Evangelion is really one of the greatest anime. I am not very into anime, but Eva was the first anime I watched completely.The music, characters, story really made the show resonate with me. The show ending, and End of Evangelion ending are polar opposites in terms of how they end. But there is an important life lesson in both of them which I will forever hold with me.

I used this song as the soundtrack as my own personal soundtrack for a series of failed relationships. It was a song so personal I dared not share it with others. I thought I was incapable of love, even though I went into these with zero prior experience. In reality there was at least one person who did love me, and I was the one projecting these feelings on others out of anxiety and fear. So the only person who couldn't love me, was me. I still think that love is exactly as describe in this song; effortless and instinctual as breathing for most of the population, equally as unnatural to me. And then there is the way that Arianne sings this; in a very sympathetic, yet matter of fact tone. Its almost therapeutic in a way.

My guess is they figured that Thanatos worked better thematically for the credits. Than after that in terms of having a song for Third Impact from a musical standpoint Komm Susser Todd just works better in the sense that it has just enough gravitas to fit what's happening in that scene. Now, I'm gonna disagree with the previous replies in saying that LYRICALLY this actually fits better in terms of conveying what Shinji is thinking, feeling lied to and used by Asuka, Rei and Misato for different reasons and feeling like he wanted to just be apart from humanity with the scene culminating in Shinji literally trying to squeeze the life out of Asuka. But that said, I can't imagine this working musically over third impact. It's just too chill lol.
