I genuinely think he's got a couple solo sections (the suona for Wukong for instance) that are baked in and otherwise he's allowed to just kinda do whatever he wants. Because, like... what psychopath scores for a contrabass flute? Nobody asked him to bring that last year, he probably just said "by the way, I'm bringing a contrabass flute" and they just went "okay, I guess we've got a contrabass flute section now."

Fun Fact: Pedro Eustache, a master flautist, played also a significant role in the Dune soundtrack. Hans Zimmer, the composer, gave him the unique instruction to play the flute as if it were the wind whistling through the desert dunes of Arrakis. This direction was part of Zimmer's vision to create an otherworldly soundscape, perfectly capturing the essence of the desolate yet majestic environment of Dune

Hans Zimmer wrote the theme for the game awards after all and was even there to play it the first time back in like 2019 or something. And Lorne Balfe (the composer here) worked and learned from Hans Zimmer so it makes sense.
