This is game changing for lite gamers that want to test the PC gaming waters. For $400 you can get a machine more powerful than ps4 hardware, and its portable. For a little more, you can get a large micro SD card and get gaming. Best of all, unlike EVERY other portable today, it does not throttle power when in handheld. Laptops and even the switch run slower if not plugged into power/docked. This does not. Good graphics all the time.
@TheTaxxor2 жыл бұрын
Yes it doesn't throttle power when in handheld, but you could also say it like they throttled it from the start so it doesn't use the additional power when docked. The APU would probably be fine running 20-25W when docked if they designed the cooling that way, making it possible to run 1080p in docked mode with the same performance as 800p in handheld. I'm curious if you could just use Ryzen Controller on the Steam Deck to change the TDP above 15W manually.

@@erikreider That's what I hoped to hear^^ In fact, we know you can control TDP and clockspeeds through the SDs UI but I don't know if you can just go from 5W to 15W or if you're allowed to go higher if you want. Doing this directly in the UI would be a great usability benefit.

The people who liked Steam controllers and Steam Links still have them and use them, so the fact that they might have been a financial flop for Valve doesn't hurt users. This is a great introduction video for someone who's not heard of the Deck before. One inaccuracy you really ought to change is that the top tier model doesn't have an anti-scratch screen (though screen protectors are already available.) It's a special anti-glare micro-etched screen like the one offered on Apple's Pro Display XDR. Whilst it'll make it look even better for fans of matte displays, it won't make the display of the top model more scratch resistant (if anything, it'll be a little more delicate than the other two models). That is unless you're making an announcement that it also has extra scratch resistance that Valve hasn't previously discussed.

A lot of these people use lapboards or whatever they're called too so they can still use keyboard/mouse. Or they'll just relax, care less about performance, and use a normal controller. For deck it's perfect though since it is a convenience device due to its form factor. Games that require enhanced accuracy will benefit from the touch pads and games that require a certain feel that touch pads can't offer will benefit from the analog sticks. Win Win

I plan on trying either a 1tb 2230 nvme from a Microsoft surface pro (have one laying around don't ask) and possibly looing into making a 3D printed back or modding the existing back to get a even higher capacity nvme working. I do plan on dual booting Steam OS and Windows 10 and that's my primary reason for wanting more storage. Also I'm sure I'm not the only person thinking of a case mod to add a 2280 and even making room to add a heatsink. Although that would add a massive bump to the back and add a lot more heat internally. You could also make it semi-external so it could be more or less passively cooled as long as you didn't block the airflow since the intake ducts are right over the stock nvme. Also the external nvme would actually remove heat from inside the case and give the VRM, ram and APU fresh cool air. Hmm so many idea's. Just hope I preordered early enough to get mine in the first batch!

Steam supports all those controllers. The only problem (at the moment) are a few games that don't have an option to choose a controller, because the Steam Deck is the first controller, that's "plugged in" - you can plug in a Xbox controller for example, but that's recognized as an additional controller for player 2.

Yes, Yes (LTT showed Witcher from Netflix in his eraly hand on), but no Game Pass (because Microsoft decided to make Game Pass Windows exclusive with no way to make it portable. Maybe they change their mind). But xCloud is a thing if you have good internet.

Steam Link was a game streaming box and those type of devices haven't been adopted by the masses. Many have tried, now have been widely adopted. Steam Link's failure wasn't surprising. Steam Machines were 3rd party machines. They were crappy overprice gaming PCs with the Steam branding. That failure had more to do with their manufacturers rather Valve. The lesson Valve learn there was do it yourself and don't rely on others. Steam Controllers were actually loved by users and its discontinuance had more to do with patent disputes.

Good points all. The Steam Link was not very well optimized, and only supported up to 1080p (in my experience, with lots of lag even over 1g ethernet). That they discontinued support for a product that wasn't widely used isn't too surprising, but the lack of capability justifies the lack of desirability. I have 2 Steam Controllers and lament that they're not making more generations. Despite the valid reasons Steam has made the decisions not to support their hardware platforms, at the end of the day they have a track record of manufacturing a bunch of hardware and then moving on. Which I admit does make me hesitant to drop $400+ on a platform that could potentially also have issues that ultimately don't get resolved.
@Sela21252 жыл бұрын
I don't think I'll order one of these, but I'm very excited by the products I'm seeing in this space. With Covid being a thing I haven't traveled as much as I wish, but I'm hopeful that the world will go to some version of normal sooner or later. Having a device that I can play PC games on at a pleasing resolution and framerate while on a plane, train or hotel room somewhere sounds great to me. With games being enormous these days though, I would want more storage and I would prefer a screen without that thick, black frame around it.

Just wait 4 years and you will get your wish. Steam Deck OLED version with thin bezels.......sounds familiar?......hmmmmm It is more economicaly beneficial for any company to release a version with last year's tech so you would "UPGRADE" to the newer version. This way they would make money from the same people more than once. If they had put in every possible current Gen tech on this they would not make as much. Sound familiar? What I really wonder is how does the touchscreen work for games? Does a game need to be coded by the dev to make use of it? (I assume so) or can it simulate mouse cursor too? Thinking of They Are Billions, RTS or even a visual novel (does tapping the screen advance the game or does it do nothing).
@onhold17062 жыл бұрын
By the sound of it, the touchscreen will simulate mouse input and allow you to use it in place of one in some cases, but I imagine it will also include the ability for devs to give it dedicated features or remap it to a specific input through Steam Input.

The "after Q2 2022" is just Valve's way of telling you that they have no idea when. I reserved a unit the day after they began taking reservations and initially got a Q2 2022 date. It remained that date up until they announced the launch would be pushed back from December 2021 to Feb 2022 and my estimated date went from a more defined Q2 2022 to a nebulous "after Q2 2022". Assuming their queue system is as they say, the probable quarter for my reservation to be filled is Q3 2022. It was delayed a quarter so makes sense it would be pushed back a quarter. No telling how many have reserved since when I reserved and now. People who reserved months after I did probably shouldn't expect theirs until 2023 would be my guess. If you're reserving one now this late in the stage, I doubt you'll see your unit until 2024 or later. The unknown is if Valve is able to mass produce them or not. With things being what they are, I have my doubts that they can and my estimation above is probably being generous.

@@staffie85 The way they have it setup is what concerns me. It looks like they have an order over the weekend and process and ship out during the week, in batches. I was one who ordered once first announced. If it fails (and this one I don't think will because of the price points), I can drop Steam OS and Install a Emulation Station front end, and be able to emulate up to PS3, Switch and even 360 games (by the specs, it should be able to handle them with no problems).... Also, if you keep a internet connection (Who does not have a phone with hotspot features these days??), can you stream games, like Xbox Series, or other streaming services. If I just hate it, Selling for everything I paid for it, will be an easy task. A LOT to be excited about if you like the idea of taking games portable and everything you can think of with you... Nice review for the people do don't know much.
