if they can make powerful hardware at a competitive price point it could become a titan in the console industry. People that have never gamed on a PC will be able to get all the advantages with basically none of the things they don't like about the platform. It could be very, very, VERY big. We'll have to wait and see but I think the jump from what they were trying to do with Steam Machines and what they actually did with the Deck is going to be very telling. I'd be excited to see a Steam set-top box under lock in a Walmart with a kid begging his parents for one.

I'd imagine they will be able to take a pretty significant loss on the hardware since it funnels everyone into the steam store. They could legitimately create an apple like ecosystem for gaming. All you steam devices communicate. You take your games and progress wherever you play. Your couch, your desktop and on the go.

I like the idea of Steam building an inexpensive base model that includes an eGPU IO like USB4 for those who would like to add a more powerful option themselves. Or, Valve could also develop their own GPU/storage docking station that could be an additional purchase. If they can keep a base model under $500 USD while also leaving open performance and storage expandability, I think that units would sell like crazy. I would certainly be all in on one.

If they release a heavy raytracing compatible console, they could easily rival Sony and Xbox. There already are a few games that do raytracing on the Deck, the lack of optimization is what makes it near impossible to run this feature. Most game devs would be more open to targeting Steam OS if this feature was easy to work on a console. If Cyberpunk 2077 could work on a system like this with psycho mode raytracing (it works at around 60 fps at DLSS 3.5 on a 4060), most game devs would see it as a worthy game hardware target. As great as Steam Deck is with optimization, if raytracing could work with far less optimization for a Steam console, it would just be another target that devs could test and support. If Valve gets a console to work with unoptimized raytracing at 30 fps, but you could optimize it to 60 fps, it would mean that companies could target SteamOS more without worrying about lack of optimization as much. Consoles always like to flex newest generation features, and Valve could easily join that team. I just hope they aren’t quick to release a console like this, because if we can get as new a generation console as possible, most would gladly jump to only using Valve’s. I’m tired of how games aren’t well supported past their initial release, and with how good emulation is getting, a console would be that perfect hardware answer to people who want to play their Steam Deck like a traditional gaming console. It would be so much fun to boot up Master Chief collection with the splitscreen mod and play this game as I did for years. Sure, can I do this on a Deck, yes, but I’d much rather the experience of a dedicated console so that when I buy controllers, it’s intended for Steam’s console alone (instead of me back and forth re-syncing controllers).

Yeah I just hope Valve with steam console or steam box or what ever they call it. Has proper GDDR6 Vram with at least 256 bit bus. A zen 3 8c/16t with RDNA3 should be more then enough for 1080p or 1440p/60 capable box. Also hope has more one hdmi but prob not. I hope they just don’t put out just box that slight better then steam deck, using amd APU with DDR5 or 5x only memory. System memory is no where close to bandwidth of Vram like GDDR6. It’s fine for smaller mobile/hand held device. But not when want desktop performance. You need proper Desktop Vram. Very excited for steam os come to desktop pc. Just hope has proper GTX drivers. Cus I’m still using GTX 1080ti. Too broke to upgrade to 6900xt, which still $900+ Canadian last I looked. And 3090 is still like $2000 lol nope. We need steam os before windows 10 EOL happens. As ms continued to bully push bloated windows 11 down everybody throat. Imo they should be SUED for forcing window 11 onto everybody. As other have said. Steam machines failed Cus, anybody bought steam machine, was on there own trying figure out how run windows games under linux. It was horrible, the avg users wouldn’t know how and few games did run, prob ran bad. Now this time Valve created os from ground up for gaming, they have Vulkan.api (which is superior to DX 12) and it will translate many DX 10/11/12 games to run under linux thanks to proton. Which is Vulkan. They didn’t have Vulkan before so that’s was one main reason steam mechine failed. This time steam deck is poof it works. They have software and know how build better hardware and now they have os that can Challenge windows directly, often play many window game even better. Steam machines didn’t have any of that. That why it failed. Yes we need somebody else to compete against both Microsoft/Sony and even Nintendo.

I don't think it's going to cost "a couple thousand". I think they are going to aim for 1 SKU at first, see how it goes, then potentially have better models in the future. It will be a loss-leader, and need to be cheap to manufacture. The more SKUs there are, the more expensive it might be. I hope they will aim for something that is AT LEAST 60 fps 4k in most games, but that would be a stretch if you want it to be cheap. It would be great if it could at least upscale to 4k 60fps. They want as many steam consoles, in as many houses as possible, to sell all the games to make Steam more of a household name for people without PCs to game on. I think they learned their lesson with their first VR headsets. They made the best headset, but didn't sell more than meta, who had a simpler headset that was cheaper. More people will buy something that is cheaper, compared to something more expensive that is the best. They will start with something cheaper, that works well. Then they might expand. That would be the smartest thing to do, and that's what I think they will do.
