Lexi Thompson, currently ranked 33rd globally, is among the elite seven players within the top-50 who won't be participating in the season's fourth women's Major. Thompson, continuing her recent trend of absences, will not compete in the 2024 Evian Championship.
Thompson, known for her resilience and skill, last graced the France-based championship in 2019. Unfortunately, she missed the cut for the second consecutive year and later took to Instagram to express her frustrations. The 2014 Chevron Championship victor shared, “Played well today, but one errant shot and then hit 3 iron shots straight at the pin, only to end up 40+ feet away… seriously?" Her candid remarks resonated with many fans.

Reflecting on her experience, Thompson added, “I must say, I’m quite relieved not to endure another couple of days out there. Evian, you’re lovely, but it seems we’re not a good match. So, farewell @evianchamp! #justnotforme #allgood #onward.” This initial message was soon replaced with a more reflective note: "My earlier comments were solely about my disappointment with my performance in a major tournament and the tough luck we all face in this unpredictable game of golf. There was no ill intent behind my words. Clearly, this course hasn’t been favorable for me in recent years, but many competitors are excelling, and I sincerely wish them the best this weekend.”
The 2020 championship was canceled due to the pandemic, and Thompson has not returned to the Evian Resort since. The 29-year-old had impressive showings in her early outings at the event, with a third place, a T10 result, and a runner-up finish after it became a Major in 2013. However, her performances waned in subsequent years.
Ranked 33rd globally, Thompson is among the seven top-50 golfers opting out of the event at Evian-les-Bains, with World No. 4 Ruoning Yin's absence being the most notable. Meanwhile, Nelly Korda is set to make her competitive return following a dog bite incident outside a coffee shop in Seattle, which unfortunately sidelined her from the Aramco Team Series in London this week. Charley Hull is also anticipated to participate next week despite her early withdrawal from the Aramco Team Series London due to a shoulder issue and illness.
Long before her impressive T9 finish at Sahalee and the T8 finish alongside Henderson, speculation swirled about whether a major win or a significant event victory might change Thompson’s decision about stepping away from the game. The Florida native, however, remained steadfast, expressing satisfaction with her choice and determination to give her all in every tournament.
Following the first round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, Thompson remarked, "I anticipated that question would come up. I'm just taking things one day at a time. I’ve made my announcement and I'm at peace with it. Golf is an unpredictable sport, so I prefer not to look too far into the future. Just focusing on the present and seeing where it leads me." As the week concluded, she reflected, "I'm planning to build on this experience. With a few weeks off after the Dow Championship, I’ll keep honing my skills and aim to continually improve."
