I've started my jade plant from cuttings probably 20 years ago, but I never knew that I could control the number and direction of the branches! I have been growing jades for most of my life and never knew I could prune or direct how it grew until now. I had been staking my weak and leggy plants as they grew longer and longer. After watching a few of your jade how-to's, I can now say that I have successfully removed the staking and ties, pruned up, repotted in cactus/succulent medium and excited to see how I will train my jades from now on. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge! 🙂

Three years ago I bought a small pot with three plants with lovely trunks in it. I've nurtured it, and it is doing well, and I now want to split each tree into its own pot and shape them. The problem I have is when I prune, half the time no new leaves grow. I have stumpy areas where nothing has grown in. It's maddening and I wish I knew why this happens all the time. Also, how long before the trunks thicken up from cuttings? I've some from a friend's plant from 4 years ago, that grow up, but get no thicker. This one has been a challenge. I remember my grandmother's Jade that she was given in the late 1800s (yes, you read that number correctly) as a birthday present from a family member. It was in a very small planter, kept on a window sill, and it was the 'mother' of so many plants. A cousin took it in 1982 when my grandmother passed away at the age of 98, and it was still going strong even after it was 100 years old. Now that I actually have a situation with plenty of sun, I am determined to grow some lovely jades in memory of Nana.

Thank you, you have helped me so much! I was totally afraid to prune my jades. They were leggy and falling over and growing in crazy directions- but I was afraid to kill them. Your video helped me prune and shape with confidence and trust that they would grow back healthier and prettier. It was so cathartic, and they look so much better! A year later, it's Spring again...and I am watching your video all over again to refresh. Very clear instructions and I am so grateful.

Very helpful. Especially the part where you showed that you pruned one stem so the new shoots will grow out left/right, and the next stem so the new shoots will grow out front/back. Makes perfect sense but I never thought about it. I successfully got my jade to do some branching out last year, and I think I'm not going to trim it anymore until it gets much bigger. I don't know why pruning my jade is so hard! Ive been up to it with shears 4 times now, maybe more! I go to do it, chicken out, walk away.. repeat.. In the end I cut one peice off yesterday and I might as well have been cutting off my own finger with the amount of contemplation I gave it! It needs more pruning but I needed a sit down after lol I love jade plants, so forgiving, easy to care for, easy to propagate, nice green shiney leaves. just pretty plants! 💚 Thanks for the video and the added courage 😂
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 жыл бұрын
It's terrifying to prune them the first time and even a few times after that haha. I think you honestly did the right thing and just start small (assuming you've never pruned it before) so you can see how it responds. Just me, it never gets easy with a hard prune and afterwards I'm like "what have I done" and then three week later you see beautiful new growth and can breathe again 🤣

@@EverythingPlants It's the only plant I have because I don't like unaliving them. lol I wish pictures could be shared on YT. When I got it they said repot in a year. It's been 6 months. It's in a small in a 3" high pot. The center stem has grown to 5 1/2" tall from the top of the pot. 3 stems, the 2 on the outsides are leaning in a V the taller it gets. I'm thinking the growing will slow down now and I can repot in the spring. Is that what you would suggest? Or do I have to trim it...gasp? Or can I use a tie to support it? Sorry for so many questions. I understand it's hard to say without seeing it. PS I was told it is a Crassula not Jade.

I was glad to hear you sand spring and SUMMER. My jades are overdue, haven't been pruned in several years, and it's mid June. In past prunnings, I ended up with way more cuttings than I could handle. I gave some away to family members who now have more than they want. I hate to dispose of them. Maybe offer them on craigslist? Propagating is easy peazy. Maybe too easy. I could open a jade plant business if there were people willing to adopt them.

@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 6 ай бұрын
Hello. When the plant needs water I will also spray off the leaves. This is good to keep them free of dust, but also blasts off pests if there is any. Just make sure you have adequate airflow so the water evaporates off the leaves

Awesome, how many stem cuttings did you put in that sense pot in the middle? Will you treat it like one plant when you come to repot?
@EverythingPlants

I think there is about 7 or 8 stem cuttings in that pot. I will let it grow into more of a bush like form....very similar to my old large Jade with multiple stems in one pot.

What should I consider doing first? Transplanting or pruning? I don’t want to shock my plant. I THINK they (4-5 smaller, but tall and leggy plants) could remain in the pot for another year or so (especially after seeing how crowded your young plants are). Thoughts? Also, I appreciate how “drastic” your cuts are: it is a bit “freeing” knowing how, where, and how much I can cut and not ruin my plants. Thank you!

approximately how long did it take for the stem cuttings to root and did you lose any leaves in that time? I planted a stem cutting a few weeks ago and was concerned it might not root but this video has given me a lot more hope for it
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 3 жыл бұрын
Hello. It might take a couple weeks to grow roots. I only water a very small amount in that time so the stem doesn't rot. I just took a cutting for a friend recently and almost all the leaves got extremely wrinkly and I didn't know if it would survive or not. I gave the stem a tug and it was rooted nicely so I gave it a good watering and now all the leaves thickened up back to normal.

I'd left some cuttings out over winter, might have been 4 or 5 months (literally just sat in a pot of gravel) and they had small root systems without watering (I meant to throw them away). Very tough to kill and if the leaves shrivel up, they soon become plump after a thorough watering

@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I use about an 1/8 of a small watering can with hydrogen peroxide then diluted with water. Water as you normally would and it will kill off any gnat larvae. Then use the yellow sticky traps to catch the adult ones. In a few weeks you should definitely see a decrease in those pesky buggers.

Hi there! I’m not sure if you’re still active on this post, but I have a question if you have the time? After you put your pruned stems into a new pot and grow them, how long do you wait to start pruning those? Will they all grow as separate plants or will they eventually ‘merge’ and form one larger tree-like jade like yours? Thank you for this video, it was so helpful ❤

I inherited an overgrown jade tree that has been allowed to grow up and flop in all directions. I’ve used your video to provide me with the courage to prune. It’s appearance was about 12” but IF I could have erected the branches, it would have doubled that. I’ve clipped-off 13 branches from the main trunk! Over the next few weeks, I’ll be gently straightening the clippings and observing the tree. Should I fertilize the tree?

This is my GO TO jade pruning/prop video. I saved it, because I get so nervous every time it's time to manicure the ones I have. It's not often, 😂 so I forget details or seemingly lose confidence in the process. But this is just such a helpful reminder/refresher that 'I GOT THIS' 😂. Everything went so well last year I am trimming back a couple from that year's prop too! I kinda put it off a little this year and my oldest, and first leaf sewn jade from a couple years ago got real top heavy. I hacked away resulting in several new lil jade stems... Tad bummed out, almost took it down to a pile of leaves because I had forgotten that stocks will root too... Though small there are many. 😂 I only hope one year I can get through a chill haircut, and not be all Edward Scissorhands, and rooting from scratch. If it takes 10-30 years to have a dense lil tree, I gotta get this trunk going....
