It's relative. When annual meteor showers occur here we say they are hitting The Earth, because that is our fixed point of reference, but if you were to look at it from The Sun you'd see The Earth is hitting the stream of comet debris. We say that Theia impacted The Earth, but if it had worked out that life evolved on Theia instead we'd be saying The Earth hit Theia.

@axle.student
@axle.student 21 күн бұрын
Estimates are approximately 8 billion years before the red giant sun will expand enough to engulf/consume Earth. Earth will be way too hot and uninhabitable a long time before that. So that is a reasonable estimate. It's not a long time away when you consider the geological time period of life on this rock. Unfortunately we live on a dying planet. This is why I am an advocate of humans becoming space faring as soon as possible so we have time to adapt to living in a space environment. All this stop using energy to save to planet is the wrong direction for our species. It will trap us here and send us the way of the dinosaurs :(

But how can galaxies maintain their apparent coherence, locked, by gravitational forces, when another 'system' just happens to fly by or actually intermingle. Computer models show the systems just flying apart. Why don't the forces that created and maintained the great symmetrical forms we see throughout the universe simply reestablish themselves?? Am I simply misunderstanding the sheer scale of both time and dimensions involved.

@mikemccormac9368 It appears that *Dark Matter* does quite a bit more for galaxies than just modulate the dynamics of their rotational velocities. We're only just starting to understand just how much of an effect that the mass of the *Dark Matter Halos* (surrounding most galaxies) has on gravity at the really huge scale of *Galactic Clusters* & really, really humongous scale of *Galactic Superclusters.* These tremendously vast structures *(Superclusters* being composed of about _ten thousand galaxies,_ or so) are constantly moving over time-scales of billions of years, accumulating into the astonishing *Galactic Filaments* which spread out to create the *Cosmic Web* across the entire *Visible Universe* - all under the dominion of gravity (and *Dark Energy/Cosmic Expansion,* of course). Pretty clearly demonstrating that the gravity from the cumulative mass of things like galaxies may reach out far more than you'd intuitively expect... FYI - The largest structure that has ever been identified - at an unimaginable *3 **_Gigaparsecs_* / *9.8 **_Billion_** Light Years* in length - is the *Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall!* (+) (+) - nb: The entire *Observable Universe* is a mere *93 Billion Light Years* in diameter...

The universe expansion is the space between galaxies expanding in size, not the galaxies actually physically moving apart. Galaxies can still move around regardless of the expansion of empty space, if two galaxies are moving towards each other faster than the rate of expansion of space between them, they'll get closer together. Remember, big bang is all space everywhere expanding in size, not space being thrown out from a cental point like an explosion.

Two giant spiral galaxies in close proximity can only lead to one eventual conclusion. Maybe not exactly when we originally hypothesized, but yeah, they're gonna crash or tear each other up, sooner or later. Also too, if they're moving toward one another relatively slowly, this greatly increases the likelihood of a collision.

We can't even accurately predict the weather 3 days in advance but we thought we could predict the interaction of galaxies over a scale of 5 billion years?! 😂 I take that as seriously as I do the future of the planet Earth.
@antred11

Erm, a chaotic system like a planet's weather is a hell of a lot harder to predict than the trajectory of 2 masses, provided you know their initial velocities / masses.

@@Martial-MatWhat? My brother, there is a lot more affecting small scale events, such as weather, than a gravitational influence of three bodies on each other. Are you being willfully ignorant right now?

@@KnightspaceORG "Are you being willfully ignorant right now?" 🤣 Classic Dunning Kruger. When you don't understand the comment, don't try to snark on it. That is EXACTLY the point I was making. Even with JUST THREE BODIES in local space, physicists cannot make accurate predictions, let alone the weather on our own planet, let alone the behaviour of ENTIRE Galaxies light years away. The weather has trillions of things affecting it. Galaxies orders of magnitude more. And at least with weather, we're close enough to it to measure which way the wind is blowing and what the temperature is!
@antred11

@@Martial-Mat This isn't an n-body problem. This is essentially a 2-body problem (which is trivially solvable, if you know the masses and initial velocity vectors of both galaxies). N-body problems is what you have when there are more than 2 distinict masses, and more than 2 of the involved masses are too great to be negligible.

I hated the "Milkdromeda" name anyway... Why couldn't they come up with something like Andromelatte instead? If the two galaxies miss each other we could at least have a new item on the Starbucks coffee menu.

Considering the "milk" referred to in the name "The Milky Way" came from Andromeda's breast it seems that a better name was quite obvious.

Well, Anton, I am so very pleased you brought this up. It is an enormous relief that the Milky Way and Andromeda are probably not going to crash. I've been worried sick about the that for decades, ever since some previously respected astronomers proclaimed that the two galaxies were going to intersect. As a result of your video I will be cancelling my Galactic Comprehensive and Collision insurance coverages. Believe me, the premiums have been ASTRONOMICAL! Thank you so much. An as an aside, do you know anyone who would like to purchase a high end, puncture and radiation resistant, hypersonic collision rated bounce suit in a 42 long?

I love the way you admit when you were wrong. You say that earlier videos were incorrect based on this new data but also that you don't feel sorry about being wrong; the facts just changed. That is the mantra of science - using current information to prove a theory rather than simply squeezing the data to fit a previous theory. I love you Anton!
