Eddie Van Halen is known for infusing his iconic guitars with their own identity. With his visionary hands-on approach to personally modifying his style and tone, Eddie has created some of the most memorable guitars in rock ‘n’ roll history!
One of those guitars became as iconic to Van Halen’s sound as tapping was to Eddie’s playing. Aptly named the “Shark,” Eddie took his angular offset axe and sawed a chunk out of the body, leaving jagged edges in the wood that resembled teeth. After applying a coat of silver paint, Eddie added tape in his famed striped pattern and then grabbed a rattle can of burgundy Schwinn bicycle paint to finish the job. The final striped creation was initially seen live during the first Van Halen World Tour in 1978, but became more widely known and adored by fans after appearing on the back cover of Van Halen’s 1980 album, Women and Children First!

There’s an interesting factoid associated with the shark. While building this guitar, Eddie took the ceramic magnet out of the Super Distortion pickup in his Destroyer and replaced it with the bar magnet from a PAF. This is essentially how Seymour Duncan’s JB pickups were invented.

I have one, had it for a year now. Can’t speak to the original, but I guarantee that whatever was wrong with the original was fixed. Has massive sustain with the pickups installed, comfortable to play, was setup out of the box with very low action. One of my top two guitars. My go to in D#

It amazed me when it came out that Ed mostly used the Destroyer on VH1. Like many, we just assumed that an iteration of the Frankie was used on everything. It is funny though, that his experiment went awry but it did lead to further evolution of the Frankie. I prefer the Kramer 5150 and would get a replica of one of those first, but I would almost take the Shark over a Frankie as the next choice to add to my collection.

Eddie was inventive. This is a gift. Not everything works out. Thomas Edison took 10,000 times to make the light bulb. Eddie's inventive creativity carried over to his playing makes him one of the greatest of all time. Number 2 after Jimi, who was completely creative too.

i’m definitely going to get an evh guitar one day, whether it’s the frankie (which it likely will be) or a wolfgang or one of the 5150 because they are so cool, all of the Van Halen gear is. i bought the EVH flanger about a year ago and it’s easily cooler than the regular 117 flanger and i swear it’s because of the paintjob 🤟🏻🤟🏻

Ah the shark, an Ibanez Destroyer that was hacked up :) I've got an ibanez les paul from that era that I pulled the super 70's pickups from. Saw it hanging on the wall behind Dagan during some vids wondered why he hadn't used it, being the Eddie fan he is. Honestly the one thing about it I don't like is that the finish is sorta metallic? It doesn't have that instant flash of a 5150 or Franky.

According to Ed , he used his Les Paul for most of the songs without a whammy bar . And the toggle switch flipping was his Les Paul on " You Really Got Me " .

I'm pretty sure i read years ago, Eddie said he actually had to unplug and plug the guitar back in on that, it wasn't actually a toggle switch because the switch wasn't wired

I have a telecaster with a humbucker in the bridge, but removed the neck pickup and I flick the selector switch it does it like a kill switch. Also when I push down on the tone knob it does a kill switch effect

The guitar used on women and children first is Chris holmes Ibanez destroyer. Chris was in a motorcycle crash and Eddie dropped by to see him in hospital and asked if he could use his destroyer. Chris obviously said yes. As for the Shark it was only used for the album cover...

I have a theory that the sound of the guitar changed because of the different pickups and new pots he installed instead of cutting all the wood away. I would love to see someone look at that. Is the shark still around? How cool would it be to put some period correct Ibanez humbuckers in and see what it sounds like.

It was the cut in the guitar, he ran multiple different pickups through it after he hacked into the guitar

you probably aren't wrong. with the experiments that Jim Lill has done on youtube recently, it's quite clear that hacking the body wouldn't have changed the guitar in an amplified state. Eddie did play his guitars unplugged a lot, and probably noticed a change in tone acoustically. There was probably more neck dive afterwards, which could have contributed to his "dislike" for the guitar. He frequently "disliked" guitars, yet still played them for several albums and tours. The bumblebee was another one he famously didn't like, yet it was the main guitar for the 79 and 80 tours, along with being the primary floyd rose guitar on Women and Children First. I love eddie but sometimes he was really up his own ass when it came to tone lol

@@tanneryordan Actually the red, white and black guitar, the yellow and black guitar and the white and black guitar are all the same guitar just different paint jobs. Eddie said so when they were recreating all three guitars to be sold by Charvel. Eddie was a tone hound and I admire and appreciate that, he would settle for nothing else. During that video the clone guitars sounded and looked so good he had to write this is the shit on the back of his original guitar as he was having a hard time to tell them apart.

reading all the comments, I'm amazed how misinformed people are about Eddie's guitars. He is exactly right on the history of Eddie's Ibanez Destroyer/Shark. Eddie also used it live on the first tour after Eruption because his strat was so out of tune and they would go right into You Really Got Me so his tech could tune his B/W strat. Eddie stopped playing the guitar after that. Women and Children First it is in the pictures but Eddie actually borrowed Chris Holmes Ibanez Destroyer to record the album. To me That guitar is probably the best sound he ever had and it wasn't his guitar. Ed also wasn't very fond of the sound of Bumble Bee and you can now find video footage of the 79 tour where Eddie is playing the Dragon/Snake guitar, which was a Charvel explorer that was hand carved.

Eddie used Schwinn bike paints to paint his guitars. The paints had suggestions of what the base layer should be on the cans. For the burgundy color he used, it suggested the silver paint under it. The burgundy was actually sort of translucent, designed to be a candy-apple style paint. This is why the burgundy looks metallic; because the silver is coming through from below

Not true. He borrowed Chris Holmes Destroyer to use on Woman and Children First album because he didn’t like the tone of the cut up Shark. But he used the Shark for the album photos. He never cut up Chris Holmes Destroyer though.
