Hi guys,
welcome back to my channel! As many of you will know, I was myself a German exchange student a few years ago when I decided to study abroad in the United States of America, in Texas to be exact.
I thought it might be fun to let future host families know what to expect when hosting a german exchange student.
Please leave me any open questions down in the comments below :D
Yours,
Laura

Thank you for putting this video together! We are hosting a German girl and she arrives in three weeks. We live near San Francisco and we have lots of plans for her with our family. There were a few things you mentioned that I would not have expected. Like the open conversations about politics and sex. I can be very political, but the other topic I will leave to my wife and daughter. Ha ha! Thanks again for making the video and glad you had a good experience here in America!

Hi Johnny, so glad you decided to host! It will be a very cool experience I'm sure. Your student will probably be shy at first so I wouldn't expect those conversations right off the gate but I do like when they happen because they are such great opportunities to discuss new perspectives

Hello! Just found your channel. I see your channel is from a year ago but still so very relevant! We have just received an emergency placement of a German foreign exchange student. Things were not working out with her host family and the school asked us to take her in for the year. It has only been a few days now but what a blessing! She is so very nice and exactly how you have described! I look forward to watching the rest of your videos to learn as much as I can about this sudden and new experience we are having.

As a member of a Persian-Canadian family I feel like conversations are very open and really nothing is off limit except for extensive sex talk. Sure we'll have conversations to be safe and avoid unexpected things (pregnancies and STDs) but not to really have an entire conversations about say women orgasm. So it was really interesting to know how the family you were hosted by didn't speak about politics for example. Thanks for sharing these btw!

You don’t need to worry, even in Germany we wouldn’t have this detailed kind of conversation about sex with our children. We are going to send our daughter to Canada (B.C.) next summer and the thing I worry about most is her directness which may bother her future host family.

that's good to hear that we're not the only ones. Were you able to identify with any of the other parts as well?

We are hosting a German exchange student starting in august and we are excited. We’ve had several conversations and video chats with him. How would you compare the way boys dress in Germany compared to the US? He also asked about church and he was happy to hear we don’t go regularly. We also live in Texas but in the Dallas Fort Worth area so it’s very different then small town Texas.

Hi, that's so cool. Yes, church is definitely a small town thing! He's glad because going there is probably not something he is used to, nevertheless, maybe you can offer to take him once. Maybe not right away but some time throughout the year. It can be a cool experience. For boys, I would say that Germans wear more skinny jeans. In general, they might appear to be a bit more dressed up and styled. But again, I am comparing it to my experience in small town Texas where boys wear cowboy boots, bootleg jeans, checkered shirts and big buckles. I would say most German boys appear to care a lot more about their appearance and will take longer in the bathroom styling their hair. But again, that depends on the individual. Let me know if my description fits once he gets there :D

Great video! We are hosting a German high schooler in August. We are first time host lives in Arizona. Super excited. Question: our organization said no alcohol but we have alcohol in the fridge. Should we put it away to avoid her breaking the rule? Also which phone company did your host family get you to communicate? We have burn phone(I am not sure if she would like a old phone like that) thank you
@honey27003
@honey27003 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, so glad you decided to host! I don't think you have to put the alcohol away. But maybe don't offer her any. The organization also won't really find out what happens in your home. These rules are just there to protect the students but many rules are broken by host families and the students as long as all parties are fine with it. Concerning the phone: your student will most likely bring their own phone. At Walmart you can usually find sim cards you can insert into the phone. I don't remember which provider I used but it was one of the standard ones where I payed for the contract monthly and was able to use the phone I brought from home.

I wouldn't that sex is such a common topic for a family dinner. I mean it's not like we avoid talking about it but it's not such a usual topic.😂

One more thing to consider with respect to religion and going to church: about 40% of Germans don't have a religion at all

Desires are things we not yet master. The only way to process them is to engulf yourself in them and learn everything about them and get tired of it; get it out your system so to speak. Everyone is at different levels in their development, so be humble and helpful.

That’s cool, but Germans tend to believe in the catholic or Christian religion, and it’s not forbidden there.

As a student who really wants to go on an exchange year trip this was helpful, too! I now know that Americans are not used to some things and can maybe adjust a bit better. Even though I was planning on going to Australia 🥹
