And to think, a small scratch on a single trace that oxidized over time caused this. Amazing diagnosis and repair!

This type of behavior is really annoying especially when it comes to RMA because they may not detect the crash when you send it in therefor you end up having to RMA multiple times until they test it more thoroughly.

Just to mention one thing: The AND gate probably isn't damaged. If the trace was split the input was floating. Floating inputs tend to result in a logic high state. You can't measure this leakage current with your multimeter. Even the megohm of input resistant is basicly a short-circuit for this gate input. This is why, on an engineering perspective, you say: Never let gates floating, unused inputs should be set to low or high by pulling them to ground or VCC. The effect here was the "radio sensitivity" (EMI) of this floating pin. The high-value is so incredible unstable, a little EMI spike on the right point may trigger a low level, so the card gets reset. Since this only affect the GPU the driver crashes right after (or end up in a dead-lock) and therefore the whole PC. So I am pretty sure the only problem was the copper trace. Unless you checked the gate by pulling the input low. You didn't mentioned this in the video. So ignore my comment if you did.

I would guess that why some cards start to function after being thoroughly cleaned. Without proper lighting and preferably a microscope you easily miss corrosion like that. Another reason might be the oily liquid that tends to accumulate with old thermal pads. I’ve had cards where I would blow compressed air under the memory bgas and they would work again. Top notch content 👌

CAN that not always be the case and some other shorted component is pulling current through the cpu making it look like its shorted? I have so many laptop boards with hot cpus with say 3-4 amps and i cant find anything else hot. so is that it, a BAD CPU ONLY or Northbridge or GPU Chip ect? I have an EVGA RTX 2080 Ti, but it has the single fan instead of the dual fan like this one. Mine is doing about the same thing as the one in this video, but after it crashes, it boots in low resolution and the GPU in device manager shows orange exclamation triangle next to it. Also, it will sometimes give me artifacts, blue screen that says TDR failure, and something about the nvlddmkm but I cant remember. device manager will windows stopped the device with code 43 after a crash and reboot into low res. I dont know what the issue is with mine, but the card back plate does seem kind of warm for no load on it. Temps look good in hardware monitor, so I suspect it is a reball issue or some other component is failing and heating up the back plate. Do you have any ideas of what the issue might be with my card? Any tests or programs I can do to narrow down? I have gpu z as well if that helps

Question: how does the AND gate know to pass the 1.8V vs the 3.4V. AND gate shows both A and B inputs as connected/switched to the output Y. Is VCC actually what's passed through the swich and A+B are just gate voltages?
@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies3 жыл бұрын
Yes, A and B are just gate voltages. The output is powered by VCC. Nothing is "passed through" to Y from A or B. To put it another way: If A and B are both above a predetermined threshold voltage (e.g., 0.7V), then Y is driven high to VCC. Otherwise, Y is driven low to VSS (ground). Hope that helps.
@bluethumbdiy47353 жыл бұрын
@@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies That makes sense. VCC is 1.05V but I assume some of that is consumed and that's why the output on Y is 0.79V?
@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies3 жыл бұрын
7:10 this is how an AND gate should work in this circuit. VCC should always be 1.8V, and Y should always be 1.8V unless you're pressing the Reset button (in which case, Y will be 0V). Any other readings and something is wrong.
@bluethumbdiy47353 жыл бұрын
@@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies On a 980TI, which is what I'm working on, there is no 1.8V rail. The 900 series Nvidia use 1.05V and 3.3V for control signals. When the 1.05V VCC goes into the logic gate, it comes out ~0.79V via Y. It seems low.

@@accurian148 when i said trace it i actually meant trace continuity, you are using a screwdriver to short the pins yes? firstly i would check the soldering underneath the header pins, in fact id drop new solder on the header, once you have eliminated continuity along the chain, id simply reheat/reflow the controller chip using some flux and a hot air gun, its shocking how many problems this method fixes its highly unlikely the controller chip has failed just on reset, and much more likely a cracked solderball or bad solder joint in the chain, or some dirt or liquid, maybe even a quick dip in an ultrasonic machine if you have access to one, there are many things to check before deciding to swap a chip of course you could always just upgrade your test bench
