Hi! Idk if you still active but since I’m questioning myself I'll leave a comment. I’m kinda anxious about going back in my country cuz I have good memories about how my family dynamic/life was but I perfectly know that he wont never be the same it’s really disturbing… do u have anymore advice?

I wish my family had at least ask their daughters if they were okay with hosting me… they didn’t. Making the whole tougher.

Two years old, but ... no house key? That sounds very strange to me. I don't understand why they wouldn't give you a key - you're part of the family while you're in the house, so that makes no sense to me. There may be some reason for it, but it's not typically what Americans would do.

We are hosting a teen right now. She showed no interest in anyone we introduced her. Tons of teenagers that we know and she said she didn’t have anything in common with them. She made friends with only kids from her own country. She pushed and not obeyed any curfews. Very rude to us and kids. Rejected all information so she can have initiative in things. Also she feels she does too much at home, and we just ask her to clean up after herself and clean up dinner dishes. I think one thing exchange students NEED to learn before going anywhere, is that they need to respect the home and know that there are different rules in place. It took a lot of talking and stress to get to the point that we can finish the school year.

I am an International Exchange Coordinator ( a person trained to bring students to the US and find host families) from Ohio and just stumbled upon your video. You have done an excellent job on this video and it is the same advice I would have given!! I would add that students should NOT exchange currency at the airport and they should try to use Applepay if possible! There sometimes are issues with credit cards but Applepay almost always works!!! That would be a great subject for another video. Can I share this with my students for next year and other IEC’s? ( by the way - your English is excellent!!!)

Girls please remember: girls mature faster than boys do. I don't know why, but as a former boy, I can assure you it's true. Generally, it's better for girls to date up a year, to find a boy who's at the same maturity level. And of course, don't be afraid to lay down the law on boys and let limits. Maybe you may change your mind later, but establish boundaries - if a boy doesn't like it, pass him by.

Opinions: my late father told me "Never talk politics or religion." When he meant was, don't do it in casual, friendly situations. You're just creating the possibility of conflict when you could have had a nice interaction. In social situations, you aren't going to convince anyone, and they aren't going to convince you, so why bother? Find the best in people, even if you differ strongly in one particular way.

I'm right now in a host family in the US. In my case, I'm an exchange teacher, not student. I really see now how important it is to treat everyone the same. My host family has had many exchange teachers. They keep talking about some of them. And they seemed to have had fun. But we barely do things together. That makes me feel akward

I have heard similar things from a former gf. She also found out there were bets on who "got" her first, which to me feels extremely foreign, insulting, and actually a bit demeaning to the girl and those betting, but I guess it depends on how much emphasis you place on this. You sound like you have a clear mind and good control of your emotions, so this probably (perhaps), did not hurt you.
