shit.

Out of all this, I'm glad to hear you get to keep the same location for a little bit longer. Really the stress and headaches, and as you mentioned cost of moving almost makes paying the higher rent justifiable. More importantly, no down time from moving, and no lost parts/misplaced items to worry about!

I am so happy to hear about the Gearbox choice. It will be so fast changing, so fun to use and like to say take control of. And mainly its something that just isn't seen outside racing cars and those rarely get explained like you will show it off and integrating it.

Mike, I really appreciate you for what you’re doing. The whole Stanceworks back in 2009 got me into automotive world and since then it’s been a great experience and a fun trip. Thanks man!

I watched from the start of the 244 gtk and I’ll be here to the end of this one. The F40 has always been a favourite of mine. I like your style, not gonna build this for anything in particular, just the way it needs to be built. Glad it’s gonna be red, blue would be my second choice. Can’t wait to see the frame come together, with the awesome h&r push rod suspension. Happy to watch every episode you bless us with. Thanks Mike

Totally agree with you on the gated manuals. They can be tricky, especially in an intense situation.

Yeah at this point money is no object. Its the passion of the build and how it will turn out. They are not here satisfy audiences requests, they want to just take us on the ride. This is totally amazing.

Mate, I haven’t been around for your other builds the F40 brought me here. Having said that I’m now going through the older stuff. You do you with the decisions/build. Great to see a couple of Aussie companies involved. 👍🏻👍🏻

With regards to the forum, I used to frequent it, and I was only quite a recent subscriber to the channel because I was expecting it to be about stanced lexuses or BMWs all the time. So I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw it's so much more than that and now I'm an avid follower and can't wait to see the F40 journey!

Discussion is Important, but I don’t get how people can question your choices when you are the one provide this amazing of a project and content in the first place. If he’s the one crazy enough and the one who has the time and money to do something this awesome, let him do whatever he wants haha I‘ll watch whatever he does gladly

This channel was suggest d to me for quite some time as you built the 244... I resisted for quite a while also... When I finally gave in I was happy I did and wish I had been following a long the entire time... All of your answers seem well thought over, I like the new build regardless of where it goes, IT'S AN F40! Happy for you on the new lease! But hopefully your channel generates more money so you can be ready when something else comes along

Every car I’ve ever put together I’ve did it for me. You don’t like the colour? Build your own one. Do you want a gated manual? Build your own one. You’re doing this for you, you don’t need to justify anything to anyone.
@paddymotard3 күн бұрын
Great content! Thank you! For discussion sake, one element of having a "true" manual transmission is the ability to completely disengage power through the driveline anytime it is advantageous to do so.

Finally!!!! I’ve been idealizing this car since I was a year old kid. You touched base on two things I’ve been thinking about my whole life. GATED MANUALS REPLACE BUSHINGS, and pop up headlights look stupid on that car. Thank you for being outspoken!
@babyhulk62673 күн бұрын
I understand how some people think the car should be all OEM but with what you are starting with it makes more sense to do what you are doing to go all out and the way you want. If you started with a messed up F40 it would be kinda different depending on the condition but I’m all about custom. Hell I can’t ever leave anything alone, I have to customize everything I get
