Mike’s young-he wasn’t around when these Ferraris were selling for about $12-$15K-with less than 50K miles-when I was in my mid-twenties. The market’s the market. I agree with his mantra: grab a good example, part-out the best pieces and recuperate your costs, fabricate and then elaborate. Great STFU video to the “purist” whiners out there, who didn’t strike when the irons were hot…

yeah, you too should spend all the money on making a car that fails catastrophically the first time you use it...

whaaat? is this still a thing?? for starters, fuck ferraris. they aint that good if good at all. its just branding for some stupid form of ego fuelling thing. nothing more. MAYBE if we were talking about a one of kind car, that won le mans or somthing, with some serious history behind it, or it being super rare.. then i could see ppl getting mad or upset about something like what you did. but this one?, its just a poorly welded hand built tube chassis car with a very underpowered overweighted engine. its not like a special edition v12 jaguar worth a house or anything like that.

It’s great advice, always start a project with the best possible example that you can find. If you can’t find anything good, wait. Be patient.

Agree to disagree, you do you, etc. I will never critique someone's choices, but we all have different skill sets, and perspectives, don't forget that ! I bought the cheapest BMW e24 635Csi I could find, but a complete example. Very rusty, and yes Mike, you can save a very rusty car, but it's a lot of work ! Since 2009 I've had my Bi-Turbo engine, and put many kilometers on it. It's not a show car, it's made for driving !

filler video.. nobody is mad theres one less shitty 308 on the road. they were never great cars to begin with, especially with the terrible 5mph bumpers in the US. while the messaging is good, "buy the best example you can to start" nobody cares about the sacredness of a pos ferrari or the 4banger in it. no real car guy anyways.

This video should be pinned to every message board, facebook group and text message string where anybody is talking about taking on a project car. It should also be the forward of any printed media relating to car projects. I'm probably around 30 deep into my car hobby and had to learn these lessons the hard way - keep spreading the good word. Flip side - I learned most of my skills by starting out with the cheapest hulks I could find and like a lot of expertise, the knowledge is cumulative - skills built on top of other skills. Without my low budget "shouldn't be an issue" attitude, I've managed to acquire skills that I might not have by starting with something just a smidge nicer. Of the 30+ projects though, I've only finished around 12 - mostly due to time. There's something about spending a year repairing a rusty shell that helps you forget why you bought the stupid thing in the first place. I'd love to see a series where two "experts", "Professionals" or "Enthusiast" chat about lessons learned - not necessarily skills or how-to's but stories about process, critical thinking and the problem solving that occurs throughout the process. Excellent video.

I have watched your series on the Ferrari, and there is nothing left of the original car but the shell. Every bit of suspension, fuel system, cooling, wiring etc. are new, so even as you managed to sell off all those original pieces for 30K, you would still have been better off to start with a stripped shell just to save the time, effort and storage. As far as rust and damage go, Ferraris are poorly made and you had to replace as much of the chassis anyway as you would have with a rusty or damaged car. In the end, what do you have? It is no longer a Ferrari, any more than some tube chassis with a Ferrari body attached. Even though you have a title saying Ferrari, in that crazy world of Ferrari owners, you will most likely be ridiculed or even attacked, not to mention the factory which has some crazy and highly guarded ideas about registered trade names etc. Jay Leno says he will not buy a Ferrari because they require you to go through some sort of snooty ownership and acceptance process before they will sell you one.

Initially I was dead agai converting the 308 into a race car. But with all the tech and know how applied I'm a convert. The livery is so awesome. And the work under said livery is frankly spectacular. I Look fwd to the 244gtk getting back on track.

I agree completely on everything, with some caveats. I would be more hesitant to cut up a historically significant car. That said, that bar is high and a 308 or 99% of Ferraris dont count. The rust thing, surface rust on floor pans and body panels is fine. But thats about it. Overall. This random internet dude approves of your project, you get 5 pretend project points! Wahoo!

Disagree on the salvage car. I have owned several, and both I only had to make minor fixes like clock spring, sagging bumper and some missing clips/brackets etc. Both I put a decent amount of mile on and sold them for more than I paid.

Hey Mike, love your work. And you haven’t ruined anything, you’ve actual improved it by a million times. Just the engineering in your Quaife Gearbox trumps anything Ferrari could have achieved in the 80’s. Really any 80’s built Ferrari is a POS, the quality of work back then was horrendous. Yes even the F40’s. Case in point, have a look at the rear subframe welds on an F40. A ten year old could do a better job.

I can tell you from my 1993 Celica GT V6 swap project, fixing the wreck damage (I caused back in 2014) I have been working on the wreck damage since August last year and have only just now started welding panels back to the car! Granted, that's because I am still learning how to weld and I don't have much free time, but starting with a wrecked car puts a BIG hurdle in front of the actual project you plan from the start, because your chasing that "as close to perfect as possible" the entire step of the way! I get it, and I agree, the parts you removed probably saved other GTB's that would have sat for years waiting for good replacement parts if anything from lack of availability in the current new part market of "No Longer Available".
