I have clear saucers under everything and I water the plant until the saucer is full. I leave it there and go back about an hour later. If there’s water that the plant hasn’t soaked up, I empty. I use a very bulky aroid mix so water goes right through. This allows the soil to soak up as much water as possible. I’m in very low humidity area, so this seems to help.

Morning Jeff. Thank you for all the watering tips. Your Potsii is gorgeous. The teeny tiny leaf reminds me of my Macrophylla/Latifolia ones. When is your next Hoya video? Edit: You know for your medium to large pots like the Brazil you could use these black container some restaurant use for take out. On days you do not want to take the plant down from the shelf you could Just slide it under the pot, water generously ; the saucer will catch the excess and the plant will suck it up slowly. Just a thought 🙂

Hey Jeff! Another great video!🌴......I have a couple of questions...I may have misunderstood you. Sometimes I have bottom watered several plants in the same container or bathtub at the same time. Is that what you mean when you said it was controversial? Is that something you suggest we avoid doing? 2). I am afraid to stick my water meter or a bamboo too far down for fear of cracking the roots like you accidentally did here. Do you think the roots repair themselves if that happens? Looking forward to your recommendations! Thank you!🌴💛
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
The controversial part is something like using the same water from a plant that has fungus gnats or something unseen in the soil. There is always a chance of that cross contamination if you use water for multiple plants. I do it all the time and never had an issue.....for bottom watering and soil flushes like I should. I don't worry about it, but I just don't want to give out bad advice or practices

@@EverythingPlants I definitely noticed with my calatheas, freaking drama queens. But you did just remind me, the guy on CBC radio garden chronicles (Alberta at noon on fridays) mentioning that the central alberta water table is very high in sodium and that itself prevents the soil from absorbing moisture (was related to outdoor watering ). According to a horticulturist friend, that sodium retention would also apply to unglazed clay pots (which i generally dont use). Probably explains why i havent had that problem pop up with the overall jungle but am still having issues with that one marantha that only gets R/O. Good points to ponder for sure! Your videos are getting more awesome by the day! Keep it up!

Thanks so much! I use terracotta for alot of my houseplants and it's good to wipe off the mineral buildup and FLUSH the soil from time to time. I generally do this in the spring when I can take my plants outside and spray them off good.

I fined that the water from the tap, not Britta filter or anything similar still works for me, also I have noticed that some plants react different and prefer not to receive my normal tapwater and like filtered water, example: my spider plant, I have one and the filtered water from our fridge works way better for it and prevents the browning of the leaves.

I did the same for a golden pathos that I inherited. During the winter u-haul move it semi froze. Most of the leaves were so damaged that I propagated what leaves it had left and gave it a buzz hair cut. I got the same results. It’s huge now. I’m so glad because it was my mom’s.

@@EverythingPlants, I know. I figured it would be a loss cause I thought since it was a big plant to begin with that it would need at least some leaves to photosynthesize, but nope. I just did the same with a micans just last week that was hit with fungus (I think). I'm hoping for the same results.

I do something very similar! I have a deep plastic tray that I put the plant in. I then fill the tray 1/2 full with my enhanced water (liquidirt). I put the plant’s saucer into scalding hot water with a couple drop of dish soap in the sink to sanitize while my plant drinks. Depending on the plant, I leave it in the tray for 10-45 minutes while I get others ready for their turn. My peace lily wants to stay way longer than, say, pothos. Especially the pots in terracotta. I like to leave them til pot seems wet most of the way up. I will say, however, that I also use mosquito bits in my water along with bonide bits on top. Some of my pots have hydrophobic soil, so I do have do top watering along with the bottom watering. I know it seems complicated, but this way, I’m examining each plant every time. If the plant is one that’s pretty susceptible to pests, I’ll usually take to the shower to spray with insecticidal soap or Capt Jack’s every other week.

Such a mean plant daddy😂. I let my pots sit in the overflow water a bit before I recycle back in. Some of my freshly repotted plants cause this water to discolor so I have been pouring that out just in case there was something yucky in it. I just got some Superthrive. Isn’t this the same type of thing as Liquidirt? Like you can use it with the fertilizer for some extra vitamins?

Hey Jeff, I actually do something similar to what you were saying about collecting the water that drains out and reusing it. For my plants in chunky mix or orchid pots where it drains fast, I water them in a bowl and let the plant sit in the bowl to resoak some of the water that drained out. And usually there is still water left, so I'll use it on another plant! I feel confident because all my plants are treated with systemic pesticide, I've never had any pest problems doing this 😁
